Book excerpt: The History of the 101st Airborne Division is the epic story of the Division from its activation in August 1942 through the completion of Operation Desert Storm in April 1991. The Division’s progression through the sky took decades of hard work and tens of thousands of dedicated soldiers. In World War II, the 101st became the first American troops to set foot in occupied France, when, on 6 June 1944, its paratroopers dropped behind enemy lines, clearing the way for the 4th Infantry Division landing on Utah Beach. The Division would become famous for its work in Holland during Operation Market Garden, and for its successful defense of Bastogne, Belgium, during the Battle of the Bulge. In Vietnam, the “Screaming Eagles” engaged in battle from 1965 to 1972, when they began their evolution to Air Mobile by deploying by helicopter. In the Gulf War, the Division fired the first shots of Operation Desert Storm by destroying Iraqi radar sites, and during ground war of the operation, they made the longest and largest air assault in history. In every engagement and during the training periods in between, the 101st Airborne Division has honored the words of its first commander, General William C. Lee, that it has a “rendezvous with destiny.” This book is a fitting record of that history, and of the men who are proud to be called “Screaming Eagles.”

Accompanying these remarkable D-Day color Kodachromes—which were unearthed in the attic of an Army doctor’s daughter—are more than two hundred black-and-white photographs from 101st survivors and the author’s own private collection. This is an unprecedented look at an elite fighting force during one of the last century’s most crucial moments.

Book excerpt: Formed at the beginning of World War II, the 101st Airborne Division has fought in almost every major conflict since then, including Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom. Going from a parachute and glider infantry in its early days to an air assault division in our own--the only one in the world--the "Screaming Eagles" are trained to destroy enemy forces while seizing land and resources. They are a rapid deployment group prepared to go anywhere in the world within thirty-six hours. And, for good reason, they are probably the best-known army division in the world. In this book, top military photographer and former U.S. Army Ranger Russ Bryant takes you inside the 101st Airborne. In training and in action, on land and in the air: Here are the Screaming Eagles as youve never seen them, in a close-up, multi-faceted portrait of courage and skill as a fact of everyday life. The book brilliantly illustrates why the 101st Airborne is the vanguard in its field--and in the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of eyewitness accounts of the Normandy landings that “gives you the [feeling] that you are there during the frenzied first hours of the invasion” (Kepler’s Military History Book Reviews). Many professional historians have recorded the actions of D-Day but here is an account of the airborne actions as described by the actual men themselves, in eyewitness detail. Participants range from division command personnel to regimental, battalion, company, and battery commanders, to chaplains, surgeons, enlisted medics, platoon sergeants, squad leaders and the rough, tough troopers who adapted quickly to fighting in mixed, unfamiliar groups after a badly scattered drop. And yet they managed to gain the objectives set for them in the hedgerow country of Normandy. This book is primary source material. It is a “must read” for anyone interested in the Normandy landings, the 101st Airborne Division, and World War II in general. Hearing the soldiers speak is an entirely different experience from reading about the action in a narrative history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A member of the 101st Airborne’s Glider Infantry recalls WWII, from the horror of D-Day to the despair of Nazi captivity, in this compelling memoir. As World War II broke out, Robert Bowen was drafted into Company C, 401st Glider Infantry, 101st Airborne Division. Soon afterwards, he found himself storming Utah Beach amid the chaos of D-Day, through unfamiliar terrain littered with minefields and hidden snipers. Bowen was wounded during the Normandy campaign but went on to fight in Holland and the Ardennes, where he was captured. That’s when his “trip through hell” truly began. In each of Bowen’s campaigns, the 101st “Screaming Eagles” spearheaded the Allied effort against the Nazi occupation of Europe. At Bastogne, they stood nearly alone against the onslaught of enemy panzers and grenadiers. His insights into life behind enemy lines after his capture provide as much fascination as his exploits on the battlefield. Written shortly after the war, Bowen’s narrative is immediate and compelling. An introduction by the world’s foremost historian of the 101st Airborne, George Koskimaki, further enhances this classic work.

Book excerpt: On September 17, 1944, in broad daylight, the Allies launched the largest airborne operation ever conducted. The objective: to secure a road in Nazi-occupied Holland and a bridge across the Rhine for ground troops to advance into Germany . . . and to end the war by Christmas. For the 101st Airborne, charged with seizing key bridges, that road became known as Hells Highway, and it saw what may have been the most savagely fought single action in the divisions history. This book tells the story of that battle at its most desperate, and the Screaming Eagles of the 101st Airborne at their most courageous. A concise, authoritative account of the bold but ultimately unsuccessful push across the Rhine, this book recounts some of the most dramatic combat of World War II. Published in conjunction with Gearbox Softwares Brothers in Arms: Hells Highway, it also features selected screen shots from the game, reenactor action, and a wealth of maps and period archival photographs that bring Hells Highway to harrowing life.

Book excerpt: After World War II the first real action the 101st saw was in July 1965 when the 1st Brigade of the 'Screaming Eagles' was blooded in the Song Con Valley, Vietnam. It acted as a rapid reaction force, reinforcing American and South Vietnamese forces when necessary, becoming expert in rapid helicopter assaults. The 2nd and 3rd Brigades arrived in December 1967 in time to take part in the reaction to the North Vietnamese Tet Offensive. The 101st and the 1st Cavalry were sent in to recapture Hue in a battle that raged for three weeks and was the only extended urban combat of the war. Following Tet the 101st saw continuous combat including fighting on Hill 937-'Hamburger Hill'-which was some of the most brutal of the war. The last Army division to leave South Vietnam, the 101st spent almost seven years in combat. Book jacket.
