She was then eighteen, when Chactas, a warrior of a people in enmity with her country, was made prisoner. According to the custom of the nation, he was condemned to the most afflicting punishment. Atala beheld him, became enamoured of his person, snatched him from the pile, and fled with him among the deserts of Florida. Their foot-steps were traced by a dog, a species of blood-hound, who accompanied a benevolent priest upon his mission. Father Aubry, (such was his name) conducted the fugitives to his habitation, heard the recital of their adventures, felt himself equally interested in the fate of Chactas, though an idolater, as in that of Atala, and proposed to unite them in marriage. Atala, on leaving her native country, had provided herself with a mortal poison. This she swallowed, and, on the point of death, learned, with inconceivable anguish, that she might have been absolved from the oath. Chactas, driven to despair, dug, with his own hands, the tomb of his mistress. Her reliques were enveloped in a linen cloth, and accompanied by father Aubry, he carried the body to the cemetry of the Indians, under the arch of the Pont-naturel. It is considered one of the best productions of an artist, who, by his other works, has reflected honour on French sculpture. M. Lebreton, perpetual secretary of the fine arts in the Institute, delivered an admirable eulogium on the merits of this excellent statuary, who died in the month of December, 1804, in his seventy-fourth year. The limits of our publication not permitting us to report the whole of his discourse, we must confine ourselves to the following passage, which has a reference to the subject before us. "M. Julien had undertaken the statue of Poussin, but peculiar circumstances, far from exciting him to other labours, compelled him so slowly to execute this work, that he considered it as his last production. That which interests the reader to the left is the portrait of Epicurus, chief of a sect of philosophers, no less famous among the ancients than the moderns. They pretended that happiness consisted in voluptuousness; but this pleasure, in their opinion, was no other thing than virtue. We are not to reproach them for the eccentricities of some of their sectarists. Epicurus was laborious and frugal. He was born in a village of Attica, in the year 342 B. C. and died at the age of seventy-two, completely worn out by fatigue. He composed a variety of philosophical treatises, the most part of which are lost. It is from his works that Lucretius collected opinions which he decorated with all the charms of poetry. The adjoining head is that of Metrodorus. There were two personages of that name who enjoyed a degree of celebrity. One, a poet and philosopher, was sent by the Athenians to Paulus Emilius, who required an artist to represent his triumph over Persia, and a scholar to educate his children: the other, Metrodorus, was a physician of Chio, a disciple of Democritus, and master of Hippocrates - he lived about the year 444 B.
