Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of India From the Earliest Ages, Vol. 1 More than a century has passed away since the rise Of British ascendancy in India, and yet a history which should combine a tolerably exhaustive review of the religion and civilization of the Hindus, together with an exposition of the policy which has hitherto guided the British Govern ment in its dealings with Native powers, is still a deside ratum in European literature. Accordingly this task has been attempted during a residence of some years in the country, under circumstances peculiarly favourable to its accomplishment; and in announcing the early publication of the first three volumes, it seems desirable to indicate the general character and scope of the entire work. The materials for the History of India may be indicated under three distinct heads, viz. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of India, Vol. 1: From the Earliest Times to the End of the Nineteenth Century India is the vast and varied Italy of Asia: a great promontory, imperfectly fenced on the north by a snowy highland, jutting southward into the ocean, with a detached island at its foot. Across the northern barrier invading hordes have poured in all ages, sometimes bringing rapine, sometimes conquest of a more or less beneficial kind. On the side of the sea the movement has been that of departure and emigration, traces of which are found not only in the adjacent island of Ceylon, but farther off, in Burma, Siam, and Cambodia, and in the islands of the Equatorial belt. Of these movements, however, we possess but an indirect record. The early inhabitants were too rude and savage; the early conquerors took to other paths of learning, but had no taste for history. It is thus that we are driven to the study of the map when we would learn anything of the remote past; and to found our historical edifice on the shifting basis of conjecture. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of India, Vol. 1 But the excellence of histories derived from European researches alone does not entirely set aside the utility of similar inquiries conducted un der the guidance of impressions received in India; which, as they rise from a separate source, may sometimes lead to different conclusions. Few are likely to take up these volumes unless they are previously interested in the subject, and such persons may not be unwilling to examine it from a fresh point of View: if the result suggests no new opinions, it may at least assist in deciding on those contested by former writers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of India, Vol. 1 Not the least historic of the ancient nations of the East is India, even when compared with Egypt and its monuments, China and its annals, or Assyria and Babylonia with their cuneiform tablets and their cylinders. India's earliest records, written in its literature, have been inscribed in the hearts of the people for more than three thousand years; and from that remote age its history is recorded in an almost unbroken line to this very century, so that he who will may follow its development through the early centuries that preceded the Christian era, onward through the mediaeval period of Mohammedan rule, down to the days when the Europeans entered India and the country came under British dominion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of India: From the Earliest Times to the Present Day The historic literature of our Indian Empire is very creditable to the servants of the Company. It commences, as is well known, with the History of the Military Transactions of the British Nation in Indostan, of Orme, the Thucydides, as we may style him, of our Indian Empire for, like the illustrious Athenian, he has narrated with fulness, candour, and impartiality, the struggle for dominion of two potent nations and viewing the affairs of Bengal as episodic, his work, though unfinished, possesses an epic unity. The style is remarkably clear, and not devoid of picturesqueness and animation and as to the objection that has been made, of his being too minute, I very much doubt if that be a fault, in one who has to furnish materials for all future writers on the same subject. Certain I am, that without reading Orme's work, we, shall never fully understand the mode in which the foundations 'of our wonderful empire in India were laid. It ought to be esteemed one of the classics of our language, and the species of oblivion into which it appears to have fallen is a discredit to our nation. I think, however, that if a new edition of it were published, in the octavo form, with notes by a competent person-mr. Wilson, for example, -and lithographed copies of the excellent plans which it contains, it saahld find many readers and purchasers. After Orme's History may be mentioned the various historical writings of Wilks, Duff, Malcolm, Todd, and many others, all of which are extremely valuable. It were greatly to be wished that Mr. Wilson, instead of writing notes to, and continuing the History of Mill, had become himself the historian of our Indian Empire. I know no one so well qualified to write that history in all its fulness, with all the detail which would leave nothing to be desired for though Thornton's has many merits, and is written with much impartiality, it is rather a popular history, and the author avoids going much into detail, contenting himself with general views. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of India From the Earliest Ages, Vol. 3 The present volume is complete in itself. It tells the history of India from a Hindu, Buddhist, and Brahmanical point of view. It starts from the remotest antiquity, and reaches right down to the appearance of the English in the Eastern seas. It does not deal with the Mussulman conquest or the Mussulman empire; as those subjects can scarcely be treated thoroughly, until the Hindu people have been well brought upon the stage; and although the history of Mussulman India has an intrinsic value and importance of its own, which entitle it to separate consideration, it throws little or no light upon the religious and social development of the Hindus. Whilst, however, the present work is complete in itself, it also forms the third volume of the history of India, the publication of which was begun as far back as 1867. It may therefore be advisable to describe more precisely the plan which was originally adopted for preparing a complete history of India, and the progress which has since been made towards its completion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of India Under the Two First Sovereigns of the House of Taimur, Baber and Humayun, Vol. 1 of 2 When there are already so many histories of India in the English language, it may reasonably be asked, why an attempt should be made to add another to the number.
