Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Harvard Theological Review, 1920, Vol. 13: Issued Quarterly Crawford's mother, Amelia Ann Rogers, was the grand daughter Oi a Revolutionary Officer, named Stanhope. The Stanhope family are said to have settled in Virginia about the beginning of the eighteenth century. Crawford Howell Toy, the first of nine children, four sons and five daughters, was born at Norfolk on the 23d Of March, 1836, and died in Cambridge, Mass., on the 12th of May, 1919. He came, as we have seen, of excel lent stock, was inheritor of the best traditions in regard to learning, enjoyed rare opportunities for education, and was endowed with the ability and the will to make the most of these. Like his father, he was slight of figure, but not frail, as appears from his fondness for mountain climbing and from his power to endure long and arduous study. Crawford received his elementary training at the Nor folk Academy, which at the time was organized on the military basis. He was captain of one of the companies. On his graduation he received from the school a copy Of the works of Shakespeare for excellence. In 1852, at the age of sixteen, he entered the University Of Virginia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Harvard Theological Review, Vol. 12 The Harvard Theological Review has been partially endowed by a bequest of the late Miss Mildred Everett, "for the establishment and maintenance of an undenominational theological review, to be edited under the direction of the Faculty of the Divinity School of Harvard University. ... I make this provision in order to carry out a plan suggested by my late father, the Rev. Charles Carroll Everett." During the continuance of The New World, Dr. Everett was on its editorial board, and many of his essays, now collected in the volume entitled Essays, Theological and Literary, appeared first in its pages. Sharing his belief in the value of such a theological review, and in devotion to his honored memory, the Faculty of the Harvard Divinity School, of which he was a member from 1869, and its Dean from 1878 until his death in 1900, has accepted the trust, and will strive to make the Review a worthy memorial of his comprehensive thought and catholic spirit. The Review is edited by a committee of the Faculty of the Harvard Divinity School, consisting of Professors William W. Fenn, Henry W. Foote and Frederic Palmer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Harvard Theological Review, Vol. 11 On the speculative side he entered an earnest protest against anti-rationalism on the one hand and ultra rationalism on the other. He mediated between the two, not, like so many mediators, by suggesting a wretched compromise in which what is good in each extreme has been sacrificed to a hollow agreement. He indicated a real synthesis in which both were conserved, and the outcome of his influence was to give English theology a direction which it has never since lost. The position is taken with reference to religion that no one, either of the East or West, can claim to possess an all-round education until accurate knowledge of the his tory, claims, and content of Christianity, the religion of the greatest nations of the world, is obtained. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theological Review, Vol. 2: A Journal of Religious Thought and Life Not only was the Reformation a living thing in France, but it had increased to such an extent as to be no longer able to conceal itself. A fourth part of the kingdom is Huguenot, wrote l'hopital to the Pope the nuncio Prosper de St. Croix went farther, and said, one half. Hitherto worship had only been celebrated in secret, often during the night, in woods and remote places; but from the year 1560, it began to be solemnized in public. The fury of the Guises burst forth at this innovation; orders were issued by them, that the country should be cleared of the multi tude of rabble who lived in the Genevese fashion In some parts, the Huguenots even destroyed the images and the altars in the churches of which they had taken pos session for their own meetings.
