Huck's "best friend" thinks that Huck should just get over it, the girl he likes won't give him the time of day, and his mom now works all hours at a roadside diner to make ends meet. The only thing that still makes sense for Huck is the game his dad taught him, the game they spent hours playing together: Texas hold'em. Worse than all of that, though, is Huck's math teacher, Mr. Abbott -- a hungry card shark with an ego to match his appetite. He now wears the local poker tournament's first prize, a silver watch that Huck's dad wore proudly for three years. So Huck hatches a plan to knock Abbott off his throne and win back the watch. Only, bluffing his way into the tournament will mean lying to everyone Huck knows. But as Huck gets deeper in the tournament and starts to lose himself in the cards, he begins to wonder who he'll be when the last hand is played. Raw and gritty, Paul Volponi's novel about grief, family, and poker is an adrenaline rush that starts with a bang and doesn't let up until the final page is turned. A coming-of-age story set at a card table, The Hand You're Dealt will leave readers wondering what they would risk in a game.

Or better yet, have you ever thought you got the worst possible combination of cards possible! Me too! At times, life seems unfair, unequal, and not so unequivocal. Of all life's challenges, growing up without a father had to be the hardest card for me to deal with, but not impossible to conquer. In "Dealing with the Hand I Was Dealt", Brandy Hunt reveals how she struggled through life chasing one man after another looking for the love of her Father. She explains how a life without direction or identity leads to destruction. Her life was a complete disaster. Life dealt her one final blow that knocked her to her knees. That one moment changed her life, forever. "Dealing with the Hand I Was Dealt" is a blueprint for conquering the challenges of life through faith and patience in order to receive the blessings that God has for all of us. God gently reminds us, that the hand we were dealt didn't just come with pain, but also victory. However, we must go through the pain, to experience the victory. Jerimiah 29:11 so eloquently reminds us "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh new voice in fiction, Nikki Jenkins's novel imagines the life of a woman who experiences the best and worst of everyone around her -- and tries to redeem every relationship she has, no matter how crazy and convoluted they become. Natalie Kelley's world is in danger of falling apart, and she is the only one who can keep that from happening. Her husband, Anderson -- who has an undeniable history of adultery -- is once again preoccupied with something other than work. And that's not all. Natalie has to deal with her own spoiled mother, drug-addicted sister, man-crazy best friend, and her own children who are too young to take care of themselves. Natalie goes through three days of her life, desperately clinging to the only life she knows and supporting everyone who relies on her, all at once. Her husband's actions verge on the edge of abusive, and it is only a matter of time before Natalie discovers what has been drawing him further away from their love -- and the results will shock everyone. Her struggles are contrasted with flashbacks that help make sense of the present, showing her relationships as they had been, and as they might yet become again. Through it all, Natalie strives to be available for everyone, but is even her indomitable spirit up to the task? Playing With the Hand I Was Dealt is an insightful debut about a woman's attempts to redefine "normal" in a life gone mad.

Book excerpt: Essential tremor (ET) is a common movement disorder. It affects about four out of one-hundred people. Many of us have it but never seek treatment. Sadly, ET robs a person, stealing away, sometimes slowly and other times quickly, skill-based physical pleasures. For Greg, it first took his ability to fish, one of his great joys. Then it took his ability to hold a job. This is a hopeful, and helpful, book. We tremble. We, tremblers, need help with some day-to-day tasks. However, when we decide to retake control of our lives we discover new joys. Greg lost fishing but picked up gardening. Because people with essential tremors have other issues, we decided to add a chapter for each of the common issues with some helpful tips. If you tremble and have stress, anxiety, sleep problems, tinnitus, depression, or dizziness, this book is for you. If you stammer, are embarrassed, and feel isolated, we offer suggestions to help. We hope people who live with a trembler will read our book. It may help you understand your child, parent, partner or spouse. Helping tremblers is hard work for the trembler and the helper. Finally, we hope doctors, physician's assistants, and nurses, will spend two or so hours reading our book. You are essential partners with us. Thank you for choosing this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout my entire lifetime people have suggested to me that I need to write a book someday! Having grown up in a low income, disadvantaged, dysfunctional and abusive family structure, I truly was, "dealt a bad hand in life". However, I have always been able to overcome my various obstacles and challenges in my life by applying hard work, discipline and dedication principles. Therefore, my autobiography should be a real inspiration for those experiencing difficult times in their own lives as well. Everyone gets dealt bad hands, throughout their lifetimes, and people should not be going around feeling sorry for themselves and making excuses for their failures/setbacks. Instead, we all need to request God's assistance if you are a religious, analyze your situation, make the necessary adjustments and move on with your life. Besides my own personal experiences, all reports of abuse need to be taken seriously and investigated. Just because a person may appear like a reputable person in public should not automatically mean that the abuse allegations are false. Unless, you are around someone all day/ every day you have no idea what kind of person they may be behind the scenes! My book also illustrates how social politics influences our social system in all areas. (Education, sports, sports, law enforcement/ legal issues, media coverage, legislation...etc.) There are special travel bonus areas reviewing most of my domestic and international traveling experiences. I also have a passion for photography and will have many photos included to present a mindset to the reading content. To conclude, my book definitely has something for everyone. Unlike many, I live a very exciting and adventurous lifestyle with a very broad range of interest. Throughout my book, I will insert popular subtopics to discuss that everyone finds to be very intriguing and/or considered taboo topics. After my book publishing cost are met, I plan on donating some of the proceeds towards my churches' community service projects that help out disadvantaged children who live with homeless families or in orphanages. Having grown up being an independent person, without a family, it is a real honor to share my life with you all!

