Download or read book Auto Racing in the Shadow of the Great War written by Robert Dick and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2019-02-21 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1915 through the early 1920s, American auto racing experienced rapid and exciting change. Competition by European vehicles forced American car manufacturers to incorporate new features, resulting in legendary engineering triumphs (and, essentially, works of art). Some of the greatest drivers in racing history were active during this time--Ralph DePalma, Dario Resta, Eddie Rickenbacker, the Chevrolet brothers, Jimmy Murphy. Presenting dozens of races in detail and a wealth of engineering specs, this history recalls the era's cigar-shaped speedway specials and monumental board tracks, the heavy-footed drivers, fearless mechanics, gifted engineers and enthusiastic backers.

Book Synopsis Wall Smacker - The saga of the speedway by : Peter De Paolo
Download or read book Wall Smacker - The saga of the speedway written by Peter De Paolo and published by Edizioni Savine. This book was released on 2013-11-29 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “ ...The pages that follow are not offered as an attempt at literary style or excellence. I am far from being a writer, and, to tell the truth, “Wall Smacker” was the hardest task I’ve ever undertaken. It was my good fortune, however, to have had my career as an automobile racing driver during a glamorous and pioneering period of the sport era both in America and on the Continent that produced many immortals of the “Roaring Road,” and was packed with events and incidents of unusual interest to all followers of speed. Many of my friends, realizing this, have urged me repeatedly to write my reminiscences in the form of an autobiography. Here, at last they are. I’ll feel fully repaid for my efforts if this book is entertaining, and happy, indeed, if it serves to keep alive at least a few of the episodes of a great chapter in the history of American automobile racing...” Peter De Paolo - November 1st, 1935. (Peter De Paolo was the American race car driver who won the 1925 Indianapolis 500)
Book Synopsis All American Speedway by : Bill Poindexter
Download or read book All American Speedway written by Bill Poindexter and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It began as a rodeo arena with bucking broncos entertaining an annual gathering for the Placer County Fair in Roseville, California, about 10 miles east of Sacramento. The rodeo grounds eventually gave way to a different kind of horsepower in 1955, when a dirt track was built. The original Roseville Speedway later became All American Speedway. The surface was paved in 1972, and three years later, its signature race, the Rose Classic, was born. Future NASCAR drivers Ernie Irvan, Mike Skinner, and more visited the track. The Rose Classic went away in the early 1990s, but NASCAR Whelen All-American Series action lives on each year.

Download or read book Kentucky Speedway written by Kevin Kelly and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015-03-16 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of Kentucky Speedway is as colorful as the flags waved from its flag stand and the cars that dart around its 1.5-mile track. The path to its position on NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series schedule included more twists and turns than the roads leading to Sparta, Kentucky. Ultimately, it took Speedway Motorsports Inc. buying the track from its founders in 2008 for developer Jerry Carroll's vision to be realized three years later when the venue hosted its inaugural Quaker State 400. It is all part of the history of a speedway that brought a major-league sport to the Bluegrass State.
Book Synopsis American Auto Racing by : J.A. Martin
Download or read book American Auto Racing written by J.A. Martin and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2004-03-19 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As soon as there were automobiles, there was racing. The first recorded race, an over road event from Paris to Rouen, France, was organized by the French newspaper Le Petit Journal in 1894. Seeing an opportunity for a similar event, Hermann H. Kohlsaat--publisher of the Chicago Times-Herald--sponsored what was hailed as the "Race of the Century," a 54-mile race from Chicago's Jackson Park to Evanston, Illinois, and back. Frank Duryea won in a time of 10 hours and 23 minutes, of which 7 hours and 53 minutes were actually spent on the road. Race cars and competition have progressed continuously since that time, and today's 200 mph races bear little resemblance to the event Duryea won. This work traces American auto racing through the 20th century, covering its significant milestones, developments and personalities. Subjects included are: Bill Elliott, dirt track racing, board track racing, Henry Ford, Grand Prix races, Dale Earnhardt, the Vanderbilt Cup, Bill France, Gordon Bennett, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the Mercer, the Stutz, Duesenberg, Frank Lockhart, drag racing, the Trans Am, Paul Newman, vintage racing, land speed records, Al Unser, Wilbur Shaw, the Corvette, the Cobra, Richard Petty, NASCAR, Can Am, Mickey Thompson, Roger Penske, Mario Andretti, Jeff Gordon, and Formula One. Through interviews with participants and track records, this text shows where, when and how racing changed. It describes the growth of each different form of auto racing as well as the people and technologies that made it ever faster.
