Onyala begins this work by tracing the social values and practice of social relations of the Northern Luo as from the ancient Kingdom of Kush; he also reveals on how the Luo have exerted considerable influence on the Greeks. Onyala reveals that the alphabet that most writers claim was developed by the Egyptian in reality was originally created as set of letters from the Luo people, when they were in the Kush Kingdom, a part of Egypt at that time. The book describes how the nine clans of the Northern Luo of South Sudan are related and how they later on separated from each other; the book goes further to describe the geography and demography of each of the Northern Luo clans and where they are today. The book examines the Luo's search for new settlements, including the challenges they faced as they marched through occupied lands in search of a new place to call home. The book reveals that Acholi clan (which is part of the Northern Luo) are the founders of Freedom and Democracy in South Sudan, a fact hardly spoken of today, due to the marginalisation of the Acholi in particular and the marginalisation of the Northern Luo in general within South Sudan. The book offers an opportunity for the men and women, boys and girls of the Northern Luo to understand the blood relationship that exists among them and appreciate the importance of reunification of the Luo groups by building a community of shared culture, beliefs and destiny. Book excerpt: Based on eleven months of field work (2009-2011), this book analyzes the situation of youth in urban Gulu, Northern Uganda, in the aftermath of the war between the Lord’s Resistance Army and the Ugandan Government (1986-2006). Specifically, it focuses on the generation that was born and grew up during the 20-year war: How do members of this generation perceive and evaluate socio-cultural changes which occurred in Acholi society throughout the war years? How do they imagine their future society? And how do they react to the expectations directed at them by their elders? In order to answer these questions, the book draws on rich ethnographic material. It provides an in-depth analysis of how imaginations of the post-war society are contested and negotiated between different groups of social actors – youth and elders, men and women as well as local, national and international actors. While some try to re-establish former cultural practices and conventions and call for a ‘retraditionalization’ of Acholi society, others lobby for ‘modernization’ and attempt to establish ‘new’ social structures, values and norms which are strongly influenced by local understandings of ‘the Western culture’. They possess long memories, especially about wars and events of great trauma. Labeled "blood memories" in this book, the author presents a pre-colonial history of Southern Sudan. Beginning in the fourteenth century, the book follows the region's largest ethnic group today, the Dinka, from their original homelands in the central Sudanese Gezira between the Blue and White Niles, into their more recently adopted homelands in Southern Sudan. The book demonstrates how fierce wars, ethnic struggles and expansion shaped the "inner" history of the South today. External slave trades by Muslim cattle nomads from West Africa, the Baggara, further shaped the socio-political and military culture of the region. The book ends at the dawning of the Egyptian colonial era in 1821. Then, by way of an epilogue, it demonstrates how these earlier pre-colonial stresses have come to play a critical role in modern-day South Sudan, in what has since become the world's longest civil war, presently fought externally against the fundamentalist Islamic Northern Sudanese government as well as internally within the South itself.

The Human Being is first described as an anonymous entity which worries about its human identity and takes great care of its physical appearance (Volume III), and then (in Volume IV) as an individual person who passes through all the different stages of human existence "from birth to death up to eternal life". As music and songs are of an existential significance during an Anyuak's entire lifetime, it is important to allow the reader to witness the physical sensations and spiritual forces which protect and carry an Anyuak on his or her journey from childhood up to old age and death. The recordings included here in Volume IV come in support of the reader's desire not only to learn about the Anyuak but to feel their presence in a physical, sensual and poetic manner.
