Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heart of Christianity Some devout Christian scholars who have read this book in manuscript, have sug gested that I ought to have qualified, more fully, its leading propositions. For example, in the teaching that the Holy Spirit is the guide of the Christian, it is suggested that, I lay myself open to the suspicion that I undervalue the Church and the Bible, or at least, that I see antagonism between the Holy Spirit on the one hand, and the Church and the Bible on the other. As to the latter, I am well satisfied that there can be no antagonism or contradiction between the truth of the Bible' and the lead ings of the Holy Spirit. The one must harmonize with the other. God can never contradict Himself although sometimes He may appear to do so. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jesus, the Heart of Christianity Among these, through whom the imperishable life of the infinite God is breathed into our race, and high above all is he from whom Christen dom sprang. This claim which we make for him may well seem questionable if measured by the extent to which his in uence has spread over the globe. The religion of Buddha, it is computed, is the religion of four hundred millions of human be ings. So far then as numbers are concerned, Christendom must yield to the religion of Asia, and Christ to Buddha. They are not theological or liter ary, but practical. They were spoken in the first place to the young men and women of the North field Conferences in the summertimes. They present simply and earnestly some personal aspects of Christian truth. They were reported at the time and are printed here in almost their original colloquial form, in the h0pe that in some life they may make a larger place for our Lord and Master, Jesus Christ. Their only merit is their effort to exalt Him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1976, Paul Johnson’s exceptional study of Christianity has been loved and widely hailed for its intensive research, writing, and magnitude—“a tour de force, one of the most ambitious surveys of the history of Christianity ever attempted and perhaps the most radical” (New York Review of Books). In a highly readable companion to books on faith and history, the scholar and author Johnson has illuminated the Christian world and its fascinating history in a way that no other has. Johnson takes off in the year AD 49 with his namesake the apostle Paul. Thus beginning an ambitious quest to paint the centuries since the founding of a little-known ‘Jesus Sect’, A History of Christianity explores to a great degree the evolution of the Western world. With an unbiased and overall optimistic tone, Johnson traces the fantastic scope of the consequent sects of Christianity and the people who followed them. Information drawn from extensive and varied sources from around the world makes this history as credible as it is reliable. Invaluable understanding of the framework of modern Christianity—and its trials and tribulations throughout history—has never before been contained in such a captivating work.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fourth Gospel: The Heart of Christ "The fourth Gospel is the Heart of Christ," is the euthusiastic language of Ernesti, from whom we borrow the words of our title-page. Expositors both ancient and modern, who regard the four Gospels as veritable history, have generally manifested the same preference. "Written by the hand of an angel," says Herder; and Schleiermacher, who with his school delighted in "the mystic of the four Evangelists," says that his soul must have been pervaded by eternal childlike Christmas joys. But sentiments of admiration are not evidence to other minds who do not find through John those depths of living water which those who are more contemplative have ever found. No book has been the subject of a more searching or a more adverse criticism than the fourth Gospel. The history of the controversy, with the motives of it, is exceedingly interesting and instructive, and I had sketched it in two chapters of this work, but was obliged to omit them in order to bring the volume within convenient size. It is the controversy of half a century between some of the ablest theologians and profoundest scholars. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Workings of an English Jewish Christian Heart There is an almost universal opinion, honestly entertained by the Jews, that no one of the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob truly believes in Jesus as the Son of God, the promised Messiah. In my boyhood, youth, and early manhood, this idea was firmly fixed in my mind; and, whilst possessing a kindly feeling for almost everyone, a very tidal wave of loathing would surge through my heart toward a Jewish convert to Christianity, submerging in its overflow or repulsion the noble feeling of tolerance, the only beacon in the passion-tossed sea of human nature to warn us where to steer clear of the cruel rocks of bigotry, off the sullen coast of religious fanaticism, upon which so many of God's children have been wrecked, but whereon the love-light of mercy never shines. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heart Talks on Holiness is a text focused on religion and spirituality which essentially stands as a sequel to S. L. Brengle's book "Helps to Holiness." In addition to her work as a renowned and prolific author, Brengle was also a well known commissioner in the Salvation Army. As a preacher and spiritual guide on the doctrine of Holiness, Brengle made it her life's work to write and publish works focused on that which she devoted her life to: the love and worship of God. This book presents itself as a spiritual guide for individuals who already believe in Christianity but want assistance in focusing and promoting their faith. Brengle believes deeply in salvation and the grace of God and she crafted this book with the goal of helping men and women achieve salvation. A tall order in some regards, Brengle's main objective is that all readers will be inspired to enjoy salvation and through that, experience happiness and joy on Earth. Brengle uses this book to explain to readers the basics of Holiness, several religious tenets, how to study and understand the bible, and the value in embracing spiritual power. Heart Talks on Holiness is a spiritually themed book with a primary focus on Christianity and the religious concepts of Holiness and salvation. Brengle's passion for the topic flows through each page and each chapter - compelling the reader to read forward and absorb excitement from the text. This book is a great read for individuals inspired by spirituality and Christianity along with students of religion. This book would also be entertaining for Bible study groups, and Christian organizations interested in the work of S. L. Brengle.
