This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The book 'Academics of Jewish heritage in the modern history of the Jagiellonian University' is a collective work, anniversary commemorative publication connected with the 650th anniversary of the foundation of the Cracow Academy in 1364. The anniversary celebrations that fall in 2014 coincide with the celebration of 25 years of the Polish Republic which was reborn in 1989. Poland in the course of this period has changed dramatically and irreversibly: political and administrative changes, coupled with social and economic ones have occurred and which tie Poland to Europe and the free world. The Jagiellonian University is an active participant and partner in this academic, civilizational development. The 650th anniversary of the founding of the Jagiellonian University is an excellent opportunity to present and recall those academics of Jewish origin who were closely associated with the history of the university, with Cracow and with Poland, and who played a huge role in Polish science and culture. The present book is also a commemoration of those academics of Jewish origin who, together with their families, were persecuted and murdered during the Holocaust." --

Download or read book Remembering the Jagiellonians written by Natalia Nowakowska and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-10 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remembering the Jagiellonians is the first study of international memories of the Jagiellonians (1386–1596), one of the most powerful but lesser known royal dynasties of Renaissance Europe. It explores how the Jagiellonian dynasty has been remembered since the early modern period and assesses its role in the development of competing modern national identities across Central, Eastern and Northern Europe. Offering a wide-ranging panoramic analysis of Jagiellonian memory over five hundred years, this book includes coverage of numerous present-day European countries, ranging from Bavaria to Kiev, and from Stockholm to the Adriatic. In doing so, it allows for a large, multi-way comparison of how one shared phenomenon has been, and still is, remembered in over a dozen neighbouring countries. Specialists in the history of Europe are brought together to apply the latest questions from memory theory and to combine them with debates from social science, medieval and early modern European history to engage in an international and interdisciplinary exploration into the relationship between memory and dynasty through time. The first book to present the Jagiellonians' supranational history in English, Remembering the Jagiellonians opens key discussions about the regional memory of Europe and considers the ongoing role of the Jagiellonians in modern-day culture and politics. It is essential reading for students of early modern and late medieval Europe, ninteenth-century nationalism and the history of memory.

Book Synopsis Justiniana Prima by : Stanislaw Turlej
Download or read book Justiniana Prima written by Stanislaw Turlej and published by Wydawnictwo UJ. This book was released on 2016-11-21 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book explores the history of Justiniana Prima, a city built by Emperor Justinian I (527-565) in his birthplace near Ni in present-day Serbia. Previous studies focused on determining the city's location, underestimating the significance of analyzing written sources for the reconstruction of this city's genesis and importance. Using information from Emperor Justinian's Novels XI and CXXXI, as well as Book IV of Procopius of Caesarea's De aedificiis, Stanislaw Turlej endeavors to show that Justiniana Prima's historic significance resulted from granting its Church the status of an archbishopric with its own province in 535, which was independent of Rome. Justinian wanted to introduce profound changes to the ecclesiastical organization based on state law.

Book Synopsis The Hasmoneans and Their State by : Edward Dąbrowa
Download or read book The Hasmoneans and Their State written by Edward Dąbrowa and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the Hasmoneans has long caused disputes among scholars, who are far from agreement about the chronology of events, their importance, and the identities of all their actors. There are no indications that such doubts will be resolved anytime soon. The aim of this study, therefore, is not to present a new reconstruction of Hasmonean history, but to describe the institutions of the state they created. This issue usually remains on the fringe of scholarly dispute and has not been closely investigated so far. Nor has an attempt been made at a synthetic presentation of how the Hasmonean state functioned in all its aspects. For this reason, it could not be explored to the full extent possible.