Book excerpt: Fresh, funny, and fearless, The Middle Finger Project is a point-by-point primer on how to get unstuck, slay imposter syndrome, trust in your own worth and ability, and become a strong, capable, wonderful, weird, brilliant, ballsy, unfuckwithable YOU. "Don't worry, this isn't a book about God, nor is it a book about Ryan Gosling (second in command). But it is a book about authority and becoming your own." --Ash Ambirge After a string of dead-end jobs and a death in the family, Ash Ambirge was down to her last $26 and sleeping in a Kmart parking lot when she faced the truth: No one was coming to her rescue. It was up to her to appoint herself. That night led to what eventually became a six-figure freelance career as a sought-after marketing and copywriting consultant, all while sipping coffee from her front porch in Costa Rica. She then launched The Middle Finger Project, a blog and online course hub, which has provided tens of thousands of young "women who disobey" with the tools and mindset to give everyone else's expectations the finger and get on your own path to happiness, wealth, independence, and adventure. In her first book, Ash draws on her unconventional personal story to offer a fun, bracing, and occasionally potty-mouthed manifesto for the transformative power of radical self-reliance. Employing the signature wit and wordsmithing she's used to build an avid following, she offers paradigm-shifting advice along the lines of: • The best feeling in the world is knowing who you are and what you're capable of doing. • Life circumstances are not life sentences. If a Scranton girl who grew up in a trailer park can make it, so can you. • What you believe about yourself will either murder your chances or save your life. So why not believe something good? • You don't need a high-ranking job title to be authorized to contribute. You just need to contribute. • Be your own authority. Authority only works as long as you trust that someone smarter than you is making the rules. • The way you become a force is by being the most radically real version of yourself that you can be. • You only have 12 fucks a day to give, so use them wisely.

Book excerpt: Inspiration for The Deck of Life emerged from my clinical observations of patients in my practice of dermatology and internal medicine. I became increasingly aware of the connection between the genetic code as it relates to body build, temperament, and disease predisposition. It was further observed that these factors were influenced by the patient's "belief system" as it relates to personal characteristics, behavior, and reactions to life's situations. This book explores this unique relationship and our inherent ability to alter these features. It confirms the truth that we have a choice and an unlimited capacity to live a life stress free, with peace, happiness and longevity. In the pages of this enlightening book the reader is guided to discover his dominate and sub-dominate temperament. A better understanding of ourselves enables us to "play a winning hand" with the cards you're dealt in life. Consequently we will make decisions more wisely in the areas of health, career choice, choosing a mate, child-rearing, and the day-to-day communications and enjoyment of the people in our lives.

Book excerpt: Lori Johnson begins college with the hope of being just another freshman. Some kids like to stand out from the crowd, but Lori wants to blend in. She spent much of high school being the unwanted center of attention, accused of "faking" a painful disease. If only that were true. In constant pain that only varies by degrees, Lori decides to hide her invisible condition for as long as she can, until she knows she can trust the people around her, or until the inevitable happens and she can hide her pain no longer. She trusted people to support her before, and learned the worst way possible her trust was unfounded. Her slate is clean now, and she hopes she can be Lori first, her disability not at all. Dating wasn't in her overall "fly below the radar" plan, but Dylan is there from day one and she can't deny it feels good to be with someone who doesn't question her, or do the opposite and treat her like an invalid. When she opens up to him and tells him her whole truth, he stays true to the boy she has seen since the beginning. He supports her and treats her like a person, not a disease, which is all she could ever ask for. Life goes on, and as much as she tries her best to avoid the inevitable, the day comes when she can't hide her pain any longer. Now is the true test. Who will stay true to their word and be there for her when she faces the hardest part of her life? Who will disappear when the road gets tough? Who will surprise her completely? Either way, Lori has learned to stand on her own two feet -- even when she needs a cane to do it -- and she will continue to hold her head high.

Book excerpt: Born to immigrant parents during World War II and coming of age during the 1950s, DeSalvo finds herself rebelling against a script written by parental and societal expectations. In her revealing family memoir, DeSalvo sifts through painful memories to give voice to all that remained unspoken and unresolved in her life: a mother's psychotic depression, a father's rage and violent rigidity, a sister's early depression and eventual suicide, and emerging memories of childhood incest. At times humorous and often brutally candid, DeSalvo also delves through the more recent conflicts posed by marriage, motherhood, and the crisis that started her on the path of her life's work: becoming a writer in order to excavate the meaning of her life and community. In Vertigo, Louise DeSalvo paints a striking picture of the easy freedom of the husband and fatherless world of working-class Hoboken, New Jersey, the neighborhood of her early childhood, where mothers and children had an unaccustomed say in the running of their lives while men were off defending their country, but were jolted back into submission when World War II ended. Hoboken was not a place where girls were encouraged to develop their minds, or their independent spirits, yet it is that tenement-dotted city with its pulse and energy, wonderful Italian pastry, and sidewalk roller-skating contests, and not suburban Ridgefield, where the family moves when Louise is seven, that claims Louise's heart. Written with an honesty that is as rare as it is unsettling, Vertigo also speaks to broader truths about the impact of ethnicity, class, and gender in American life. Offering inspiration and a healthy dose of subversion, this personal story of a writer's life is also a study of the alchemy between lived experience and creativity, and the life-transforming possibilities of this process.
