And the more we accustom ourselves to re gard the ancients as persons of like passions as our selves, and familiarize ourselves with the idea of them as fathers, husbands, friends, and gentlemen, the better we shall understand them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Life of Marcus Tullius Cicero In the following history therefore, if I have happened to afl'irm anything that contradicts the common opinion and shocks the prejudices of the reader, I must desire him to attend diligently to the authorities on which it is grounded and if these do not give satisfaction, to suspend his judgment still to the end of the work, in the progress of which many facts will be cleared up that may appear at first perhaps uncertain and precarious: and in everything especially that relates to Cicero, I would recommend to him to contemplate the whole character, before he thinks himself qualified to judge of its separate parts, on which the whole will always be found the surest comment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Marcus Tullius Cicero, Vol. 2 of 3 Both those speeches are still extant, and a pas sage 01 'two from each will illustrate the temper and disposition m which he returned. In speaking to the senate, after a particular recital of the ser vices of his friends, he adds: as I have a pleasure in enumerating these, so I willingly pass over in silence what others wickedly acted against me; it is not my present business to remember inju ries; which, if it were in my power to revenge, I should choose to forget; my life shall be ap plied to other puposes to repay the good of fices of those who have deserved it of me to hold fast the friendships which have been tr1ed as it were in the fire; to wage war with declared ene mies to pardon my timorous, nor yet expose my treacherous friends; and to balance the misery of exile by the dignity of my return. To the people he observes; that there were four sorts of enemies, who concurred to oppress him: the first, who, out of hatred to the republiek, were mortal enemies to him for having Saved it: the second, who, under a false pretence of friendship, infamously betrayed him: the third, who, through their inability to obtain what he had acquired, were envious of his dignity: the fourth, who though by office they ought to have been the guardians of the' republick, bartered away his safety, the peace of the city, and the dignity of the empire, which were committed to their trust. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Marcus Tullius Cicero More than a century has elapsed since Middleton first published his "History of the Life of Marcus Tullius Cicero," which has during that period exclusively occupied the field in this country as the Biography of Cicero. It occurred to me that the time had come when another Life might be acceptable to the public. The advanced state of scholarship, which has made the history and literature of Rome so much better understood than when Middleton wrote, - to say nothing of his defects as a biographer, - justifies the appearance of a new account of the great Roman. The faults of his work are not inconsiderable. It is disfigured by a blind and indiscriminating tone of panegyric which is the language of flattery rather than of truth. It is almost entirely occupied with Cicero as a politician and an orator, and does not sufficiently enter into the details of his private and domestic life, which, in my opinion, form the chief charm of a biography. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Letters of Marcus Tullius Cicero to Several of His Friends, Vol. 1 of 3 These Letters are placed according to their supposed dates: The reader will find at the end of each of these volumes an index referring to the order in which they stand in the common editions. The title of Imperator, during the times of the republic, did not bear the least relation to that idea which is affixed to it in modern language; but was merely honorary and occasional. It was conferred on the Roman generals by the acclamations of their army in the field, after some signal advantage gained by their courage and conduct; and it was immediately dropped again as soon as they entered into Rome. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Letters of Marcus Tullius Cicero to Several of His Friends, Vol. 1 of 3: With Remarks by William Melmoth, Esq. Pompey was at this time carrying on the war in Afia againl't Mithridates, king of Pontus and the letter to which Cicero alludes, probably brought an account of the progrefs of the campaign. Mithridates was a cruel but brave prince, who had given employment to the Roman arms for more than forty years. Pompey, however, had the good for tune to complete what Sylla and Lucullus, his predecefl'ors in this command, were obliged to leave unfinilhed: and he not only defeated Mithridates, but annexed to the Roman dominions all that part of Alia which is between the Red, the Cafpian, and the Arabian feas. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Marcus Tullius Cicero The Life of Cicero, by Dr. Conyers Middleton, has long enjoyed an extensive and well-merited circulation. To the classical scholar, affording, as it does, a continued commentary upon the text, in the shape of copious notes, carefully transcribed from the works of the Orator, in addition to treating upon the minutest particulars of his history then known, and containing a mass of information derived from almost every available source with respect to the leading events of his time, it must always prove a valuable aid towards a thorough acquaintance with one of the most interesting periods. Other and no less obvious merits, notwithstanding the slight drawback presented in its decided and extravagant partiality, might easily be specified. With all its excellences, however, it is a work more suited, from its elaborate character, to the learned than either to the general reader, or to the student who may be desirous of making himself acquainted with the leading events in the Life of Cicero, without possessing leisure or curiosity sufficient to enter into the more extensive field of inquiry presented by the labours of Middleton.
