Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Herald of the Cross, Vol. 2: January, 1906 When the story was found in the room where the Brotherhood were wont to meet, and where it had been unguardedly left by one of the Brethren, he who found it hid the copy beneath the ags which composed the oor, until the incident of its loss had been forgotten and then he took it home with him. He was of those who had joined the Brotherhood in order to secure if possible some of the inner meanings of the Celestial Mysteries. He was not the Betrayer, but of near kindred. He it was who caused the Brotherhood to dissolve through his mis representations. But of these we may not now speak. What we desire to impress upon those souls to whom the sublime story of the Angelic Vision was given when they dwelt upon the Spiritual Kingdom is this, that the details were of a Celestial nature such as souls who had dwelt upon that Kingdom could alone understand. These details may not all be now given. But we record the greater part of the story in our Bible reading with which we preface this article. May that story find its true response in the souls of all those who read this! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Herald of the Cross, 1911, Vol. 7 And what Shall we write concerning His wonderful Sayings which fell upon our ears as messages from the Eternal and ever Blessed One, Sayings full of the profoundest meanings for the Soul In the light of all that happened to these Teachings, the view which the various Schools now take of them and present to the multitudes, the woeful results of the ignorance of the people and the darkness of their teachers so obviously made manifest in the state of the entire religious world where His name is confessed, it is not easy to express what we feel, how very sad it all seems, how very real and how very great the tragedy has been. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Herald of the Cross, Vol. 1: December, 1905 These wonderful songs, many of them inspired from the Spiritual Spheres, tell to the seer who knows from the Divine, all the history of the soul, how it is yearning for the realisation of its own truest life, even whilst it is living in a body whose mode of existence is a constant contradiction of its noblest aspirations. TO him there is nothing hidden which relates to that soul's history. He sees and knows from the Divine. And he can see how the soul reaches upwards toward the true kingdom of its nature - a kingdom which is not Of this world, even as the Christ's kingdom was not of this world. He sees the soul struggling against all its adverse conditions to find an outlet for itself in which it will be able to realise some Of its noblest feelings and purposes. He knows how hard it is for it to now rise up out of these adverse conditions. He knows how great the struggle is between the soul and its false manner of life in the body, how it longs to conquer the body with all its desires which are born of the flesh, and the mind of matter which dominates that body. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Herald of the Cross, Vol. 1: April, 1905 It is this spirit in man which prevents him from dis cerning his own true dignity of soul, and teaches him to seek only those things which seem to bring to him reward of some kind. It is this zeitgeist in him that makes him a mere puppet of the material influences which are in operation all around him, that makes him the absolute slave of the senses, that prevents him from rising to the height of his manhood, and that shuts the door of the higher spiritual world to his soul. It is the spirit of mam mon, the god of matter, the negation of all spiritual good, the outer phenomena of the world - the same terrible influence that led the whole planet astray ages ago, and made it polarise on the outermost planes of mere existence beyond the benign influences of the Divine operation, so that many of its splendid spiritual forces were converted to fixed and adamant conditions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Herald of the Cross, Vol. 1: June, 1905 Now the soul is always in darkness where the desire of the flesh prevails, so it is said that the children of Israel were sorely afflicted by the task-masters of Egypt tae bodily senses. When it is said that they cried unto the Lord by reason of their oppression, it is meant that the soul was seeking for liberty from its captivity to the senses. And when the Lord heard their cry. And sent to them the Messenger Moses, the time had arrived for a new cycle in the planet to begin. That was the introduction of the Passover, as it has come to be known by that name. Prior to the time of Moses it was known as the pass ing of the soul from the hall of death to the King's chamber of light. That was how the early Egyptians spoke of it. And before Moses was born the Egyptians had lost the meaning of this event in the history of the soul. But when he is said to have been called to deliver Israel, it means that that lost knowledge was to be again restored to the race. The mere localisation of the his tory was an event ages after Moses had passed away from the earth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Herald of the Cross, Vol. 1: November, 1905 Christhood as recorded in such passages of St. John as were not tampered with. For when the Church succeeded in circulating such a picture as is to be found in the occult record from which the synoptics were built up, as to the life and work of Jesus, the Brotherhood felt that, whilst they must sacredly guard the innermost sense of the Mysteries, yet it might be well to tell such parts as would give to the people a truer view of the Christhood. And it was this desire which led St. John to write the Logia of Jesus. The Acts of Jesus by St. Matthew had been so misunderstood and perverted that St. John felt the necessity for giving a spiritual picture. That drawn by St. Matthew was Jesus the Christ; that presented by St. John was the Celestial Christ. The two were a brief likeness of the Divine Master. N ow, when the Church saw that the Brotherhood were determined not to divulge the inner sense of the Sacred Mystery of the Christhood, but to preserve it inviolate, the Church commenced to persecute the Brethren. It was under the leadership of him who had betrayed the Christ to the Jews, and who had prepared them to lay hold of Him, and have Him condemned to death. For, as we said in a previous issue, he was the instigator of the Church being reared in opposition to the Brotherhood. And he took care that there should not be left one stone unturned by which he might destroy that Brotherhood. For in his heart he always hated the Brethren because of their love and devotion to the Master. And he specially hated the Brethren who had been most intimate with Him. And when he saw that the Church could not destroy the in uence of the Brotherhood, he set to work in the direction of the false picture of the life and teaching of Jesus. And, as the result of his endeavours, there was compiled the strange story as told in the occult record. And when he had succeeded in doing this, the Brethren felt that the time had arrived for them to act. And, in later years, when the Brotherhood had dissolved, he succeeded in betraying one of them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Herald of the Cross, 1907, Vol. 3 The day has also come when those who have made their dwelling amid the graves of the City of Jerusalem, should again hear the Voice of the Divine, and come forth unto newness of Life. They must hear His voice break upon their ears whom they knew as the Redeemer, even as of one who has been sent forth to purify the House of Levi. They must learn that the Divine Love knows them all by name, and calls them by it. They must learn that, when He calls, they should make ready to enter into the King dom. They must learn that to refuse to enter that Kingdom will mean for them to choose to remain as one of the dwellers amid the graves. They must assuredly know that to so remain amid these graves, is to choose the path whose ending is death to the Soul. They must learn from their own sad history which we are about to restore unto them, What Spiritual Death means. They have known the meaning of Divine Life, and so have often sought during the long ages of their captivity, to find it again. They have known the meaning of oppression at the hands of both the Egyptian and the Assyrian - the body with its passions, and the mind of that body with its false ambitions. They have long mourned in captivity because they were unable to find the life they sought. They have for ages and ages been languishing for those Streams of Life which they once knew, and that Bread of Life which was once their strength. They have many a time cried out.for both bread and water for their Soul, when they were dwellers amid the arid land of the desert. They have many a time yearned and even cried out for the Redeemer to come and deliver them from their sad estate. They have often looked for that Redeemer amid the false lights kindled from the kingdom of the enemy. They have often mistaken these lights for the true signs of the coming of the Redeemer, and, through following them, have again been deceived. They have many a time been ensnared by these false lights, into the same conditions as those from which they sought to escape. They have frequently followed mere mirages, until they have found themselves even amid the streams of Babylon. They have often been held in bondage by these streams, until their very Soul languished in unspeakable sorrow. They have thus Spent the long ages of their captivity.
