Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents Canadian trends in youth health attitudes and behaviours, based on World Health Organization collaborative cross-national surveys conducted in 1989-90, 1993-94, and 1997-98. The introduction describes the survey sample and methodology. The rest of the report is organized around broad themes that are part of the population health approach used in the survey. Chapters 2-4 consider the social determinants of youth health: the school, the home, and the peer group. They illustrate the importance of positive relationships to both physical & mental health. Chapter 5 introduces factors that enable young people to cope with the strains of adolescence, such as high self-esteem, as well as noting the problems that arise when effective coping skills are not present. Chapter 6 deals with general health concerns and is followed by four chapters that present findings on behavioural risks: eating patterns & dental care, physical & leisure activity, injuries, and substance use. The final chapter discusses the implications of the findings for health programs & policies.

Book excerpt: Using a population health approach, this report compiles existing research to explain how the various determinants of health interact to shape healthy child development, and to depict conditions & trends relevant to the health & well-being of children & youth in Canada. The introduction provides useful background information, including basic demographic data on Canadian children & youth, an overview of the population health approach and the determinants of health, and a general description of the process of child development. The body of the report contains 11 chapters, each examining a specific determinant of health, addressing its relationship to healthy child development, summarizing current conditions & trends relevant to that determinant, and identifying how it relates to other determinants of healthy child development. The final chapter takes a broader view of the areas of concern identified in each chapter, compiling some of the key findings about the determinants of health to identify issues, opportunities, and priorities for inter-sectoral collaboration and decision-making that will improve the health & future prospects for Canada's children & youth.

Book excerpt: The sociology of childhood and youth has sparked international interest in recent years, and yet a reader highlighting Canadian work in this field has been long overdue. Filling this gap in the literature, The Sociology of Childhood and Youth in Canada brings together cutting-edge Canadian scholarship in this important and growing discipline. Thought-provoking and timely, this edited collection explores a breadth of essential topics, including research on and with children and youth, the social construction of childhood and youth, intersecting identities, and citizenship, rights, and social engagement. With a focus on social justice, the contributing authors critically examine various sites of inequality in the lives of children and young people, such as gender, sexuality, colonialism, race, class, and disability. Encouraging further development of Canadian scholarship in the sociology of childhood and youth, this unique collection ensures that young people’s voices are heard by involving them in the research process. Pedagogical supports—including learning objectives, study questions, suggested research assignments, and a comprehensive glossary—make this volume an invaluable resource for students of childhood and youth studies in Canada.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this essential third edition, Vappu Tyyskä examines the challenges faced by today's young people through a critical lens. Difficult questions related to such issues as employment, education, social pressure, identity, and crime are explored by Tyyskä as she paints a fascinating picture of modern youth in three countries: Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. The author explores the negative stereotypes surrounding young people, and argues that it is time to contextualize our understanding of youth by addressing the underlying social, economic, and political issues they face. Each of the ten revised chapters begins with a list of key learning objectives and ends with discussion questions to aid in the learning process and stimulate critical thinking. This new edition incorporates updated statistics, comprehensive tables, and revised narratives in which the author explores topics pertinent to today's youth such as the influence of social media, eating disorders, and recent changes to the juvenile justice system.

This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Young adulthood - ages approximately 18 to 26 - is a critical period of development with long-lasting implications for a person's economic security, health and well-being. Young adults are key contributors to the nation's workforce and military services and, since many are parents, to the healthy development of the next generation. Although 'millennials' have received attention in the popular media in recent years, young adults are too rarely treated as a distinct population in policy, programs, and research. Instead, they are often grouped with adolescents or, more often, with all adults. Currently, the nation is experiencing economic restructuring, widening inequality, a rapidly rising ratio of older adults, and an increasingly diverse population. The possible transformative effects of these features make focus on young adults especially important. A systematic approach to understanding and responding to the unique circumstances and needs of today's young adults can help to pave the way to a more productive and equitable tomorrow for young adults in particular and our society at large. Investing in The Health and Well-Being of Young Adults describes what is meant by the term young adulthood, who young adults are, what they are doing, and what they need. This study recommends actions that nonprofit programs and federal, state, and local agencies can take to help young adults make a successful transition from adolescence to adulthood. According to this report, young adults should be considered as a separate group from adolescents and older adults. Investing in The Health and Well-Being of Young Adults makes the case that increased efforts to improve high school and college graduate rates and education and workforce development systems that are more closely tied to high-demand economic sectors will help this age group achieve greater opportunity and success. The report also discusses the health status of young adults and makes recommendations to develop evidence-based practices for young adults for medical and behavioral health, including preventions. What happens during the young adult years has profound implications for the rest of the life course, and the stability and progress of society at large depends on how any cohort of young adults fares as a whole. Investing in The Health and Well-Being of Young Adults will provide a roadmap to improving outcomes for this age group as they transition from adolescence to adulthood.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on the latest research and statistics, Population Health in Canada presents critical analyses of the most pressing population health equity issues in Canada. Comprising research papers and briefs written by some of the top scholars in the field, this edited collection illustrates fundamental concepts of population health, including social inclusion and exclusion, health as a public good, and the social determinants of health. The editors’ careful selection of the framework and contents has been designed to encourage a social justice lens to address health inequities that are systemic, socially produced, and unfair. Sections on methodological tools, population health equity, community action, and current issues introduce students to the components needed to understand population health in Canada. With an emphasis on theory, methods, interventions, policy, and knowledge translation, this timely volume is well suited to a variety of courses on population health in social science and health studies programs.
