Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of India From the Earliest Ages, Vol. 1 More than a century has passed away since the rise Of British ascendancy in India, and yet a history which should combine a tolerably exhaustive review of the religion and civilization of the Hindus, together with an exposition of the policy which has hitherto guided the British Govern ment in its dealings with Native powers, is still a deside ratum in European literature. Accordingly this task has been attempted during a residence of some years in the country, under circumstances peculiarly favourable to its accomplishment; and in announcing the early publication of the first three volumes, it seems desirable to indicate the general character and scope of the entire work. The materials for the History of India may be indicated under three distinct heads, viz. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of India From the Earliest Ages, Vol. 3 The present volume is complete in itself. It tells the history of India from a Hindu, Buddhist, and Brahmanical point of view. It starts from the remotest antiquity, and reaches right down to the appearance of the English in the Eastern seas. It does not deal with the Mussulman conquest or the Mussulman empire; as those subjects can scarcely be treated thoroughly, until the Hindu people have been well brought upon the stage; and although the history of Mussulman India has an intrinsic value and importance of its own, which entitle it to separate consideration, it throws little or no light upon the religious and social development of the Hindus. Whilst, however, the present work is complete in itself, it also forms the third volume of the history of India, the publication of which was begun as far back as 1867. It may therefore be advisable to describe more precisely the plan which was originally adopted for preparing a complete history of India, and the progress which has since been made towards its completion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of India, Vol. 3: From the Earliest Period to the Close of Lord Dalhousie's Administration The small proportion of the present work which has been allotted to the Hindoo and Mahomedan period of Indian history has been the subject of remark by those who have honoured the previous volumes with their notice. The author would therefore embrace the present opportunity of explaining that it was intimated to him by the Syndicate of the University of Calcutta that they had adopted Mr. Elphinstone's standard work in reference to that early period, and desired the present work to commence where he had left off, with the history of the British Empire in India. He was happy to be relieved from the necessity of going over ground which had been so fully occupied by that eminent writer, and cheerfully reduced the volume he had already compiled to the dimensions of a simple introduction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of India, From the Earliest Period to the Close of Lord Dalhousie's Administration, Vol. 3 Advancing from this spot, the traveller approaches the low hills, which compose, as it were, the outworks of the Himalaya. Of these, the elevation varies from 500 to 900 feet above the plains, and about above the level of the sea. The thick forest and brushwood with which they are clothed are full of peacocks; and, amidst game of less importance, the tiger is found; while hares, and the black and grey partridge, literally swarm around. There are, however, parts of the woody ranges beyond Keeree, so strongly infected with poisonous exhalations, that at the worst season they are deserted even by the brute creation; monkeys, tigers, every species of quadruped, and even the birds, urged by some instinctive warning, quit the deadly Spot, and seek a resting-place in distant and more healthy neighbourhoods. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of India, Vol. 1: From the Earliest Times to the End of the Nineteenth Century India is the vast and varied Italy of Asia: a great promontory, imperfectly fenced on the north by a snowy highland, jutting southward into the ocean, with a detached island at its foot. Across the northern barrier invading hordes have poured in all ages, sometimes bringing rapine, sometimes conquest of a more or less beneficial kind. On the side of the sea the movement has been that of departure and emigration, traces of which are found not only in the adjacent island of Ceylon, but farther off, in Burma, Siam, and Cambodia, and in the islands of the Equatorial belt. Of these movements, however, we possess but an indirect record. The early inhabitants were too rude and savage; the early conquerors took to other paths of learning, but had no taste for history. It is thus that we are driven to the study of the map when we would learn anything of the remote past; and to found our historical edifice on the shifting basis of conjecture. Moghul Empire, Aurangzeb The history of Muhammadan rule in India, from the early Arab conquests in Scinde down to the end of the reign of Shah J ehan, has already been treated in Part I. Of the present volume. Part II., which is now submitted to the public, deals with the violent reaction of bigotry and intolerance which character ised the reign of Aurangzeb, the son and successor of Shah J ehan. Aurangzeb professed to be a Sunni Muhammadan of the strictest type. He gained the throne by hypocrisy and. Murder, and then lavished the strength and treasures of the empire in the hope less attempt to crush out idolatry and heterodoxy, and to establish the religion of the Koran as the dominant faith of the people of India. Then followed popular tumults, Rajpfit revolts, and Mahratta up risings, which sapped the vitality of the Moghul Empire, and rendered it an easy prey to internal enemies and foreign invaders. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of India: From the Earliest Times to the Present Day It were greatly to be wished that Mr. Wilson, instead of writing notes to, and continuing the History of Mill, had become himself the historian of our Indian Empire. I know no one so well qualified to write that history in all its fulness, with all the detail which would leave nothing to be desired for though Thornton's has many merits, and is written with much impartiality, it is rather a popular history, and the author avoids going much into detail, contenting himself with general views. As to Mill, I always regretted that he should have become the historian of India for though I have not the slightest doubt of his honesty, his political notions were too utopian, and his prejudices so strong, that perhaps a third Of his work is useless, and all his elaborate reasonings and theories are refuted by his annotator, often by simply showing that he was unacquainted with the real facts, and was combating a phantom of his own creation. As a writer on public law and political economy, Mr. Mill would, I think, be more in his place than as a historian.
