Edmond Hotham had never been there, but he immediately began preparations to pursue the “wild life.” He met transcendentalist poet (William) Ellery Channing, a former close friend of Thoreau’s who had suggested to Thoreau that he build his cabin at Walden Pond. It was Channing who likely introduced Hotham to transcendentalist leader Ralph Waldo Emerson (the “Sage of Concord”), and Emerson who gave Hotham permission, like Thoreau before him, to build his “Earth-cabin” on the poet’s property at Walden Pond. Hotham built his shanty on the pond’s shore about 100 yards in front of Thoreau’s, where he attempted to out-economize and out-simplify Thoreau. Hotham’s sojourn as the second “hermit” at Walden Pond exemplified the growing adulation of Henry David Thoreau and his literary work. The Other “Hermit” of Thoreau’s Walden Pond is the first book-length treatise on Hotham, half of which is wholly new material. Paoli Troop 1’s route took them on what is today the Adirondack Ninety-mile Canoe Classic from Old Forge to Saranac Lake. This is also the first section of today’s Northern Forest Canoe Trail, considered the waterway equivalent of the Appalachian Trail, which extends via rivers, streams, lakes, and carries to Fort Kent, Maine. Three of the scouts, Herb “Hobey” Henderson, George Aman, and Bill McClear compiled the photo journal and dedicated it to future scouts who might read it. Hobey kept the log and the memories of the fifteen scouts’ experiences in a bureau drawer for decades, finally presenting it in 2011 to Paoli Troop 1 on its 100th anniversary. It seems somewhat of a miracle that Author William J. O’Hern discovered the journal, with the help of Dick and Hobey Henderson, and realized that its publication would be especially meaningful to those who enjoy canoeing and hiking in the same area today. Readers can only imagine how much the boys in the journal – now elderly men – enjoy reliving the adventure that was carefully preserved in words and photographs by their fellow scouts and now will be further preserved for later generations in this small publication.

Although architecture continually responds to ascetic compulsions, as in its frequent encounter with the question of excess and less, it is typically considered separate from asceticism. In contrast, this innovative book explores the rich and mutual ways in which asceticism and architecture are played out in each other’s practices. The question of asceticism is also considered—as neither a religious discourse nor a specific cultural tradition but as a perennial issue in the practice of culture. The work convincingly traces the influences from early Indian asceticism to Zen Buddhism to the Japanese teahouse—the latter opening the door to modern minimalism. As the book’s title suggests, the protagonist of the narrative is the nondescript hermit’s hut.
