Book Synopsis The Gulf Stream Meanders Experiment by :
Download or read book The Gulf Stream Meanders Experiment written by and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principal objective of the Gulf Stream Meanders Experiment was to kinematically and dynamically describe the nature of meanders. The upper continental slope region off Onslow Bay, North Carolina was choosen for the experiment site because several previous investigations in that area provided a baseline data set giving some ideas about time and space variability scales within and a several-month mean view of the Stream (Webster, 1961a, b; Richardson, et al., 1969). In addition, earlier observations ranging from reports in centuries-old ship logs to recent satellite infrared imagery made it apparent that Gulf Stream meandering was more intense between Charleston and Cape Hatteras than elsewhere in the South Atlantic Bight. Current, sea level, and atmospheric data from the Gulf Stream region off North Carolina for the period January - May 1979 are documented in this data report.

Book Synopsis Gulf Stream Recirculation Experiment (GUSREX) and Line Experiment SOFAR Float Data, 1980-1982 by : Maureen A. Kennelly
Download or read book Gulf Stream Recirculation Experiment (GUSREX) and Line Experiment SOFAR Float Data, 1980-1982 written by Maureen A. Kennelly and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 810 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty-nine neutrally buoyant SOFAR floats were tracked in the western North Atlantic at depths of 700 m and 2000 m. These floats were launched in an effort to measure the deep current structure of the Gulf Stream and its recirculation near 55°W. Three separate deployments were made in April and October 1980 and July 1981. The floats were tracked by means of moored autonomous listening stations. The basic data consist of float trajectories, and temperature, pressure, and velocity measurements along the trajectories. This report describes the GUSREX experiment and instrument performance. It presents plots illustrating the horizontal structure and scales of the general circulation in the Gulf Stream and its recirculation for the period October 1980 to May 1982.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is now well known that the mid-ocean flow is almost everywhere domi nated by so-called synoptic or meso-scale eddies, rotating about nearly vertical axes and extending throughout the water column. A typical mid ocean horizontal scale is 100 km and a time scale is 100 days: these meso scale eddies have swirl speeds of order 10 cm s -1 which are usually con siderably greater than the long-term average flow. Many types of eddies with somewhat different scales and characteristics have been identified. The existence of such eddies was suspected by navigators more than a century ago and confirmed by the world of C. O'D. Iselin and V. B. Stock man in the 1930's. Measurements from RIV Aries in 1959/60, using the then newly developed neutrally buoyant floats, indicated the main char acteristics of the eddies in the deep ocean of the NW Atlantic while a se ries of Soviet moored current-meter arrays culminated, in POLYGON- 1970, in the explicit mapping of an energetic anticyclonic eddy in the tropical NE Atlantic. In 1973 a large collaborative (mainly U. S. , U. K. ) program, MODE-I, produced synoptic charts for an area of the NW At lantic and confirmed the existence of an open ocean eddy field and es tablished its characteristics. Meso-scale eddies are now known to be of interest and importance to marine chemists and biologists as well as to physical oceanographers and meteorologists.

Book excerpt: This report documents hydrographic data collected during two cruises in R/V Endeavor in 1979: EN-040 (2-8 Aug) and EN-045 (16-23 Nov). The hydrographic data from two additional cruises during the first 1979 field phase of the project are documented in a separate report. The hydrographic measurements were made in support of a moored instrument program. The data from the moored instruments (primarily current meters) are reported in separate data reports for the winter and summer 1979 field phases. The objective of the hydrographic program was to vertically and horizontally map the temperature and salinity fields of the Gulf Stream, hopefully as a meander passed through the moored instrument array. The hydrographic measurements were made in conjunction with mooring deployment and recovery operations. The data reported here were collected with a Plessey 9040 STD system attached to a Niskin rosette sampler equipped with Niskin sample bottles and reversing thermometers. In addition, many temperature profiles were made with a Sippican XBT System. Surface bucket samples were taken at most stations. Beyond the presentation of contoured fields of certain derived hydrographic quantities the data are not analyzed. Interpretation of the data is not provided here.
