Book excerpt: What has happened has seized upon us as upon its prey. During the first months of the war, during the first years perhaps, all our physical and moral energies were overwhelmed in this maelstrom. How, indeed, could one refuse oneself to the appetite of the monster? We did not even try to snatch from him our hours of leisure, our dreams. We simply abandoned such things, as we abandoned our plans, our welfare, and the whole of our existence. You remember! It was a time when solitude found us more shaken, more disarmed, than peril. We reproached ourselves for distracting a single one of our thoughts from the universal distress. We gave ourselves day and night to this agonizing world; and when our work was suspended, when the wild beast unloosed its clutch, as if in play, and we returned for a few minutes to ourselves, we did not always dare to look the quivering inner flame in the face.

Book excerpt: This monograph seeks to determine if the moral detrain of battle for guerrilla soldiers is different from that of conventional soldiers. The works of classical and contemporary military theorists address various factors that impact on the moral domain of battle for the individual soldier. These works discuss the moral domain almost exclusively from the perspective of conventional soldiers. As the United States faces the challenges of the post-Cold War world, the likelihood of military intervention in conflicts involving guerrilla warfare may increase, if established moral domain theory does not apply to guerrilla warfare then new paradigms addressing the guerrilla merit investigation. Understanding what motivates the guerrilla soldier in combat will assist the U.S. Army in the development of tactics, techniques and procedures to defeat guerilla movements. This study focuses on rural-based guerrillas in combat at the tactical level of war. The evidence includes a review of theory on the moral domain and case studies on the guerrilla forces of the Yugoslavian Partisans (1941-44) and the Viet Cong (1960-75). Classical and contemporary theories describing the moral domain of conventional soldiers provide a base line for comparisons with guerrilla fighters. The monograph employs Anthony Kellett’s “factors affecting combat motivation” as criteria in a comparative analysis of the guerrilla’s moral domain. Those factors are: importance of the primary group; unit esprit; manpower allocation; socialization; training; discipline; leadership; ideology; rewards; preconceptions of combat; aspects of combat; combat stress; and combat behavior. The monograph concludes that Kellett’s factors and much of the classical moral domain theory do apply to the guerrilla. However, while the basic construct is applicable, the nature of some factors is significantly different. The Monograph explores these differences and their implications for counterguerrilla doctrine.

Book excerpt: Solve complex business problems by understanding users better, finding the right problem to solve, and building lean event-driven systems to give your customers what they really want Key FeaturesApply DDD principles using modern tools such as EventStorming, Event Sourcing, and CQRSLearn how DDD applies directly to various architectural styles such as REST, reactive systems, and microservicesEmpower teams to work flexibly with improved services and decoupled interactionsBook Description Developers across the world are rapidly adopting DDD principles to deliver powerful results when writing software that deals with complex business requirements. This book will guide you in involving business stakeholders when choosing the software you are planning to build for them. By figuring out the temporal nature of behavior-driven domain models, you will be able to build leaner, more agile, and modular systems. You'll begin by uncovering domain complexity and learn how to capture the behavioral aspects of the domain language. You will then learn about EventStorming and advance to creating a new project in .NET Core 2.1; you'll also and write some code to transfer your events from sticky notes to C#. The book will show you how to use aggregates to handle commands and produce events. As you progress, you'll get to grips with Bounded Contexts, Context Map, Event Sourcing, and CQRS. After translating domain models into executable C# code, you will create a frontend for your application using Vue.js. In addition to this, you'll learn how to refactor your code and cover event versioning and migration essentials. By the end of this DDD book, you will have gained the confidence to implement the DDD approach in your organization and be able to explore new techniques that complement what you've learned from the book. What you will learnDiscover and resolve domain complexity together with business stakeholdersAvoid common pitfalls when creating the domain modelStudy the concept of Bounded Context and aggregateDesign and build temporal models based on behavior and not only dataExplore benefits and drawbacks of Event SourcingGet acquainted with CQRS and to-the-point read models with projectionsPractice building one-way flow UI with Vue.jsUnderstand how a task-based UI conforms to DDD principlesWho this book is for This book is for .NET developers who have an intermediate level understanding of C#, and for those who seek to deliver value, not just write code. Intermediate level of competence in JavaScript will be helpful to follow the UI chapters.

Book excerpt: Vaughn Vernon presents concrete and realistic domain-driven design (DDD) techniques through examples from familiar domains, such as a Scrum-based project management application that integrates with a collaboration suite and security provider. Each principle is backed up by realistic Java examples, and all content is tied together by a single case study of a company charged with delivering a set of advanced software systems with DDD.

Book excerpt: This textbook provides a basis for a PhD course on domain-theoretic semantics of functional programming languages and their meta-mathematical properties. It introduces basic domain theory and the technique of logical relations as developed by Scott and Plotkin. The solution of recursive domain equations is explained in detail.A complete discussion of the famous full abstraction problem for PCF (a functional Kernel language due to Scott and Plotkin) is given including a construction of the fully abstract Milner model using Kripke logical relations.A final chapter introduces computability in Scott domains and shows that this model is fully abstract and universal for appropriate extensions of PCF by parallel language constructs.
