To such apologies he is no friend, sensible even as he is of his own deficiencies, and of the can dour which this production of his pen will need from readers whose ability to judge of its merits is only of an ordinary er tent. If the reasons he asked why he undertook to send forth such a work, he will frankly acknowledge them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The volume is, therefore, a Jubilee Memorial, and an offering to the Methodist public. Like the Banyan tree, whose branches spread out, then incline towards, and eventually reach, the earth, where they strike root until vigorous offshoots become both a progeny and support to the parent stock, so there are innate forces in Methodism which cause it to spread out in all directions, till a cluster of Churches is formed, in time becoming selfsupporting, but yet maintaining a vital and glad connection with the parent Church. The truth of this has been verified and illustrated in this land. The plain narrative of this growth is given in this volume. The authors are not historians, but more like annalists They have not exhaustively studied the facts, interrogated the spirit, and deduced the important lessons, which Methodism in this land presents to the historian. They have compiled and put into a succinct form the facts and annals of the early Methodist story. Their plan has been, of set purpose, to be full when writing about the first and pioneer work of the Church, but to be brief and summary when relating its more recent achievements. They could not enlarge upon the recent, as they felt at liberty to do upon the earlier story. The work was too delicate, and the perspective too near for them to attempt it. They preferred sketching the more distant landscape, and have dealt with the nearer foreground in a few outlines. This may be disappointing to some, but worthy deeds and lives in recent years will be dealt with in due time, when we are considerably older, but by other hands than the writers of this volume. He has been guided by the same principles, and actuated by the same spirit, as he then announced. The friends already named as having contributed assistance to the author in the preceding volumes, have generally continued to do so in this instance and to them his renewed and most grateful thanks are respect fully presented. The author is happy now to add the names of the Rev. W. Lord, the Rev. C. Tucker, and Francis Herbert, Esq., of Chelsea, from whom he has received important documentary and other informa tion. He also feels called on specially to acknow ledge the important aid rendered by the Rev. John Kirk in compiling the Index. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Wesleyan Methodism, Vol. 2 Methodism during Wesley's Life - Necessity for Change in the System after his Death - Further Causes of Developement - These rendered more potent by the Character of the Societies - The Principle of Methodist Developement arose out of the Operation of a divine Purpose - No systematic Action taken to establish an improved Polity - The Result of this peculiar State of the Connexion. Our preceding researches have fully established the fact, that Methodism, throughout the lifetime of Wesley, mainly consisted in a series of efforts to evangelize the benighted nominal Christians of our country, and to lead them to the experience of inward godliness, and the practice of outward holiness. All that Wesley did in the way of organization, was not designed to work out any pre conceived plan, or to establish any particular system, but to save souls from the guilt and power of sin, and to train them up for heaven. This being the case, it cannot be any cause of wonder, that his death rendered very important changes necessary. As the working out of a system was not his ruling object. The facts given in this volume abundantly justify the confidence of our Church, and show that the sacrifices it has made during the last century and a quarter for the spread of the gospel are bearing fruit for which we can never cease to be grateful to God.
