Book excerpt: A concise, beautifully-illustrated history of one of the British army s most celebrated Irish regiments from its origins in 1688 after the Glorious Revolution to 1876. A proudly Protestant unit, the regiment was first raised to defend the town of Enniskillen against Catholic forces loyal to James II. Taking part in the Battle of the Boyne and the Siege of Derry, the regiment became part of William III s Anglo-Dutch army fighting the French at the siege of Namur. It fought the Jacobite rebels at the battles of Falkirk and Culloden in 1745-6; and then saw service in the Seven Years War with France in the Americas and the Caribbean. After a 2nd and 3rd battalion was added to its strength, the Regiment saw service in Egypt and fought through the Peninsula War, taking part in the battles of Corunna, Busaco, and Olivenca, and the sieges of Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz. After entering Madrid, it fought under Wellington at the battles of Salamanca and Vitoria, stormed St Sebastian, and crossed the Pyrenees to take part in the battles of Orthes and Toulouse. The Regiment also fought at Waterloo. The Inniskillings defended Peshawar during the Indian Mutiny. Contains an Appendix, Roll of Colonels, Roll of Present Officers etc., and seven illustrations.

Book excerpt: This is one of the most valuable books in the armoury of the serious student of British Military history. It is a new and revised edition of Arthur White's much sought-after bibliography of regimental, battalion and other histories of all regiments and Corps that have ever existed in the British Army. This new edition includes an enlarged addendum to that given in the 1988 reprint. It is, quite simply, indispensible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a bold, painstakingly researched and wide-ranging assessment of the British Cheer in the Napoleonic era. Reference to the Cheer in accounts of the time is virtually ubiquitous and repeatedly the claim was made for cheering as an integral part of British offensive operations. However, more recent historians have tended to overlook this evidence. Based upon a vast range of contemporary sources, this book suggests that the Cheer wielded genuine power as a true 'weapon of war'. This book first surveys the history of acclamations in battle worldwide and British battle-cries from all periods, before addressing the question of what the British Cheer actually sounded like. Issues of acoustics, physics and the psychology of battlefield morale are considered, along with commentaries from significant military scholars throughout history. Examination of the Napoleonic-era Cheer then reveals the practically invincible 'recipe' of volley-cheer-charge that propelled the British Army to victory upon victory. Comparison is drawn with French and other national patterns of vocalizing, along with analysis of those occasions when the Cheer might be suppressed. Finally, the attitude of the Duke of Wellington towards cheering is reconsidered, with surprising results. This study encompasses a vast canvas of place and time in pursuit of the elusive yet galvanizing Cheer: from the Mahratta wars in India, through campaigns in Egypt, the Mediterranean, Flanders, the Caribbean and South America, as well as the war of 1812. The Peninsular and Waterloo campaigns feature prominently as the Cheer is heard thrillingly from Vimeiro to Talavera, Salamanca to Vitoria, Orthez to Toulouse and the shocking siege of Badajoz to the charge of the Scots Greys on the ridge of Mont Saint Jean. Anyone interested in the wars of Revolutionary France and Napoleon, the British army, the career of the Duke of Wellington, or indeed the wider questions of the psychological motivations of combat will find this book illuminating and thought-provoking.

White’s career in the British Army. It explores late Victorian military conflicts, British power dynamics in Africa and Asia, civil-military relations on the fringes of the empire, and networks of advancement in the army. White served in the Indian Rebellion and, twenty years later, the Second Anglo-Afghan War, where he earned the Victoria Cross. After serving in the Sudan campaign, White returned to India and held commands during the conquest and pacification of Upper Burma and the extension of British control over Balochistan, and, as Commander-in-Chief, sent expeditions to the North-West Frontier and oversaw major military reforms. Just before the start of the South African War, White was given the command of the Natal Field Force. This force was besieged in Ladysmith for 118 days. Relieved in 1900, White was heralded as the “Defender of Ladysmith.” He was made Field-Marshal in 1903.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A superb read . . . destined to become the go-to book for anyone interested in this long-neglected period of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars.” —The Napoleon Series To crush the French Revolution, the armies of the First Coalition gathered round France’s borders, the largest of which was assembled in Flanders. Composed of Anglo-Hanoverian, Dutch, Hessian, Prussian and Imperial Austrian troops, its aim was to invade France and restore the nobility to what was considered their rightful place. Opposing them was the French Armée du Nord. In command of the Anglo-Hanoverian contingent was the son of George III, the Duke of York. The campaign was a disaster for the Coalition forces, particularly during the severe winter of 1794/5 when the troops were forced into a terrible and humiliating retreat. Britain’s reputation and that of its military leaders was severely diminished, with the forces of the Revolution sweeping all before them on a tide of popularism. Yet, from this defeat grew an army that under the Duke of Wellington would eventually crush the Revolution’s greatest general, Napoleon Bonaparte. Of the Flanders Campaign, Wellington, who fought as a junior officer under the Duke of York, remarked that the experience had at least taught him what not to do. Napoleon Series research editor Steve Brown has produced one of the most insightful, and much-needed studies of this disastrous but intriguing campaign, with particular focus on the British Army’s contribution. With copious maps and nineteen appendices including detailed orders of battle, he concludes this important work with an analysis that draws striking, and significant comparisons with the Flanders campaigns of 1914 and 1940. How history repeats itself . . .

Book excerpt: A first-hand account of several engagements in the Peninsula after the advance from the Lines of Torres Vedras and pursuit of Masséna, and including the first siege of Badajoz, edited from the original manuscript and with an explanatory commentary and notes by an experienced author well acquainted with both the period and the scenes of action. Fills a gap in the history of the Innis killings, the years 1812 to 1814 only being covered in Charles Crowe's war Journals, recently published by Frontline Books as 'An Eloquent Soldier'. Describes the French flight from Waterloo and - rarely revealed before - the life of a young officer in a promiscuous Paris during the earlier weeks of the Occupation. Contains a number of contemporary illustrations not previously published.
