Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russell's History of Modern Europe Epitomised: Forming a Complete d104-Book of Modern History Within the compass of this volume the reader is presented with an epitome of Russell's larger work, upon the History of Modern Europe. It remains the favourite guide to a knowledge of the various subjects of which it treats; and has very recently been recom mended as a text-book by the Government Civil Service Commissioners and the Earl of Clarendon. No modern work enjoys a similar reputation, and it is in all respects a safe authority. Every fact and the date of all the events recorded in these pages have been verified, original matter has been introduced, and the entire work submitted to the most careful revision. In epitomising this valuable book of reference the editor has endeavoured to give as fair a View of the leading details of modern history, as was possible Within the limits. The more interesting portions of the sub ject, that stand out in bold and full relief on the map of the past, have been described at greater length, while less important matters have been abridged, without, however, interrupting the thread of the narrative. In fact the editor's aim has been to supply what has long been wanting in English literature - a Handbook, in which the chief events of Modern History are set forth in a clear, concise, and intelligent form. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Modern Europe, Vol. 1 The second and less important group of authorities with which I have busied myself during the work of revision com prises the works of Hiiffer, Vivenot, Beer, Helfert, and others, based on Austrian documents, along with the Austrian docu ments and letters that have been published by Vivenot. The last-named writer is himself a partizan, but the material which he has given to the world is most valuable. The mystery in which the Austrian Government until lately enveloped all its actions caused some of these to be described as worse than they really were and I believe that in the First Edition I under estimated the bias of Prussian and north-german writers. Where I have seen reasons to alter any statements, I have done so without reserve, as it appears to me childish for any one who attempts to write history to cling to an Opinion after the balance of evidence seems to be against it. The publication of the second volume of this work has been delayed by the revision of the first; but I hope that it will appear before many months more. I must express my obligations to Mr. Oscar Browning, a fellow-labourer in the same field, who not only furnished me with various corrections, but placed his own lectures at my disposal; and to Mr. Alfred Kingston, whose unfailing kindness and courtesy make so great a difference to those whose work lies in the department of the Record Otfice which is under his care. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Europe Since large numbers of pupils begin the study of modern history with no previous course in ancient or medieval history, the first two sections are devoted to a survey of the institutions of the eighteenth century with a brief account of the development of those institutions from earlier ones. It is hoped that these sections will strengthen the idea of continuity - that all history is the story of institutions and ideas changing to meet changed conditions. Anyone who wishes to give a true picture of modern Europe and its development must deal with many controversial questions. Of course no one yet knows the correct answer to many of the problems raised in this book. We have tried to give both sides of these ques tions, not always attempting to conceal our own opinions. To safe guard pupils against opinions that may be unsound we have advised them in Chapter I that this book, like any other on history, must be studied with a critical point of view. In the questions for discussion at the end of each chapter we have further challenged them to test their own opinions against ours. We urge teachers to encourage pupils to question opinions expressed here and elsewhere, believing that a critical attitude toward all sources of information is one of the most valuable products of good teaching. We are indebted to too many of our friends in schools and colleges to make any list of their names or give any adequate expression of our appreciation for their advice and criticism. We are especially indebted to hundreds of our pupils who have served as laboratory material and from whom we have learned more than they have from us. In their name, then, we humbly dedicate this text to the thou sands of boys and girls in the secondary schools of the country, with the hope that it will help them to grow in understanding of the world in which they find themselves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historical Development of Modern Europe, Vol. 2: From the Congress of Vienna to the Present Time; 1850-1897 N this, the second and concluding volume on the history of modern Europe, I have resumed the narrative at the point where it was dropped at the close of the previous volume, and carried it forward to the year 1897. Employing throughout the plan and method originally adopted, I have dealt with only those countries that have been influential in shaping the history Of continental Europe during the last seventy-five years, and have treated only those phases of their history that concern the historical development of Europe in the larger sense, rather than the historical development of each particular state or country. On the ground that no event can be understood in isolation, and that history is something more than a series of events chronologically considered, I have endeavoured to give logical form to my treatment of the subject, carrying each movement forward to its conclusion before turning to the others; and that due proportions might be preserved, have introduced nothing that did not seem to me absolutely meces sary to an understanding of the subject, giving no more atten tion to any incident, however picturesque or dramatic, than its importance for my purpose warranted. In my treatment of the various movements I have given little space to descriptions of military campaigns, not because I object to drum-and-trumpet history, but because I believe that the details of battles and the movements of troops belong, except in their consequences, to the student of military strategy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of Modern Europe, Vol. 1: An Introduction to the Study of Current History There are some teachers, perhaps, who would seek to justify the current disregard of recent history, but many others would agree with one of the guild who, when criticised for giving more attention in her instruction to Charlemagne than to Bismarck, complained with truth, But we know so much more about Charlemagne than about Bismarck. The great majority of those interested in history would no doubt gladly readjust their perspective if they had the means of doing so; and, indeed, there has been a marked improvement in this respect in the newer books which are giving more and more space to recent events.
