Excerpt: ... lKeprinted from American Medicine, Vol. viii, No. 19, pages 795-805, November 5,1904.1 the history of pediatrics and its relation to other sciences and arts, ' by A. jacobi, M.D., ll.D., of New York City. Professor Emeritus, Columbia University, New York. The most human of all the gods ever created by the fancy or the religious cravings of mortal men was Phoebus Apollo. It was he that gave its daily light to the wakening world, flattered the senses of the select with music, filled the songs of the bards and the hearts of their hearers with the rhythm and wonders of poetry, that inspired and reveled with the muses of the Parnassus, cheered the world with the artistic creations of the fertile brains and skilful hands of a Zeuxis and Phidias--he, always he, that inflicted and healed warriors' wounds and sent and cured deadly diseases. In the imagination of a warm-hearted and unsophisticated people it took a god to embrace and bestow all that is most beneficent and sublime--physical, moral, and mental light and warmth; the sun, the arts, poetry, and the most human and humane of all sciences and arts, namely, medicine. Ancient gods no longer direct or control our thoughts, feelings, and enjoyments, either physical or intellectual. The kinship and correlation of hypotheses and studies, experience and knowledge are in the keeping of the philosophical mind of man, who is both their creator and beneficiary. To demonstrate this rational affinity of all the sciences and arts, some far-seeing men planned this great Congress. The new departure--in the arrangement for it-

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's parents routinely consult pediatricians for care of sick youngsters, information on child development, and advice on problems of child management. Yet only a hundred years ago, special medical services for children barely existed. During the intervening century, physicians defined a new field and built occupational structures that established pediatrics as a permanent division of medical practice. Professor Halpern traces the development of American pediatrics over the last century and identifies social processes underlying its evolution. How did the pediatric specialty arise? Through what processes did it emerge? What forces shaped its changing scope and organization? In addressing these questions, the author draws on a rich combination of primary and secondary historical sources, unpublished documents, and interview data. She shows how successive generations of specialists redefined pediatrics and created a series of occupational institutions, including professional societies, academic divisions, training programs, and certifying boards. American Pediatrics offers an original approach to the study of medical specialties and professions and contributes a new perspective on professionalism. Showing specialties to be both products and agents of societal change, the book highlights multiple and interrelated forces contributing to the rise of new professions and documents the influence of surrounding occupations on the shape specialties assume. Halpern enriches our understanding of American medicine and clarifies the origins of expert services for children and families. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before a separate Department of Medical Humanities was formed, the editors of this volume were faculty members of the Department of Pediatrics at our medical school. Colleagues daily spoke of the moral and social problems of children's health care. Our offices were near the examining rooms where children had their bone-marrow procedures done. Since this is a painful test, we often heard them cry. The hospital floor where the sickest children stayed was also nearby. The physicians, nurses, and social workers believed that children's health care needs were not being met and that more could and should be done. Fewer resources are available for a child than for an adult with a comparable illness, they said. These experiences prompted us to prepare this volume and to ask whether children do get their fair share of the health care dollar. Since the question "What kind of health care do we owe to our children?" is complex, responses should be rooted in many disciplines. These include philosophy, law, public policy and, of course, the health professions. Representing all of these disciplines, contributors to this volume reflect on moral and social issues in children's health care. The last hundred years have brought great changes in health care tor children. The specialty of pediatrics developed during this period, and with it, a new group of advocates for children's health care. Women's suffrage gave a political boost to the recognition of children's special health needs.
