Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Town and Township of Barnsley, in Yorkshire, From an Early Period AN eminent writer* on parochial antiquities, in Preface. Alluding to these studies, says, I am sensible there be some Who despise this kind of learning, and represent it as dry, barren, and monkish. I leave such to their dear enjoyments of ignorance and ease, but I dare assure any Wise and sober man, that historical antiquities, and especially a search into the notices of our own nation, do deserve and will reward the pains of any Eng lish student; Will make him understand the state of former ages, the constitution of governments, the fundamental reasons of equity and law, the rise and succession of doctrines and opinions, the original of ancient and the composition of modern tongues, the tenures of property, the maxims of 'policy, the rites of religion, the cha racters of Virtue and Vice, and indeed the nature of mankind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Annals of Yorkshire, From the Earliest Period to 1852 Agreeably to previous announcement, the first volume contains a record of the most interesting events connected with the County of which it professes to treat, chronologically arranged, from a remote period to the present time, compiled from authentic sources. Following in the order of date, is also given incidental notices of eminent men, whose public services and attainments deservedly endear their memories to posterity; reserving the fuller account, in somewhat of a biographical shape, for the close of the second volume. The several minerals, organic remains, together with the successive discoveries of the various relics of past ages; cannot fdl to be interesting to the antiquarian and geologist; nor will the progress of intelligence and civilization, as exhibited from the timm of the Norman Conquest to the establishment of free and responsible government afford less abundant material for reflection in the study of history. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Yorkshire in Olden Times At the earliest period of which we have any record in ancient history, what is now the County of York was occupied by a tribe of British Celts, Whom Tacitus calls Brig' antes, a Cymric name which appears to have been derived from the Gaelic braz'glze, high land. They were not confined to Yorkshire, however, but inhabited all the north of Eng land, from sea to sea, and from the Humber to the Tweed. Traces of their occupation of the county have been found in recent times, all over the Wolds, in excavations and graves, from which rude pottery and their flint weapons and implements have frequently been exhumed. Nothing is known of the history of this primitive race of Yorkshire men prior to the time, nearly a century after the southern and central portions of England had been subdued by the Romans, when the imperial legions marched in, under Ostorious Scapula, under the pretext of repressing internal disorder. The Brigantes were not2 yorkshire IN olden times. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Picturesque History of Yorkshire, Vol. 1 of 3: Being an Account of the History I may be permitted, perhaps, to make one or two remarks upon York Shire and its people as they present themselves to the man who tries to write about them. It is now twenty-one years since the elementary notion of writing this book occurred to me, and during that time I have been continually observing places and people in more or less desultory fashion. Now that the task is over, the chief impression remaining in my mind with respect to Yorkshire is that it is absolutely impossible for any of us, no matter how fond we may be of it as our native county, to comprehend its vast size. Folk who live outside its borders cannot form any conception of its enormous area, of the difference between its three Ridings, of the alternations in scenery, of the gulf which separates its men of the towns and cities from its men of the lonely dales and silent woodlands. There is, I think, no other county in England in which one can find such vast differences as in this. There is certainly none in which one can do so much travelling. If any one who doubts this will take up a map of York shire and consider what lies beween Bawtry and Pierce Bridge, between Mickle Fell and Spurn Head, between Todmorden and Teesmouth, between Flamborough Head and Bowland Forest, his doubts will be shaken if not absolutely dispelled. But, after all, it is only the man who has travelled over the greater part of the county who can comprehend its Size and recognise its varied attractions. There are plenty of people who have a notion that Yorkshire is a wilderness of coal-mines, manufactories, and so on, and who doubt its possession of anything in the shape of picturesque ness. In point of fact, it deserves to rank amongst the most picturesque counties of England and Wales, and it is hard to say if any other county actually exceeds it in beauty. If it lacks anything it is colour in all other respects it can claim equal rights with Devon or Westmoreland, with Surrey or Warwickshire. Book excerpt: This, the fifth volume in the Aspects of Barnsley series is a remarkable achievement for a town and district having 'little history'. as Barnsley has been described. In this volume there are fifteen contributions and their nature has changed somewhat from that of its predecessors. In Aspects of Barnsley 5, there are a greater number of contributions which fall within the category of living memories and as such are more autobiographical in nature. In this volume, we travel from the Town Hall in wartime, to a history of the tramways of Barnsley. Then we read the early life of the Barnsley Cheese Factory, hotly pursued by memories of the Theatre Royal and rounding off with the disclosure of scandalous behaviour in Royston and the fate of the perpetrators before the 'Bawdy Courts'. KEY SELLING POINTS: l An updated version of a good selling formula l Excellent press and median coverage for the launch l The 'right' price range for the Christmas market EDITOR DETAILS: Brian Elliott is the series editor for the Aspects, Discovering Local History series which now includes some twenty titles either in print or due for early publication. In 1991, Brian was awarded a Master of Philosophy degree by the University of Sheffield for his research into Barnsley and its surrounding areas. His knowledge and enthusiasm for local and family history has encouraged contributors from a wide variety of backgrounds to contribute to the Aspects Series, which has made this unique and highly accessible range of books to be so successful.
