Book excerpt: The Holly Tree Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812-1870), also known as "Boz", was the foremost English novelist of the Victorian era, as well as a vigorous social campaigner. Considered one of the English language's greatest writers, he was acclaimed for his rich storytelling and memorable characters, and achieved massive worldwide popularity in his lifetime. The popularity of his novels and short stories has meant that not one has ever gone out of print. Dickens wrote serialised novels, the usual format for fiction at the time, and each new part of his stories was eagerly anticipated by the reading public. Among his best-known works are Sketches by Boz (1836), The Pickwick Papers (1837), Oliver Twist (1838), Nicholas Nickleby (1839), Barnaby Rudge (1841), A Christmas Carol (1843), Martin Chuzzlewit (1844), David Copperfield (1850), Bleak House (1853), Little Dorrit (1857), A Tale of Two Cities (1859), Great Expectations (1861) and Our Mutual Friend (1865).

Book excerpt: This Book is annotated (it contains a detailed biography of the author). *An active Table of Contents has been added by the publisher for a better customer experience. *This book has been checked and corrected for spelling errors. This is another one of Dickens' Christmas stories. The story takes place in an inn. A dejected lover believes his darling has been untrue with his best friend and, instead of talking to her about it, decides to run away to America. His plan is foiled by the weather and he gets snowed in at The Holly Tree Inn for Christmas. Dickens then turns this into some tales within a tale story. He retells the story of Sweeney Todd and some other suspense stories, but then comes to the heart of the matter. He tells of two even younger lovers that ran away to this inn in an attempt to get married. This little tale and the ending of the main one is enough to melt any Scrooge's heart.

Book excerpt: This Hesperus paperback edition of one of Dickens' better 'Household Words' Christmas specials has an interesting introduction & useful footnotes. As always, it's a sturdy paperback with quality paper. The anthology begins well, with a truly impressive account by Dickens' Narrator of his stagecoach journey through a snow blizzard, leading to his becoming snowbound at the isolated Holly Tree Inn.It's followed by a fine melodrama by Willie Collins. The later tales are less worthwhile, and I could do without the narrative poem entirely. The most famous story in the collection is the one about the eloping children, a piece of awful Victorian slush reflecting that era's disturbing attitude to children.....even George Eliot was guilty of sentimentalising them!More than once the subject matter of one or two of these pieces made me wonder whether Thomas Hardy had read them in his youth.

Costa’s marginal annotations, drawing on his extensive experience with Darwin’s ideas in the field, lab, and classroom.

Book excerpt: This is a 1900 reprint from The Holly-Tree Inn and Other Reprinted Pieces collection of short stories, published as the second volume of A Child's History of England and Miscellaneous Pieces. The Holly-Tree Inn was originally published in the Christmas 1855 edition of Household Words. There is some evidence that Dickens only wrote three of the sections and the framing story; the other sections are purportedly attributed as follows: ""The Ostler"", Wilkie Collins; ""The Landlord"", William Howitt; ""The Barmaid"" Adelaide Anne Procter; ""The Poor Pensioner"", Holme Lee. I have kept one secret in the course of my life. I am a bashful man. Nobody would suppose it, nobody ever does suppose it, nobody ever did suppose it, but I am naturally a bashful man. This is the secret which I have never breathed until now. I might greatly move the reader by some account of the innumerable places I have not been to, the innumerable people I have not called upon or received, the innumerable social evasions I have been guilty of, solely because I am by original constitution and character a bashful man. But I will leave the reader unmoved, and proceed with the object before me. That object is to give a plain account of my travels and discoveries in the Holly-Tree Inn; in which place of good entertainment for man and beast I was once snowed up.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long considered the essential guide to Joyce's famously difficult work, Roland McHugh's Annotations to "Finnegans Wake" provides both novice readers and seasoned Joyceans with a wealth of information in an easy-to-use format uniquely suited to this densely layered text. Each page of the Annotations corresponds directly with a page of the standard Viking/Penguin edition of Finnegans Wake and contains line-by-line notes following the placement of the passages to which they refer. The reader can thus look directly from text to notes and back again, with no need to consult separate glossaries or other listings. McHugh's richly detailed notes distill decades of scholarship, explicating foreign words, unusual English connotations and colloquial expressions, place names, historical events, song titles and quotations, parodies of other texts, and Joyce's diverse literary and popular sources. The third edition has added material reflecting fifteen years of research, including significant new insights from Joyce's compositional notebooks (the "Buffalo Notebooks"), now being edited for the first time.
