Book excerpt: A keen judge of horseflesh takes a wild ride in this suspenseful new Western by USA Today bestselling author Ralph Cotton Two deputies fresh from a hard-won gunfight with the gang of notorious outlaw Dolan Coyle stroll into a saloon in the dusty little town of Broken Hat, inquiring after one Will Summers. The men are looking to swap out their exhausted horses, and they could use extra men, too. Just on the outskirts of town, Axel Coyle waits with the remnants of his brother’s crew, ready to shoot down the men who captured their leader. The deputies offer Summers a paid position in the posse escorting Dolan into federal custody. If they only knew how well acquainted the horse trader once was with the killer chained up out front, they might second-guess their proposal. Dolan had chosen a reckless trail for himself, like Summers and many others had done in their early years. Summers could not say exactly what had directed him off that trail before it managed to settle into his blood, but he’s grateful. He just doesn’t know if that resolution will hold now that his past has landed on him out of a clear blue sky… More than four million Ralph Cotton books in print!

Book Synopsis Field Gun Jack Versus The Boers by : Tony Bridgland
Download or read book Field Gun Jack Versus The Boers written by Tony Bridgland and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 1997-09-05 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: War broke out in 1899 between the British and South African settlers of Dutch descent, the Boers, or Afrikaners as they are usually called today. Despite previous clashes, the British seriously underestimated their opponents. Although dressed in battered civilian clothes and made up entirely of volunteers, Boer troops were all mounted on horses and had very up-to-date German rifles. An even more unpleasant surprise than the mounted riflemen were the Boer artillery units. They were the only Boer troops to wear uniforms, were organized on a full-time basis, and were equipped with excellent German field pieces. The British artillery soon found itself out-gunned and out-ranged. Some British officers, however, were capable of adapting to the new conditions in South Africa. Royal Naval vessels anchored off the Cape had powerful, long-range cannons. It was decided to try bringing these guns ashore and mounting them on improvised carriages for field use. Naval infantry brigades had served in some previous campaigns, and proved capable of accompanying the army as gun crews, their straw hats and naval leggings identifiable in many wartime photographs. Although they were depicted in many wartime drawings and photographs, no serious study of the naval artillery has ever been done. Tony Bridgland has spent many years researching the topic and has produced a study of the technical problems involved in this unique operation, as well as a colourful narrative of naval personnel pressed into hazardous service far from the sea.

Download or read book Guns Down written by Igor Volsky and published by The New Press. This book was released on 2019-04-09 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of Mashable's "17 books every activist should read in 2019" Join the conversation about creating a future with fewer guns and finally make a difference—this "smart, thoughtful, commonsense plan" (Donna Brazile) shows you how Ninety-six people die from guns in America every single day. Twelve thousand Americans are murdered each year. The United States has more mass shootings, gun suicides, and nonfatal gun injuries than any other industrialized country in the world. Gun-safety advocates have tried to solve these problems with incremental changes such as background checks and banning assault style military weapons. They have fallen short. In order to significantly and permanently reduce gun deaths the United States needs a bold new approach: a drastic reduction of the 390 million guns already in circulation and a new movement dedicated to a future with fewer guns. In Guns Down, Igor Volsky tells the story of how he took on the NRA just by using his Twitter account, describes how he found common ground with gun enthusiasts after spending two days shooting guns in the desert, and lays out a blueprint for how citizens can push their governments to reduce the number of guns in circulation and make firearms significantly harder to get. An aggressive licensing and registration initiative, federal and state buybacks of millions of guns, and tighter regulation of the gun industry, the gun lobby, and gun sellers will build safer communities for all. Volsky outlines a New Second Amendment Compact developed with policy experts from across the political spectrum, including bold reforms that have succeeded in reducing gun violence worldwide, and offers a road map for achieving transformative change to increase safety in our communities.
