The happy influence which the Fathers had acquired over the Indians, seems to have been used with such complete and unremitting devotion to their welfare, that over their native prairies, they had learned to tend large herds and flocks; while they looked with wonder upon unwonted scenes of wild peace and quiet, of the real nature and cause of which, they could have had no just appreciation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Battle of Buena Vista, the Operations Army of Occupation, for One Month IT is due to those who are immediately interested in the accuracy of the following account, as well as to the historian who may hereafter consult it, to state what were the opportunities of the writer for knowing the truth. For two months before the battle of Eu ena Vista, he was stationed at or near the ground on which it was fought; and, dur ing this time, he was led, with others, to remark its strength as a military position. In the battle itself, the nature of the service he was called on to perform as com mander of a company of dragoons, afforded opportunities of deliberate observation in many different parts of the scene, and eu abled him sometimes to take notes of what was going on around him. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Military occupation is a recurrent feature of modern international politics and yet has received little attention from political scientists. This book sets out to remedy this neglect, offering:* an account of military occupation as a form of government* an assessment of key trends in the development of military occupations over the last two centuries* an explanation the conceptual and practical difficulties encountered by occupiers* examples drawn from, amongst others, the First and Second World Wars, US occupations in Latin America and Japan, the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, and the current occupation of IraqAfter a survey of the evolving practice and meaning of military occupation the book deals with its contested definitions, challenging restrictive approaches that disguise the true extent of the incidence of military occupation. Subsequent chapters explain the diverse forms that military government within occupation regimes take on and the role of civilian governors and agencies within occupation regimes; the significance of military occupation for our understanding of political obligation; the concept of sovereignty; the nature and meaning of justice; and our evaluation of regime transformation under conditions of military occupation.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Views and Opinions of Brigadier-General John Jacob "'I hare sometimes thought it a great pity that every one seems ashamed of publishing to the world that a certain able man it alive and still usable. But no sooner is the able man disabled by death, than any number of Biographers will abuse the poor world for letting him slip through their fingers.' "'Well, well, neighbour, I am thinking it would require some pluck to print thy virtues and sign my name. Yet, peradventure, and we were both honest, a man might dare even this.'" - Old Novel. "Here is an earnest, truth-speaking man; no theorizer, sentimentalizer, but a practical man of work and endeavour, man of sufferance and endurance. The thing that be speaks is not a hearsay, but a thing that he has himself known, and by experience become assured of. His grand excellency is this, that he is genuine. As his primary faculty, the foundation of all others, is Intellect, depth and force of Vision; so his primary virtue is Justice, the Courage to be just. He lives, as he counsels and commands, not commodiously in the Reputable, the Plausible, the Half, but resolutely in the Whole, the Good, the True." - Thomas Carlyle. A second phase commenced which lasted until 1871—not Reconstruction but genuine belligerency whose mission was to crush slavery and create civil and political rights for freed people. But as Gregory Downs shows, military occupation posed its own dilemmas, including near-anarchy.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from From West to East, Notes by the Way Earl of Leitrim, who accompanied us, permission to visit these interesting places, but provided for our transport throughout, and enjoined on the naval and military authorities at all the places we visited (all of which are still with - in the sphere of military occupation) to exert themselves in showing us all the hospitality in their power, which they did. Thus if, in the words of Maxi milian I, I had doubts at the start upon most things which he mentions, at least I no longer wonder at being rejoiced to have completed a journey which necessarily suggests so many thoughts and considerations of import on the spot as well as on the way and I am induced to offer some of these to the public, in the hope that, while contributing ever so slightly to their interest in the sons and daughters of the land of the Rising Sun, I may also give myself the pleasure of renewing a delightful excursion in the, however inadequate, effort to describe it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War Book of E Company, 364th Infantry With men in barracks it became necessary to have cooks and fatigue details. The men were assembled in the mess hall in order that something might be learned of their occupations and abilities. It was known that George Z. Duke was a cook, but more than one was needed. On being asked whether or not any of them could cook, all but Duke remained silent. When the men were asked whether or not any of them had previous military experience, five admitted previous service. Of these Lawrence S. Johnston was assigned to duty as acting mess ser geant, to which grade he was afterward warranted, and Arthur Gusler was detailed to assist Cook Duke. The remainder of the men were assigned to various fatigue duties. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. To arrive in France, the 9oth Di vision stands tenth in amount of artillery captured, thirteenth in number of machine guns captured, and fourteenth in both prisoners captured and total ad vance against the enemy. It was picked as one of the nine combatant divisions in the original Army of Occupation in Germany along with the most veteran organizations of the Expeditionary Forces. It did not fall to the lot of the goth Division to play a spectacular part in the war. It cannot boast that it was the first to carry the Stars and Stripes to the Western front. Fate did not decree that the Division should have a part in stopping the German rush for Paris. The reputation of a division is largely a matter of length of battle experience, coupled with Opportunity. The missions assigned to the 90th Division were difficult, prosaic ones, and the Division can be paid the highest military tribute - that it fulfilled every task which it was called upon to perform. Every objective was taken; not an inch of territory was yielded to the enemy; not a man straggled from his organization.
