D. 1672 to A. D. 1812 The period at which the Elsdon Registers begin marks an epoch in the history of an interesting and picturesque people. The men of Redesdale, sturdy sons of a long line of sturdy sires, had hitherto occupied a position in every way unique, and borne a character which marked them off from all their contemporaries. Looking back to the period at which their story begins - a story which runs concurrently with and yet in strange independence of that of their country - and following them in all their varied fortunes, we see them ever a people separate and distinct, Ishmaelites indeed, their hand against every man, and every man's hand against them. Holding little or no intercourse with their neighbours, except in the way of relieving them of their "kye and sheep," varied occasionally by the carrying away of their "insight gear;" strong in their upland fastnesses to withstand the attempts of Norman and Saxon alike to dispossess them of their own; ordering the affairs of their freeholds, and ruling their dependents in accordance with the customs and traditions of the ancient tribal system which belonged to them as the lineal descendants of the Celt; what wonder that, so situated and so environed, they should stand forth as we see them throughout the middle ages, fearless, hot-blooded, quick to avenge a real or supposed wrong, a terror to their more peace-loving neighbours. And when, added to this, we call to mind the fact that, during the long unsettled period preceding the Union, they had been alternately tolerated and harassed by the State, as they were found useful or otherwise in carrying on the Border wars, it would be surprising if we found the wrong-doing of their later days one whit behind that of the earlier, either in enormity of character or frequency of occurrence. The late Canon Raine, in his Introduction to the York Depositions (40 Surt. soc. publ.), graphically and succinctly describes the state of things at this time. "It was not from Scotland only that the moss-troopers made their depredations. An English commander, in a despatch written at the close of the 16th century, declared that there was more plundering and bloodshed by English thieves than by all the Scots in Scotland. And so it was. Every village had its party of thieves; every family had its own feuds and wrongs to avenge. No one could go to rest with the certainty of finding his cattle in the fold when he arose in the morning. The effects of such a system were most disastrous. Agriculture was necessarily neglected. Refinement there was none, and all the gentler arts were uncultivated and unknown. The husbandman tilled his fields with his arms by his side, meditating perhaps, all the while, a descent upon some neighbouring herd, - "Armati terrain exercent, semperque recentes Convectare juvat praedes, et viveie rapto." Dark and sombre indeed is this page of their history; and yet, withal, so fall is it of all that appeals to the imagination and awakens the interest that it is impossible to dismiss it without sharing in some sort the feeling so touchingly and sympathetically expressed by the poet: - "Sweet Redesdale, thro' thy winding glens No more shall hostile tumult roar; Wi' note forlorn the bugle horn Shall echo from thy hills no more. No more shall ruthless flames devour The trembling shepherd's lowly shiel: Nor fierce moss-trooper burst the door That strongly bars the shelt'ring peel."
