Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Mansion House Hen it was decided in 1728 to build the Mansion House a Committee was formed and it was known as the Mansion House Committee, the name was altered to the General Purposes Committee in I789, and that Committee is still entrusted with all matters arising in connection with the building, but in addition it has, as its name implies, other duties. For many years I had considered the idea of writing a history of the building and had collected material, and when the War broke out, the customary holiday in France or Italy became impossible, and I had time to devote to research work in London, Oxford and elsewhere. In 191 6 the Chairman of the General Purposes Committee kindly mentioned my work to his Committee, which resolved that permission be sought for him to search the records in Guildhall, and also have permission to search the records at the Mansion House at any time convenient to the Lord Mayor. Consequently I had exceptional facilities for carrying on my researches. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Dublin's Mansion House is the only mayoral residence in Ireland and is older than any such surviving residence in Great Britain. Originally the town house of merchant and property developer Joshua Dawson, Mansion House was purchased by the Dublin City Assembly in April 1715 and since then has been the home of each lord mayor during their term of office. This book is the first major work on the Mansion House and includes essays on its history, architecture, and antique furnishings, along with an account of one year in the residence, which gives a vivid picture of how the building is used. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed by Atlanta architect A. Thomas Bradbury and opened in 1968, the mansion has been home to eight first families and houses a distinguished collection of American art and antiques. Often called “the people’s house,” the mansion is always on display, always serving the public. Memories of the Mansion tells the story of the Georgia Governor’s Mansion—what preceded it and how it came to be as well as the stories of the people who have lived and worked here since its opening in 1968. The authors worked closely with the former first families (Maddox, Carter, Busbee, Harris, Miller, Barnes, Perdue, and Deal) to capture behind-the-scenes anecdotes of what life was like in the state’s most public house. This richly illustrated book not only documents this extraordinary place and the people who have lived and worked here, but it will also help ensure the preservation of this historic resource so that it may continue to serve the state and its people.

Book excerpt: A tribute to the unique, historic home and New York City treasure--a classic volume first published in 2005 is here revised and updated for today, with a new foreword by Mayor Bill de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray. In this handsomely illustrated paean to New York City's mayoral residence, author Ellen Stern charts the history of Gracie Mansion from its construction as Archibald Gracie's country home in 1799, to its importance as the home of New York City's mayors and their families, to its splendid restoration in 2002, to its new role today as a center of diversity and openness--the people's house. Blending the mansion's architectural and decorative progress with anecdotal portraits of the mayoral families, exclusive interviews with many of those who have lived and worked here, and over 200 paintings and watercolors, letters and maps, invitations and elevations, designers sketches, and before and after photos, this beautiful volume, written with the cooperation of the Gracie Mansion Conservancy, is the definitive account of a beloved New York landmark that is more popular today than ever before.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcoming its first executive in 1842, the Mississippi Governor’s Mansion is the second-oldest continuously occupied governor’s residence in the United States. The Mansion is both a public building open for tours and the private residence of the governor and his family. In this unique book, readers are invited to explore the entirety of the building, from the attic to the garage and everything in between. The Mississippi Governor’s Mansion: Memories of the People’s Home is the first book of its kind dedicated to images and stories about the Governor’s Mansion. The volume reveals Governor Phil Bryant’s profound respect for the office he holds and his deep appreciation for the National Historic Landmark in which he resides. Through his personal, often touching reflections, Governor Bryant pays tribute to former governors, their families, and the many public servants who have dedicated their lives to taking care of this beautiful Greek Revival masterpiece. More than sixty elegant watercolor paintings by noted Mississippi artist Bill Wilson accompany the governor’s stories. Wilson captures the beauty and majesty of the home, its furnishings, and the restored historic grounds. The volume also features a personal foreword by First Lady Deborah Bryant inviting readers into her home, an artist’s statement by Wilson, and a brief historical essay written by Mansion curator Megan Bankston.

Book excerpt: "A book about modernist architect Mies van der Rohe's only design for the UK, a bronze tower and grand plaza in the heart of London. After decades of struggle, Mies' plans for Mansion House Square were scuppered. In Thatcher's Britain, popular opinion turned against modernism, Prince Charles criticised the work, and the government feared new public spaces. Stopped dead by an Inquiry, and mired in controversy, Mies' masterpiece was all but erased"--Publisher's website.

Philadelphia's grand mansions and architectural treasures reflect its iconic status in American history, for each Greek Revival home and Corinthian column tells a compelling story of the people behind it. Historic Strawberry Mansion in North Philadelphia was home to Judge William Lewis, a Patriot who defended colonists accused of treason and was Aaron Burr's defense lawyer. Socialite, millionaire and world-renowned art collector Henry McIlhenny made his home at Rittenhouse Square and left his art collection to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Famed architect Addison Mizner's Spanish Colonial Revival house La Ronda brought the stark contrast of South Florida to Philadelphia.
