Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Telephone and Telephone Exchanges: Their Invention and Development In the following pages the attempt has been made so to relate the inventions and developments in the telephone field that the record may constitute in effect a short history of the telephone industry. The original intention was to write a history, but I was advised on authority which in the book world is entitled to respect not to exceed the limits of a single volume. As that advice has been followed it is considered that the word 'history' as a title should be held in reserve for the use of the author or authors who may produce the comprehensive treatise which the subject deserves. The original intention has, however, been followed in an abbreviated form. The principal inventions have been selected. The circumstances leading up to them, the developments resulting from them, and the influences bearing on them, have been considered with all the detail that space permits. But telephone exchange service is not merely a matter of plant and invention. Technical, commercial, and political threads compose the fabric, and they are interwoven in the record. The recital of the prior causes has served in most cases to make clear the technical features. In recounting the progress of Bell's invention reference is frequently made to the evidence given by him in various suits, noted for the sake of brevity as 'Deposition.' The full title is 'The Bell Telephone: The Deposition of Alexander Graham Bell in the suit brought by the United States to annul the Bell patents.' The suit was abandoned, but the deposition (in which is included evidence taken in other suits) was printed in 1908 by the American Bell Telephone Co. 'because of its historical value and scientific interest.' This book of 469 pages, though not published in the ordinary sense, is available for reference in most technical libraries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Telephone The task which we have set ourselves in the present book of giving a detailed and reliable account of the present state of Telephony has been no easy one; since it was a question how, on the one hand, to describe a number of installations and apparatus which had not yet found their way into publicity, and oh the other hand, to select from many proposed systems and arrangements those only which had been found practically useful. The name is specially applicable to the instrument just invented by Dr. Bell, by means of which the voice is repeated at the distance of hundreds of miles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dumb No Longer: Romance of the Telephone The interesting facts that the writer found form a story so fascinating that it is a source of regret that some gifted writer has not framed it in the language it merits, and brought out more fully the interesting details. For they reveal how the earnest efforts of three women paved the way for - and made possible - the consummation of the cherished hopes of the in ventor and led to the perfecting of that masterly conception of the theory of the transmission of speech electrically, many years earlier than it otherwise would have been. And to all who aided in bringing about the invention of the electric-speaking tele phone at a period when the leaders in physical, electrical, and mechanical sciences either failed to grasp the magnitude of the conception, or believed that while theoretically it was sublime, in practice it would prove of little value, the world will ever owe a debt of gratitude that will multiply as the years roll on. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of the Telephone in Europe F all modern inventions there is none that has so greatly facilitated rapid inter-communication as the telephone. The writing of a letter takes time, and the conveyance of the letter to its destination takes much longer time. The telegraph is instantaneous so far as the conveyance of the electric Signal between point and point is concerned, but it can only be used by expert operators, and the original message must be written at the dispatching end and transcribed afresh at the receiving end. The telephone, on the contrary, is instantaneous between individual and individual. The expert operator is only required to effect the communica tion between the two individuals wishing to speak to one another. The moment that has been done they can talk together almost as easily as if they were in the same room. There is no other means of communication which confers advantages even approaching those given by the telephone. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bell's Electric Speaking Telephone: Its Invention, Construction, Application, Modification and History When Franklin drew from the clouds the electric spark upon the cord of his kite, it seemed obvious that electricity might be made use of for the purpose of telegraphy; and more than one hundred years ago Lesage established a telegraph in Geneva by the use of frictional electricity. But this force had very little power when transmitted over a long distance, and that little was practically uncontrollable, and therefore useless for telegraphy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Discussion of Telephone Competition Mr. Ainsworth's letter is largely a recital of telephone history, as relates to the inadequacy and imperfect service before competition, the springing up of competition in response to the public demands, the results thereof in improvement of service, lowering of rates, extension of exchange lines, extensions to rural districts, extension of toll lines, establishment of ex changes in small towns, the improvements in equipment, etc. Some of these items are illustrated by reference to the Columbus plant. The illustrations could be readily multiplied by any one who has observed telephone conditions in Ohio and other states. After all, this tremendous spontaneous growth is its own justification.
