Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of India, Vol. 1 But the excellence of histories derived from European researches alone does not entirely set aside the utility of similar inquiries conducted un der the guidance of impressions received in India; which, as they rise from a separate source, may sometimes lead to different conclusions. Few are likely to take up these volumes unless they are previously interested in the subject, and such persons may not be unwilling to examine it from a fresh point of View: if the result suggests no new opinions, it may at least assist in deciding on those contested by former writers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of India, Vol. 1 Not the least historic of the ancient nations of the East is India, even when compared with Egypt and its monuments, China and its annals, or Assyria and Babylonia with their cuneiform tablets and their cylinders. India's earliest records, written in its literature, have been inscribed in the hearts of the people for more than three thousand years; and from that remote age its history is recorded in an almost unbroken line to this very century, so that he who will may follow its development through the early centuries that preceded the Christian era, onward through the mediaeval period of Mohammedan rule, down to the days when the Europeans entered India and the country came under British dominion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of India, Vol. 1: From the Earliest Times to the End of the Nineteenth Century India is the vast and varied Italy of Asia: a great promontory, imperfectly fenced on the north by a snowy highland, jutting southward into the ocean, with a detached island at its foot. Across the northern barrier invading hordes have poured in all ages, sometimes bringing rapine, sometimes conquest of a more or less beneficial kind. On the side of the sea the movement has been that of departure and emigration, traces of which are found not only in the adjacent island of Ceylon, but farther off, in Burma, Siam, and Cambodia, and in the islands of the Equatorial belt. Of these movements, however, we possess but an indirect record. The early inhabitants were too rude and savage; the early conquerors took to other paths of learning, but had no taste for history. It is thus that we are driven to the study of the map when we would learn anything of the remote past; and to found our historical edifice on the shifting basis of conjecture. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of India From the Earliest Ages, Vol. 1 More than a century has passed away since the rise Of British ascendancy in India, and yet a history which should combine a tolerably exhaustive review of the religion and civilization of the Hindus, together with an exposition of the policy which has hitherto guided the British Govern ment in its dealings with Native powers, is still a deside ratum in European literature. Accordingly this task has been attempted during a residence of some years in the country, under circumstances peculiarly favourable to its accomplishment; and in announcing the early publication of the first three volumes, it seems desirable to indicate the general character and scope of the entire work. The materials for the History of India may be indicated under three distinct heads, viz. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of British India, Vol. 1: From 1805 to 1835 The third and last class of authorities to which extensive application has been made, consists of the published accounts of persons engaged or interested in the occurrences which they have related. There is a great body of contemporary evidence of this description, varying in merit and in weight, but exacting attention from all who wish to obtain an accurate knowledge of the origin and progress of events. The perusal in more or less detail of as many publications of this class as I could meet with, has contributed to retard the completion of my task beyond the limits within which I had trusted that it would have been concluded. This book was released on 2018-04-23 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of India, Vol. 1: By Its Own Historians; The Muhammadan Period The great objection to this arrangement in an his torical work is that it separates, more than necessary, materials relating to the same person and the same sub jcet. Thus the Tarikh-i Bade'u'mi of 'abdu - l Kadir is particularly valuable for the details it gives of the reign and character of Akbar under whom the writer lived. But this is a general history, and so would be far removed from the akbar-rama of Abl'i-l Fazl, which is a special history comprising only the reign of Akbar. A simple chronological succession, irrespective of the general or special character of the different works, seems with the single exception of the Sindian writers to be the most convenient historical arrangement, and it will therefore be adopted in the subsequent volumes. This plan will not entirely obviate the objection above noticed, but it will tend greatly to its diminution. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of India The rise of Mohammed and the spread of Islam were events fraught with momentous consequences for the East and for the history of the world. India came in for her share in the changes thus brought about and was subjected to the religious and political sway of this great movement whose impulse she first felt in the eighth century of the Christian era. So important in general and so far-reaching were the influences exerted that few readers will object to the fact that three vol umes of the present series are devoted to this period of Indian history which is commonly designated as the Mediaeval Period. Book excerpt: Excerpt from India, Vol. 1 of 2: Past and Present In one way or another I have maintained a continuous connection with India since my birth, which occurred at Calcutta in the days when the "voyage home" was made "round the Cape." During my school-days in England, India was the residence of my parents, and of the parents of many of my comrades. It was the land whence came bronzed and bearded men, who gave us sovereigns and cricket-bats, and brought messages from the fathers and mothers who in too many instances had become mere memories of the vaguest kind. Chance, or more likely the mysterious attraction India has for the sons of fathers who have served her, drew me back to that country in early manhood. During a sojourn of several years I traveled from point to point, as duty dictated or pleasure prompted, and in that way a great deal of the vast area of India was covered, and most of its principal cities wore visited.
