Excerpt: ... thers, and all the chief Officers, alighted and ialuted the Bajjhaw; and the Bajhaw presented them to Mr. Ruffel, and aster mutual Salutations from all who knew one another, we set forward in great Pomp; the Bajhaw, his Brothers, Mr. Rujsel, and the Englijjh in the Front: all the way we marched, small Parties of Horsemen clapped Spurs to their Horses, and rode out, and then returned full speed up to our Front levelled their Pieces, and fired at us. We had seen so much of this, we were heartily tired with it, but obliged to fee it: Sometimes the young Horses, not Ib manageable as the rest, would run full speed into our Party, and drive all before them; this was counted a great Disgrace to the Rider, if he could not stop his Horse in time: and I saw but few Examples of it. However, this Day the Bajhaw's youngest Brother, who was upon a fine young fiery Horse, and not stopping him as soon as he recovered his Arms, his Horse ran directly against Admiral Terez, who was in the Front Rank, and knock'd him ofF his Mule, and we all expected he had kilPd the old Man; but he got up of himself, and mounted his Mule with little Concern or Damage; which, for a Man upwards of 60, is pretty much: yet 60 is reckoned no Age in Barbary to those who live temperate, as Terez does; and we ob served he could undergo much more Fatigue than any one among us. W E marched in this manner, firing and rejoicing, close by the City of Old Fez; which did not offer to disturb us, by reason some Hours before our Arrival, the King's Brother, and great Favourite, Muley Amsteady, and the Grand Mufti of Mequinez, were arrived from Mequinez with Proposals and Offers of Peace from the Emperor; so that a Cessation was made until these Proposals were received and considered on by...

Book excerpt: In his book on constitutional revolutions in the Ottoman Empire and Iran in the early twentieth century, Nader Sohrabi considers the global diffusion of institutions and ideas, their regional and local reworking and the long-term consequences of adaptations. He delves into historic reasons for greater resilience of democratic institutions in Turkey as compared to Iran. Arguing that revolutions are time-bound phenomena whose forms follow global models in vogue at particular historical junctures, he challenges the ahistoric and purely local understanding of them. Furthermore, he argues that macro-structural preconditions alone cannot explain the occurrence of revolutions, but global waves, contingent events and the intervention of agency work together to bring them about in competition with other possible outcomes. To establish these points, the book draws on a wide array of archival and primary sources that afford a minute look at revolutions' unfolding.

Book excerpt: The main aim of this volume is to explore the continuity of Portuguese-Moroccan relations before and, especially, after the classic period of the 11th-16th centuries. Its title, “Entangled peripheries”, is a conceptual attempt to account for the contradiction between the resilience of bilateral contacts and exchanges and its decreasing relevance for both sides of the Strait of Gibraltar. Although most chapters focus on topics of the 18th-20th centuries, the contributions dealing with the medieval and early modern periods provide a long durée perspective typical of “entangled history”. Other distinctive elements of this historiographical current are also present, such as the circulations and networks of people and objects and the supranational and regional actors and processes, which help situate Portugal and Morocco as “peripheries”. The volume is divided in three sections: “Marginal circulations”, “Facts, histories, fictions” and “Beyond nationalism and colonialism”. The first one presents case-studies of displacements of ethnically or socially marginal groups between Morocco and Portugal between the 15th and the 20th centuries. The last section’s examines how regional, imperial and global processes far outweighed bilateral relations across the Strait of Gibraltar both before and after the classic period of the 11th-16th centuries. Finally, the middle section of this volume engages with the “entangled peripheries” approach not literally as the other two but in a meta-sense, by focusing on historical sources, historiography and historical fiction.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a much-needed corrective to dominant approaches to understanding political causality during episodes of intense social mobilisation, specifically with a North African context.Drawing on analyses of routine governance and of "revolutionary" mobilisation in four countries of the Maghreb - Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya - before, during and after the 2011 uprisings, Volpi explains the different trajectories of these uprisings by showing how specific acts of protestcreated new arenas of contention that provided actors with new rationales, practices and, ultimately, identities. The book illustrates how the dynamics of revolutionary episodes are characterised by the social and political de-institutionalisation of routine mechanisms of (authoritarian) governance. It also details how post-uprising re-institutionalisation and/or conflict are shaped by reconstructedunderstandings of the uprisings by actors, who are themselves partially the products of these episodes of phenomena.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this penetrating biography of Thomas Bradbury Chandler, S. Scott Rohrer takes readers deep into the intellectual world of a leading loyalist who defended monarchy, rejected rebellion and democracy, and opposed the American Revolution. Talented, hardworking, and erudite, this Anglican minister from New Jersey possessed one of the Church of England’s most outstanding minds. Chandler was an Anglican leader in the 1760s and a key strategist in the effort to strengthen the American church in the years preceding the Revolution. He headed the campaign to create an Anglican bishopric in America—a cause that helped inflame tensions with American radicals unhappy with British policies. And, in the 1770s, his writings provided some of the most trenchant criticisms of the American revolutionary movement, raising fundamental questions about obedience, subordination, and rebellion that undercut Whig assertions about republicanism and popular control. Working from Chandler’s library catalog and other primary sources, Rohrer digs into Chandler’s political and religious beliefs, exploring their origins and the events in British history that shaped them. An intriguing and thoughtful reappraisal of a consequential figure in early American history, this biography will captivate students, scholars, and lay readers interested in politics and religion in Revolutionary-era America.
