Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Antiquity, Vol. 2 About the middle course of the Tigris, where the mountain wall of the Armenian plateau steeply descends to the south, there is a broad stretch of hilly country. To the west it is traversed by a few water-courses only, which spring out of the mountains of Sindyar, and unite with the Tigris; from the east the affluents are far more abundant. On the southern shore of the lake of Urumiah the edge of the plateau of Iran abuts on the Armenian table-land, and then, stretching to the south-east, it bounds the river valley of the Tigris toward the east. From its vast, successive ranges, the Zagrus of the Greeks, flow the Lycus and Caprus (the Greater and the Lesser Zab), the Adhim and the Diala. The water, which these rivers convey to the land between the Zagrus and the Tigris, together with the elevation of the soil, softens the heat and allows olive trees and vines to flourish in the cool air on the hills, sesame and corn in the valleys between groups of palms and fruit-trees. The backs of the heights which rise to the east are covered by forests of oaks and nut trees. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Rome, Vol. 1 of 6 He appears to have conceived the project of writing his history, immediately upon his settling at Rome; or, perhaps, he came thither for the purpose of collecting the necessary materials for that great work. Augustus appointed him preceptor to his grandson Claudius, afterwards emperor. But he seems not much to have attended to the advantage which might have resulted from so advantageous a connection, and to have occupied himself, entirely, in the composition of his history; parts of which, as they were finished, he read to Augustus and Macanas. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Rome, Vol. 1: Books I.-XX IN this new English version of the most elegant of the Roman historians the object of the translatorhas been to adhere as closely to the original text as is consistent with the idioms of the respective languages. But while thus providing more especially for the wants of the classical student, he has not been unmindful of the neatness and perspicuity required to satisfy the English reader. There have been several previous translations of our author, but the only one now before the public, or deserv ing of particular mention, is that by Baker, which is un doubtedly a very able performance, and, had it been more faithful, would have rendered any other unnecessary. The edition used for the present translation is that pub lished at Oxford under the superintendence of Travers Twiss, Whose carefully-revised text is by far the 'best ex tant. The few notes and illustrations which the limits of an edition in this popular form permit are chie y confined to the explanation of grammatical difficulties. Historical and antiquarian illustration is now so abundantly supplied by excellent Manuals and Dictionaries, that it has been deemed unnecessary to swell the present volumes by ad ditions in that department. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of Ancient History, Vol. 1 The stories here presented to the public are taken from the second book of his history; because Egypt, whose annals embrace the utmost verge of antiquity, is the subject of that portion of it; and the author making the facts mentioned by Herodotus his foundation, has endeavoured to rear upon them a super structure - as far as possible following reality for his guide. Even where he has ventured into the region of fiction, he has taken care not to adduce any thing contrary to the tenor of history: where it is silent, he has so filled up the chasm as to continue the thread of each story; but it has been his constant plan. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Ancient World, Vol. 1 of 3: From the Earliest Records to the Fall of the Western Empire Such a work, to be really useful, must be condensed into a moderate compass; else the powers Of the writer would be frit tered away, and the attention of the reader wearied out, by an overwhelming bulk, filled up with microscopic details. The more striking facts of history, - the rise and fall of empires, - the achievements of warriors and heroes, - the struggles of peoples for their rights and freedom, - the conflict between priestcraft and religious liberty, - must needs stand out on the canvas of such a picture with the prominence they claim in the world itself. But they will not divert our attention from the more quiet and influ ential working of science and art, social progress and individual thought, - the living seed sown, and the fruit borne, in the field broken up by those outward changes.
