Book excerpt: In The Lordship of the Isles, twelve specialists offer new insights on the rise and fall of the MacDonalds of Islay and the greatest Gaelic lordship of later medieval Scotland. Portrayed most often as either the independently-minded last great patrons of Scottish Gaelic culture or as dangerous rivals to the Stewart kings for mastery of Scotland, this collection navigates through such opposed perspectives to re-examine the politics, culture, society and connections of Highland and Hebridean Scotland from the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries. It delivers a compelling account of a land and people caught literally and figuratively between two worlds, those of the Atlantic and mainland Scotland, and of Gaelic and Anglophone culture. Contributors are David Caldwell, Sonja Cameron, Alastair Campbell, Alison Cathcart, Colin Martin, Tom McNeill, Lachlan Nicholson, Richard Oram, Michael Penman, Alasdair Ross, Geoffrey Stell and Sarah Thomas.

Excerpt: ...his eldest son, John, a youth who had been brought up under the charge of the Earl of Huntly, and made him keeper of the castle of Stornoway, in which the old chief, his grandfather, was left as a prisoner. John Macleod continued in possession of the castle and of the island for some time, until he was attacked and killed by his bastard uncle, Ruari Oig. The old man was once more liberated and restored to his estate, "which," says our authority, "he did possesse during the rest of his troublesome days." On hearing of the 1585. THE MACLEODS OF LEWIS. 221 death of his son, Torquil Connanach, by the advice of the Mackenzies, apprehended and executed, at Dingwall, his bastard brother, Donald, who was believed to have been privy to the designs of Ruari Oig. Thus was the Siol Torquil weakened by private dissensions, and exposed to fall a prey, as it did soon afterwards, to the growing power of the Mackenzies. As the Scottish Islanders still continued to exercise a considerable influence in the north of Ireland, it will be proper, before concluding the present chapter, to take a retrospective view of the events in Ulster in which they were chiefly concerned, since the death of James Macdonald and Shane O'Neill. The children of James Macdonald being young at his death, the Irish estates of the family were seized by their uncle, Sorley Buy, who, during his brother's life, had merely been manager under the latter. Sorley Buy was a man of conduct and courage, and speedily extended his influence over the adjacent territories of the Route and Claneboy--being generally successful in his enterprises, whether against the native Irish or the forces of the English government.f In September 1575, while Sir Henry Sidney, then Lord Deputy...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The settlement of the Hebrides is usually considered in terms of the state formation agenda. Yet the area was subject to successive attempts at plantation, largely overlooked in historical narrative. Aonghas MacCoinnich’s study, Plantation and Civility, explores these plantations against the background of a Lowland-Highland cultural divide and competition over resources. The Macleod of Lewis clan, ‘uncivil’, Gaelic Highlanders, were dispossessed by the Lowland, ‘civil,’ Fife Adventurers, 1598-1609. Despite the collapse of this Lowland Plantation, however, the recourse to the Mackenzie clan, often thought a failure of policy, was instead a pragmatic response to an intractable problem. The Mackenzies also pursued the civility agenda treating with Dutch partners and fending off their English rivals in order to develop their plantation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this re-issue of a continuing classic, Donald Gregory explores the turbulent and compelling past of Scotland's Highlands and islands in the medieval era, concentrating on the years between 1493 and 1625. This is the original history of the lands of the former Lords of the Isles, charting their struggle to regain stability after the years of Somerled and his followers. Gregory offers the definitive account of the area's progress, taking the reader from the successful and popular reign of James IV to the distinctly more dangerous years of Charles I, and charting the immense amount of change that occurred during this time. Initially published in 1881, The History of the Western Highlands and Isles of Scotland, 1493 - 1625 is an invaluable and classic piece of scholarship on an era of Scottish history which is often neglected.

After surveying the land and finding it a stark contrast to the fertile fields of South Carolina's lowcountry, he understood why, after generations, his forbears had chosen to leave the Scottish isle and cross the Atlantic. However, over the next two decades he made annual visits to Scotland and slowly uncovered the rich history of the MacQueen and Macfarlane families.
