This extensive project, researched in detail, covers the story from their early 1960s formation, playing the small clubs and coffee houses in and around Manchester, right up to the current day. Second only to The Beatles in UK Chart successes at their peak, this work draws on many rare interviews with all former members of the group during their hit-making heyday. In addition, friends and acquaintances also share their thoughts and recollections as to what made this band so special. I'm Alive, Here I Go Again, Bus Stop, Look Through Any Window, Carrie Anne, On A Carousel, He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother, The Air That I Breathe, Long Cool Woman (In A Black Dress)... and many, many more are covered within the pages, along with a selection of rare photographs and posters. Why did the group's original guitarist leave, just before success came calling? Which former member went on to achieve superstardom in the U.S. after quitting the band? How did a founding member of the 1970s chart-topers 10cc play such an important role in the Hollies story? What did The Hollies get up top on a darkened Newcastle railway platform in the company of Paul McCartney's younger brother? How did a beer commercial revitalise the career of the group? Stories, history, chart facts... it's all here. Climb aboard and start Riding The Carousel!

Book excerpt: Music legend, photographer, and artist Graham Nash reflects on more than fifty years of an extraordinary life in this extensive collection of personal photographs, paintings, and mixed-media artwork. In this curated collection of art and photography from his personal archive, Graham Nash’s life as a musician and artist unfolds in vivid detail. Best known as a founding member of the Hollies and supergroup Crosby, Stills & Nash, Graham developed a love of photography from the time he was a child. Inspired by his father, Nash began taking pictures at 10 years old and would go on to take his camera with him ever since—on tour with the Hollies and later CSN and CSNY, among friends at Laurel Canyon and abroad. Many of his photographs depict intimate moments with family and friends, among them Joni Mitchell, Stephen Stills, and Neil Young. This volume presents these images alongside Nash’s own reflections, telling the story behind the pictures and giving insight into the life of one of the greatest musicians of all time.

Book excerpt: Michael Walker’s Laurel Canyon presents the inside story of the once hottest rock and roll neighborhood in LA. In the late sixties and early seventies, an impromptu collection of musicians colonized a eucalyptus-scented canyon deep in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles and melded folk, rock, and savvy American pop into a sound that conquered the world as thoroughly as the songs of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones had before them. Thirty years later, the music made in Laurel Canyon continues to pour from radios, iPods, and concert stages around the world. During the canyon's golden era, the musicians who lived and worked there scored dozens of landmark hits, from "California Dreamin'" to "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" to "It's Too Late," selling tens of millions of records and resetting the thermostat of pop culture. In Laurel Canyon, veteran journalist Michael Walker tells the inside story of this unprecedented gathering of some of the baby boomer's leading musical lights—including Joni Mitchell; Jim Morrison; Crosby, Stills, and Nash; John Mayall; the Mamas and the Papas; Carole King; the Eagles; and Frank Zappa, to name just a few—who turned Los Angeles into the music capital of the world and forever changed the way popular music is recorded, marketed, and consumed.

Book excerpt: An engaging and illuminating biography focused on the formative and highly influential early years of “rock’s first supergroup” (Rolling Stone) Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young—when they were the most successful, influential, and politically potent band in America. After making their marks in popular bands such as the Hollies and the Byrds, David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash released their first album in May 1969. By the time they arrived at Woodstock a few months later, Neil Young had joined their ranks and together, their transcendent harmonies and evocative lyrics channeled all the romantic idealism and radical angst of their time. Now, music journalist Peter Doggett chronicles these legendary musicians and the movement they came to represent at the height of their popularity and influence: 1969 to 1974. Based on interviews with the band and colleagues, along with exclusive access to CSNY’s archive, Doggett provides new insights into their incredible catalog, from their delicate acoustic confessionals like “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes” to their timeless classics such as “Our House.” Doggett also uncovers plenty of new stories and perspectives on the four tenacious and volatile songwriters’ infamously reckless, hedonistic, and often combative lifestyles that led to their continuous breakups and behaviors—extreme even by rock star standards. “A must for CSNY fans and anyone who remembers the era when it ruled the pop charts” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review), CSNY is a quintessential and definitive account of one of the biggest bands of the Woodstock generation.

