Book excerpt: J.F.J. Caldwell was an officer in McGowan's Brigade and published this brigade history in 1866, right after the Civil War. He takes us on a journey with the brigade from its beginning until the surrender at Appomattox. He tells of its involvement in many of the major battles of the Army of Northern Virginia, including Second Manassas (Bull Run) Antietam, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville, ending with Appomattox. His style is appealing and accurate. Robert E. Lee himself complimented this account as one of the best written in the post-war years.

Download or read book The 7th Tennessee Infantry in the Civil War written by William Thomas Venner and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-07-17 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book follows the 7th Tennessee Infantry Regiment from their May 1861 mustering-in to the war's final moments at Appomattox in April 1865. It is an intensely personal account based upon the Tennesseans' letters, journals, memoirs, official reports, personnel records and family histories. It is a powerful account of courage and sacrifice. The men (a full roster is included) changed from exhilarated volunteers to battle-hardened veterans. They had eagerly rushed to join up, "anxious to confront the enemy on the battle front." Later, amid the grim realities, the Tennesseans stayed with their comrades and carried out their responsibilities. Rifleman Tom Holloway wrote, "I went into this measure with the conviction that it was my imperative duty." Eventually, as the war destroyed the Tennesseans, Lt. Ferguson Harris wrote simply, "I wonder who will be the last of us to go?"
Book Synopsis South Carolinians in the Battle of Gettysburg by : Derek Smith
Download or read book South Carolinians in the Battle of Gettysburg written by Derek Smith and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2021-04-02 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: July 1, 1863. The Confederate Army of Northern Virginia under General Robert E. Lee advanced across the Pennsylvania countryside toward the small town of Gettysburg--less than 90 miles from Washington, D.C.--on a collision course with the Union Army of the Potomac. In Lee's ranks were 5,000 South Carolina troops destined to play critical roles in the three days of fighting ahead. From generals to privates, the Palmetto State soldiers were hurled into the Civil War's most famous battle--hundreds were killed, wounded or later suffered as prisoners of war. The life-and-death stories of these South Carolinians are here woven together here with official wartime reports, previously unpublished letters, newspaper accounts, diaries and the author's personal observations from walking the battlefield.
