Book Synopsis The Role and Practice of Aboriginal Health Workers in the Great Southern and South West Regions of Western Australia by : Naomi Gail Smith
Download or read book The Role and Practice of Aboriginal Health Workers in the Great Southern and South West Regions of Western Australia written by Naomi Gail Smith and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information collected during the interviews and focus group discussions revealed that Aboriginal health workers undertook a range of work activities and performed a number of different roles. They hold a holistic view of health and were committed to providing culturally appropriate primary health care services to the Aboriginal people. The study found that Aboriginal health workers in the Great Southern and South West regions received different amounts of orientation and training to become qualified. Many health workers believed that they received little or no recognition of their formal qualifications from management, health personnel or government, and that there was confusion about their classifications and pay levels relevant to their positions. Most health workers believed the regulations governing their organisations were in conflict with the holistic health services that they strive to deliver, and some believed that restrictive financial constraints on their organisation hindered them from providing effective services. Finally, the general feeling amongst health workers was that they needed more support from managers in all areas of their work. The concerns expressed by Aboriginal health workers who took part in this study were further demonstrated by the number of resignations that occurred during the two year period in which the research was undertaken.provide non-t.

Book excerpt: From its beginnings in the early 1970s, the Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia has been influential in national campaigns to address the legacies of dispossession and human rights abuses. It continues to play a central role in advocating for measures to address Aboriginal deaths in custody, land rights and stolen generations, not just in WA but as issues of national significance. A lively and multi-dimensional account, Justice: A History of the Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia shows the human face of some of the nations major social, political and legal reforms of the last four decades. It is the story of people determined to protect and defend the human rights of those Australians whose rights have been routinely abused.

Book Synopsis Globalization and the Health of Indigenous Peoples by : Ahsan Ullah
Download or read book Globalization and the Health of Indigenous Peoples written by Ahsan Ullah and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-11-18 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 70 countries worldwide, there is an estimated 370 million indigenous peoples, and their rich diversity of cultures, religions, traditions, languages and histories has been significant source of our scholarships. However, the health status of this population group is far below than that of non-indigenous populations by all standards. Could the persisting reluctance to understand the influence of self-governance, globalization and social determinants of health in the lives of these people be deemed as a contributor to the poor health of indigenous peoples? Within this volume, Ullah explores the gap in health status between indigenous and non-indigenous peoples by providing a comparative assessment of socio-economic and health indicators for indigenous peoples, government policies, and the ways in which indigenous peoples have been resisting and adapting to state policies. A timely book for a growing field of study, Globalization and the Health of Indigenous Peoples is a must read for academics, policy-makers, and practitioners who are interested in indigenous studies and in understanding the role that globalization plays for the improvement of indigenous peoples’ health across the world.
