Book Synopsis Follow the Spring North - Land's End to John O'groats by : Christine Roche
Download or read book Follow the Spring North - Land's End to John O'groats written by Christine Roche and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2004-12-09 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written from the pages of the diary kept by the author on her walk, the diary being written every night or perhaps the next day while all the experiences were fresh in her mind. You can read it and "live the walk" as you do so. Following the spring north meant enjoying the sight of each new spring flower and sight or sound of birds as the journey continued northward through ever changing landscape. Although a stress fracture to the neck of the femur delayed the completion of the walk until the following spring, this did not seem to break the continuous nature of the journey; "It's still there - Keep smiling!" kept her looking forward to the next stage of the walk. She met some delightful people on the walk, enjoyed the company of some good friends for parts of it and enjoyed the "bliss of solitude" for much of it, appreciating being alone in wild places but not lonely. Having walked and enjoyed the scenery from the south of Cornwall to the north of Scotland, she was sorry to finish.
Book Synopsis A Wiggly Way Through England by : Richard Guise
Download or read book A Wiggly Way Through England written by Richard Guise and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Guise follows a unique 450-mile route across England on foot and on his trusty bike Tetley. His guide is the wiggly line that divides rivers flowing west from those flowing east, a choice that takes him over rolling downlands, along windy ridges, through remote villages, across ancient battlefields, past abandoned airfields and even -- surprisingly -- by boat through a network of canal tunnels that echo to the sound of cannon fire. Accompanying or accommodating him on parts of this serendipitous journey are an array of locals with their own stories to tell: the quail-raising smallholder, the bumptious yachtsman, cake fans, ferret fanciers, re-writers of history and more. The route itself turns out to have historical significance and Guise roots out odd tales of passion and heroism, vision and fear, drunkenness, conceit, deceit and murder.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain is blessed with remarkable scenery and a wealth of history, and there is no better way to explore it than on foot. Although long distance walking is easy for the young and fit, for others it may not be so. This is a story of how a group of walkers, the majority of whom were in their seventh decade, walked from Hampshire to Iona, and what they discovered about this spectacular island along the way. The book is lavishly illustrated with photographs, most of which were taken during the walk. The walk was accomplished over one week in May every year for 5 years. Timings and routes are detailed and both the human and natural history of the places visited is explored. Starting in Hampshire, the walkers headed northwest, along the Thames, through the Cotswolds and into the Midlands. Then they followed the Pennines through the Peak District, Yorkshire Dales and the Northumbrian hinterland. From Lindisfarne the walkers headed to Scotland, traversing in turn the Borders, Southern Uplands, Glasgow, Western Highlands and over to Iona via Mull. All were amazed at how much ground could be covered and all returned with a much deeper understanding of Britain than when they had

Book Synopsis Lost Battlefields of Britain by : Martin Hackett
Download or read book Lost Battlefields of Britain written by Martin Hackett and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2005-10-20 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Isles have witnessed hundreds of battles, both great and small, in their two thousand years of recorded history, but not all are widely remembered today. Many of these battles are well known, due to their far-reaching consequences, their sheer scale or the involvement of famous protagonists. Even so, many battles have never been properly investigated, perhaps because their importance was never understood or because they have never been included in previous books on British battlefields. In this book, Martin Hackett examines ten forgotten British battles, covering the length and breadth of Britain and some 900 years of warfare. For each, he provides a concise account of the battle itself and analyses its military, archaeological and political significance. Each entry is accompanied by current photographs of the location, a modern map of the battlefield with suggested tours and information on exploring the site today.
