Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History and Antiquities of Tallaght in the County of Dublin Ll J HE want of local history has often been complained of, and few writers care to describe what is pass ing around them yet, in after years, how interesting do such records become! Old houses go to decay and their inhabitants die out in a comparatively short space of time no memory of either remains; and if any inquiry becomes necessary, there is great difficulty in finding out anything about them. Within the last two hundred years, what changes have taken place in the topography of our County of Dublin: new roads, new boundaries, buildings, and plantations, have in many places altered the face of the country. Woods which covered large tracts have dis appeared; wastes and marshes have been reclaimed and drained; hills formerly cultivated have again become covered with heath and furze, whilst others have been cleared and enclosed. How valuable would a History of the County of Dublin, such as d'alton's, written two hundred years ago, be in the present day. D'alton's is perhaps the only local History we have; and although it contains inaccuracies, still it is a most valuable record. Book Synopsis The History of the Irish Newspaper 1685-1760 by : Robert Munter
Download or read book The History of the Irish Newspaper 1685-1760 written by Robert Munter and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-02-11 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr Munter studies the growth and changing nature of the Irish periodical press from the time of the Protestant Ascendancy under William III to 1760, when provincial papers began to flourish outside Dublin. This was the period when newspapers were produced very largely in Dublin, mostly for local circulation among the English-speaking Protestant upper class. Dr Munter first sets the production of newspapers within the general history of Irish printing and bookselling, and the organisation of the trade. He then examines particular aspects of Irish newspaper history, presenting evidence about the importation of paper and the growth of local manufacture; the development of advertising and its importance as an element in the financial structure of the newspaper; evidence of the profitability of newspapers; circulation figures; the effect of the communications system on the supply and dissemination of news; the status of journalists and the development of the journalistic ethic; and analysis of the contents of the papers.

I HE earliest notice we have of Tamlacht, or Tallaght, is in the account of the destruction of the colony of Parthalon by the first recorded plague or pestilence, as related in the Annals of the Four Masters to have taken place in the year A.m. 2820. The entry by those Annalists is--" Nine thousand of Partholan's people died in one week, on Sean Mhagh Ealta Edair, viz., 5000 men and 4000 women, whence is named Tamlacht Muntire Parthalon, now called Tallaght, near Dublin." The word Tamh means an epidemic pestilence; and the term Tamlacht, the plague monument, which frequently enters into topographical names in Ireland, signifies a place where a number of persons cut off by pestilence were interred together. This destruction of the colony of Parthalon, which is said to have occurred in Sean Mhagh Etair, or the old plain of the Valley of the Flocks, stretching between Ben Edair (Howth) and Tallaght, on which the city of Dublin now stands, is thus mentioned in the " Book of Invasions," contained in the " Book of Leinster"--"In Sean Mhagh Etair, Parthalon became extinct in a thousand men and four thousand women of one week's mortality, or Tamh." This is the oldest manuscript account of the pestilence we now possess. This Partholanus, son of Leara, son of Sru, son of Easrue, son of Framant, son of Fartholda, son of Magog, son of Japhet, son of Noah, having slain his father and mother in Greece, in order to obtain the crown, and hinder his eldest brother of the succession, began his voyage from the country of Migdonia, in Greece, and steered by Sicily, and on until he came into the Irish Sea, and landed upon the 14th May, at a place called Inbher Sceine, in the west of Munster. His posterity continued in Ireland about three...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating history of an ancient place. From its first mention in legend in the Book of Invasions, through early Christian monastic settlements, castles and grand residences, Fenian raids and the Battle of Tallaght, there has been huge change in Tallaght. In more recent times it has seen car and motorcycle racing, an aerodrome, the rise and fall of a chocolate factory and a pioneering telecommunications firm. The massive population explosion and rapid modernisation towards the end of the twentieth century means this once-tiny village in Dublin's foothills is now home to over 80,000 people. Richly illustrated with period photographs and original drawings by Michael O'Brien, Albert Perris tells the often-surprising story of Tallaght.
