Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of England From the Year 1830, Vol. 2 WE now enter on the history of a reign the events of which are equal in importance to those of any that has preceded it, and which has as good a title as anv to be denominated the Augustan period of English literature; a reign which has been illustrated not only by the events which it is the more especial business of the historian to record, but also by the poetical genius of Wordsworth and Tennyson; by the historical and other works of Carlyle, Macaulay, and Buckle; by the ingenious and thought-suggestive speculations of Darwin and of the anonymous author of the Vestz'ges of Creation; by the scientific researches of Faraday, Owen, and Huxley; by the geological investigations of Buckland, Murchison, and Lyell; by the romances of Bulwer Lytton, Dickens, and Thackeray; by the invention of the electric and magnetic telegraphs; by works of unsurpassed excel lence in science and philosophy, in sculpture, painting, archi tecture, and music; as well as by important social, political, moral, and religious progress. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of England From the Year 1830, Vol. 1 In that large portion of my work which is altogether new I propose to follow with regard to the debates on questions of great national importance the plan adopted in my History of the Reform Bill of 1832. I have given the report of the speeches which throw most light on the question, and on the manner in which it was received and regarded by different parties, in a very shortened form. Exordia, perorations, flights of rhetoric, even flights of eloquence, have been remorselessly pruned away, and the residue has been greatly condensed; but the style, and, as far as possible, the very words, of each orator have been carefully preserved. I am aware that there are other histories which cover a portion more or less considerable of the ground over which this work is intended to extend; but their point of departure is different, and so also are the presiding ideas under which they are written. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Continuation of the History of England, Vol. 2 He had, in his answer to their former address, assured them of his constant regard to the rights and prosperity of the nation: he had explained the exhausted state of the Dutch; cx-patiated upon the zeal of that republic for the interests of Britain, as well as the maintenance of the protestant religion; and expressed his hope that the English parliament would not only repay the sums they had expended in his expedition, but likewise fur ther support them to the utmost of their ability against the common enemies of their liberties and religion. He had observed that a considerable army and fleet would be necessary for the reduction of Ireland and the pro tection of Britain, and he desired they would settle the revenue in such a manner that it might be collected without difficulty and dispute. The sum total of the money expended by the states - general in William's expedition amounted to seven millions of guilders, and the commons granted six hundred thousand pounds for the discharge of this debt, incurred for the preservation of their rights and religion. They voted funds for rais ing and maintaining an army of two-and-twenty thou sand men, as well as for equipping a numerous fleet but they provided for no more than half a year's sub sistence of the tr00ps, heping the reduction of Ireland might be finished in that term; and this instance of frugality the king considered as a mark of their difii dence of his administration. The whigs were resolved to supply him gradually, that he might be the more dependent upon their zeal and attachment; but he was not at all pleased with their precaution.
