Book excerpt: 'Girls, I think your father's dead. I knocked his knees out. I conked his head. I shot that house clown in the neck.' In a dirt-dry town in rural Australia, a shot shatters the still night. A mother and her daughters have just welcomed home the man of the house-with a crack in the shins and a bullet in the neck. The only issue now is disposing of the body. Triggered into thrilling motion by an act of revenge, The Bleeding Tree is rude, rhythmical and irreverently funny. Imagine a murder ballad blown up for the stage, set against a deceptively deadly Aussie backdrop, with three fierce females fighting back.

Book excerpt: Greg Lynn, one of the leading figures in computer-aided architectural design, is the curator of an exhibition series initiated by the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA.) The exhibitions, which will travel to the Yale School of Architecture Gallery, are to explore the role of digital technologies in the design process since the early days. For the first exhibition “Archaeology of the Digital” Lynn selected four individuals who are the pioneers in applying the new technologies to architectural design: Peter Eisenman, Frank Gehry, Chuck Hoberman, and Shoei Yoh. The exhibition is an introduction to digital design which has progressed since then in a radical fashion. The initiative of the CCA to preserve the early stages of this ground-breaking development in architecture will also positively affect the means and the ways of collecting information by museums.
Download or read book Ned Kelly's Son written by Trevor Tucker and published by Dream Write Publishing Limited. This book was released on 2014-01 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a summer's afternoon, shadows cast by the ancient red gums of the Oxley Flats near Glenrowan unfailingly creep across the parched earth: inevitably those shadows will diffuse into night. And as each year inexorably sheds its seasons, regrettably many worthy historical events will become vague and are thus fated to be lost forever. But not always! What then are the odds that a chance meeting of like souls in 1958 would result in the resurrection of hidden accounts of a mother and her son, whose amazing lives challenge the legend of Australia's most iconic bushranger? Ned Kelly's Son is a romantic historical adventure. You will fall in love with Orla O'Meara as she travels from her home in Ireland to the land where she comes to make her home. She will influence history by leaving her greatest gift - a son - and will challenge you to think beyond present records.

Download or read book The Lighthouse written by Keith McCloskey and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 26 December 1900, the vessel Hesperus arrived at Eilean Mor in the remote Outer Hebrides with a relief lighthouseman and fresh provisions. The lighthouse had been in operation for a year, but it had been noted that no light had been seen from Eilean Mor for several days. The relief keeper, Joseph Moore, found the lighthouse to be completely deserted, and a subsequent search of the island failed to reveal any sign of what had happened to the three keepers. The last entry in the logbook had been made on 15 December and contained a number of strange and distressing clues as to the mental states of the men. One was reported to have been crying, while another had become 'very quiet'. When it was revealed that the men's oilskin coats were missing and the clock in the lighthouse had stopped, theories surrounding the keepers' fates inevitably proliferated. These included a giant wave washing them away, murder or suicide. Others favoured more esoteric explanations – Eilean Mor was believed to have mystical properties. In The Lighthouse, Keith McCloskey explores this mysterious and chilling story in depth for the first time and reveals a shocking conclusion.
Download or read book Henry Sutton written by Lorayne Branch and published by . This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have no hesitation in claiming Henry Sutton is Australia's greatest ever inventor and, indeed, one of the greatest inventors the world has ever seen. The range of his inventions is extraordinary, including in lighting, batteries, telephony and wireless telegraphy, photography, flight, microscopy, and car engines. Yet he remains shamefully unheralded. Admired and befriended by some of the great scientists and engineers of his time, such as Nikola Tesla and Alexander Graham Bell, his achievements are largely unrecognized. This Australian inventor, working in isolation in Ballarat in the decades around the turn of the 20th century, deserves a place in the pantheon of contributors to the modern technological age.

Book Synopsis Geomechanics and Geology by : J.P. Turner
Download or read book Geomechanics and Geology written by J.P. Turner and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2017-09-19 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geomechanics investigates the origin, magnitude and deformational consequences of stresses in the crust. In recent years awareness of geomechanical processes has been heightened by societal debates on fracking, human-induced seismicity, natural geohazards and safety issues with respect to petroleum exploration drilling, carbon sequestration and radioactive waste disposal. This volume explores the common ground linking geomechanics with inter alia economic and petroleum geology, structural geology, petrophysics, seismology, geotechnics, reservoir engineering and production technology. Geomechanics is a rapidly developing field that brings together a broad range of subsurface professionals seeking to use their expertise to solve current challenges in applied and fundamental geoscience. A rich diversity of case studies herein showcase applications of geomechanics to hydrocarbon exploration and field development, natural and artificial geohazards, reservoir stimulation, contemporary tectonics and subsurface fluid flow. These papers provide a representative snapshot of the exciting state of geomechanics and establish it firmly as a flourishing subdiscipline of geology that merits broadest exposure across the academic and corporate geosciences.
