Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the House and Race of Douglas and Angus The next point we propound to speak of, is their nobility. There is great contest among men who should be most noble; but where will true nobility be found so entire? 'in what sub jett's race is it so full and perfect, according to all the accep tations and significations thereof? They define it to be a lift ia g or raising up above the vulgar: and what name, I pray. Hath been so elevated, and bath so transcended all other, as this of the Douglases.' They add this condition, that it be for true worth; and bath there been any so worthy? Those that will distinguish it into several kinds, make five sorts of it; 1. Nobility of virtue; 2. Of degrees; 8. Of ofiices and employment; 4. Of birth and descent; 5. And lastly, of fame and renown. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis A Cultural History of Race in the Reformation and Enlightenment by : Nicholas Hudson

This book was released on 2023-06-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period between the 16th and 18th centuries witnessed the expansion of European travel, trade and colonization around the globe, resulting in greatly increased contact between Westerners and peoples throughout the rest of the world. With the rise of print and the commercial book market, Europeans avidly consumed reports of the outside world and its various peoples, often in distorted or fictional forms. With the consolidation of new empirical science and taxonomy, prejudice against peoples of different colours and cultures during the 16th and 17th centuries became more systematic, giving rise to the doctrines of race 'science.' Although humanitarianism and the idea of human rights also flourished, inspiring the campaign to abolish the slave trade, this movement did not hinder imperialist expansion and the belief that humans could be ranked in a hierarchy that authorized White domination. The essays in this volume trace the complex pattern of intellectual and cultural change from popular bigotry in the Age of Shakespeare to the racial categories developed in the works of Buffon and Kant. These essays also link changes in racial thinking to other trends during this age. The development of modern ideas of race corresponded with emerging conceptions of the nation state; new acceptance of religious diversity became linked with speculations on racial diversity; transforming ideologies of gender and sexuality overlapped in crucial ways with developing racial attitudes. In many ways, the period between the Reformation and Enlightenment laid the foundations for modern racial thinking, generating issues and conflicts that still haunt us today.
Download or read book James V written by Jamie Cameron and published by Birlinn Ltd. This book was released on 2011-08-15 with total page 613 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James V suffered the fate of many a son of a famous father in being somewhat overshadowed not only by his father James IV but also by his internationally renowned daughter Mary Queen of Scots. But no-one would deny the importance of his reign, embracing as it did the establishment of the Court of Session, the birthpangs of religious dissent, and the growth of royal power to such a remarkable extent that this king could leave his kingdom for nine months in 1536-7 without fear of rebellion. Jamie Cameron concentrates on James V's style of government and relations with his nobility, and challenges the widely held view of a vindictive and irrational king, motivated largely by greed, who antagonised most of his leading magnates and met his just deserts when they refused to support him in 1542. This book offers a different view, and presents us with a rounded picture of a king whose approach to government, in spite of some personal defects, closely resembles that of his supposedly more popular father; and, like James IV himself, retained impressive magnate support to the end of his reign.