Book excerpt: The Hollies are a British pop/rock group from Manchester, England, UK best known for their pioneering and distinctive 3-part vocal harmony style. They became one of the leading British groups of the '60s, having spent 231 weeks on the UK singles charts during that decade, the 9th highest of any artist, remaining popular into the mid '70s. The Hollies were founded by Allan Clarke and Graham Nash in 1962 as a Merseybeat-type band, some of their members having come from towns north of Manchester in East Lancashire. Graham Nash left during 1968 to form the supergroup Crosby, Stills & Nash. They were popular in many countries, at least 60 singles or EPs and 26 albums charting somewhere in the world, over 5 decades, although they didn't have a lot of success in the US until "Bus Stop" in 1966. The Hollies had over 30 charting singles on the UK Singles Chart, with 22 on the Billboard Hot 100, their big hits on both sides of the Atlantic having included "Just One Look", "Look Through Any Window", "I Can't Let Go", "Bus Stop", "Stop Stop Stop", "On a Carousel", "Carrie Anne", and "Jennifer Eccles", followed by "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother", "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress", and "The Air That I Breathe". They're one of the few British bands of the early '60s, along with the Rolling Stones, that have never disbanded, having continued to record and perform. The Hollies were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame during 2010.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An award-winning journalist’s dramatic account of a shooting that shook a community to its core, with important implications for the future On the last evening of summer in 2013, five shots rang out in a part of northeast Denver known as the Holly. Long a destination for African American families fleeing the Jim Crow South, the area had become an “invisible city” within a historically white metropolis. While shootings there weren’t uncommon, the identity of the shooter that night came as a shock. Terrance Roberts was a revered anti-gang activist. His attempts to bring peace to his community had won the accolades of both his neighbors and the state’s most important power brokers. Why had he just fired a gun? In The Holly, the award-winning Denver-based journalist Julian Rubinstein reconstructs the events that left a local gang member paralyzed and Roberts facing the possibility of life in prison. Much more than a crime story, The Holly is a multigenerational saga of race and politics that runs from the civil rights movement to Black Lives Matter. With a cast that includes billionaires, elected officials, cops, developers, and street kids, the book explores the porous boundaries between a city’s elites and its most disadvantaged citizens. It also probes the fraught relationships between police, confidential informants, activists, gang members, and ex–gang members as they struggle to put their pasts behind them. In The Holly, we see how well-intentioned efforts to curb violence and improve neighborhoods can go badly awry, and we track the interactions of law enforcement with gang members who conceive of themselves as defenders of a neighborhood. When Roberts goes on trial, the city’s fault lines are fully exposed. In a time of national reckoning over race, policing, and the uses and abuses of power, Rubinstein offers a dramatic and humane illumination of what’s at stake.

He drifts into the radical arts scene and far-left politics, and finally into a squalid squat in London. A return to the idyllic “The Hollies” seems a good idea, but now the house has become a commune, and Spencer is the guru. When this too, inevitably, goes sour, Stephen has to try to understand what was real and what was just a dream?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1987, New York Times bestseller, I’m With The Band has been reprinted throughout the years, all over the world. This is the stylish, exuberant and sweetly innocent tale of one of the most famous groupies of the 1960s and 70s. Beginning with Pamela Des Barres’ early obsession with Elvis, her own Beatlemania madness, and her fierce determination to meet the musicians who rocked her world, I’m With The Band illuminates the glory days of scintillating encounters with musical gods including Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Mick Jagger and Keith Moon. A girl just wanting to have fun, Des Barres immersed herself in the drugs, danger and ecstasy of the freewheeling 1960s. As a member of The GTOs (Girls Together Outrageously), an all-female group masterminded by Frank Zappa, Des Barres was in the thick of the most revolutionary renaissance in the history of modern popular music. She travelled with Led Zeppelin; lived in sin with Don Johnson; turned down a date with Elvis Presley; and was close friends with Robert Plant, Gram Parsons and Ray Davies. She had affairs with Mick Jagger, Jimmy Page, Keith Moon, Waylon Jennings, Chris Hillman, Noel Redding, and Jim Morrison, among others. A woman in possession of her own destiny, Des Barres blazed a trail for women’s life-writing, standing up for female voices and experience everywhere. From original diaries, told with great warmth, chutzpah and joie de vivre, this is a frank memoir that wears its heart on its sleeve, and recalls one of rock ’n’ roll’s most thrilling eras. This edition contains new material from the author, including her response to the vitriolic shaming of groupies, and a foreword by Roisin O’Connor, rock journalist and music correspondent for the Independent.

Book excerpt: Always the pioneer, Genya formed Goldie and the Gingerbreads in the early sixties, touring behind a string of European hits with the Stones, Kinks, Yardbirds and Hollies as the first all female rock and roll band. Later she resurfaced back in the US as the powerful voice of Ten Wheel Drive, one of the original horn jazz-fusion bands. In the Seventies she expanded her repertoire becoming the world's first independent female producer, with critically acclaimed records by Ronnie Spector and the Dead Boys, 'Young Loud and Snotty', labelled the ultimate punk album by many reviewers. During the same period Hilly Krystal summoned Genya to head up CBGB Records. In 2003 she received accolades for her memoir, Lollipop Lounge, one of the great tales of Rock and Roll survival. In it she speaks candidly about her childhood as a holocaust survivor, a teenage immigrant growing up in the tenements of New York's lower East Side, her career and survival of both addiction and lung cancer. In 2011 The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum included Goldie and the Gingerbreads in their Women in Music exhibit. In 2012 her latest CD, the autobiographical, Cheesecake Girl, was released to rave reviews. She also appears on the posthumous Joey Ramona release, 'New York City', and a portion of her story is about to hit the big screen as Castle star, Stana Katic portrays her character in the new feature film, 'CBGBs' scheduled for a 2013 release. She continues to host two monthly radio shows for Little Steven's Underground Garage on Sirius/XM: 'Chicks and Broads' in which she covers the often forgotten music of female artists from the 50's to the present, as well as showcasing new and unsigned bands in 'Goldie's Garage'.
