Book excerpt: REVIEWS "The Gruene Cowboy shines a new spotlight on the fantastic stories captured in the original Trail Drivers of Texas." -Rebecca Huffstutler Norton, Executive Director, Frontier Times Museum, Bandera, Texas "Absolutely the best source there is on the cattle trail." -Walter Prescott Webb, historian, author and president of the Texas State Historical Association "The most monumental single source on the old-time Texas trail drives north to Kansas and beyond." -Elmer Kelton, Dallas Morning News "... the essential starting point for any study of Texas trail-driving days." -Basic Texas Books IN 1915, GEORGE W. SAUNDERS, a self-described "old-time" cowboy, organized and founded the now legendary Old Time Trail Drivers' Association in San Antonio, Texas. Worried that other old-timers would soon die, taking their colorful accounts of the Wild West with them to their graves, Saunders urged his group to gather the accounts of aging Texans who as young men and women "went up the trail with cattle or horses between 1865 and 1896." The result was the 1923 masterpiece, The Trail Drivers of Texas, from which The Gruene Cowboy is excerpted. Wrote Saunders: "It is our purpose to write a history dealing strictly with trail and ranch life and the early cattle industry. This book will consist of letters written by trail drivers only, giving the minutest details of their experiences of bygone days at home and on the trail, and will contain facts and be full of thrills. Such a book has never been written; all the books published on this subject have been by some author who spent a few months on some ranch, then attempted to write a book, understanding very little about stock or the stock business, and consequently having them pulling off stunts that have never been pulled off anywhere else but in the fertile imagination of some fiction writer." This new edition, dubbed The Gruene Cowboy -- in honor of trail rider H.D. Gruene, whose family founded the now famed Central Texas tourist town and music mecca of Gruene -- contains many of the Saunders' tales but has been edited to include only the most-colorful stories and, and reworked archaic spellings and old-school styles to make it easier for modern readers. Along the trail, novices like Gruene encountered hostile Indians, cattle stampedes, gunfights, Billy the Kid, outlaws, hazardous river crossings, Quanah Parker, bars and street fights in Dodge City, herds of buffalo, extreme weather and unexpected early death in many forms. Saddle up with the men and women who blazed the cattle trails north to Dodge City, and beyond!

Book excerpt: What's a guy to do when the one who got away returns home with a big surprise in tow... I thought I had everything I could ever want. After all, half the women in my small town call me "cowboy hot," and the other half ask me regularly if I can help them put out the fire in their pants. A guy could do worse. But there's only one problem...they're not who I want. The woman of my dreams walked away from Wildcat Bluff right after she broke my heart, and I never thought I'd seen her again. But I guess I was due for a second chance, because now Lauren Sheridan is back, and she's not alone. She's got her spunky daughter with her and a dead husband she's mourning. I want to be a friend to her, but being around her again has got me all upside down. And when the old spark between us starts to really burn, we're both going to have to reconcile the mistakes of our past if we want to earn a future together... Praise for A Cowboy Firefighter for Christmas: "Vividly written firefighting scenes, a rich cast of characters, and folksy charm...will keep you warm and toasty and entertained in a big—and I mean Texas big—way." —USA Today Happy Ever After "This tale will melt even the iciest heart."—Publishers Weekly STARRED Review

From Gene Autry and Roy Rogers to contemporary artists like Michael Murphy, Red Steagall, Don Edwards and Riders in the Sky, many entertainers have performed music of the West, a genre separate from mainstream country music and yet an important part of the country music heritage. Once called "Country and Western," it is now described as "Country or Western." Though much has been written about "Country," very little has been written about "Western"--until now. Featured are a number of photos of the top stars in Western music, past and present. Also included is an extensive bibliography of works related to the Western music field.

Book excerpt: A fun, fact-filled, and thoroughly researched journey of country and western dancing from the roots of Western Swing to Hank Williams, the Urban Cowboy two-step of John Travolta, and the nationwide sensation of country line dancing. Country & Western Dance turns the spotlight on a uniquely American form of dance, one that has been scuffing the floorboards for nearly a century but is often overlooked. Fun, lively, and thoroughly researched, this revealing volume tells the full story of country and western dance music from the days of Bob Wills and Tulsa to Oklahoma's Cain's Ballroom to John Travolta and Gilley's of Houston, Texas. Each chapter provides information on the historical roots of the most popular country and western dances as well as the pioneers of the music of a particular era, all in the context of changing cultural, social, political, and economic forces in America. The book also examines the seminal impact of radio, television, and the movies in helping spread the music, the moves, and the good times on the country dance floor.

Book excerpt: Cowboys are an American legend, but despite ubiquity in history and popular culture, misperceptions abound. Technically, a cowboy worked with cattle, as a ranch hand, while his boss, the cattleman, owned the ranch. Jacqueline M. Moore casts aside romantic and one-dimensional images of cowboys by analyzing the class, gender, and labor histories of ranching in Texas during the second half of the nineteenth century. As working-class men, cowboys showed their masculinity through their skills at work as well as public displays in town. But what cowboys thought was manly behavior did not always match those ideas of the business-minded cattlemen, who largely absorbed middle-class masculine ideals of restraint. Real men, by these standards, had self-mastery over their impulses and didn’t fight, drink, gamble or consort with "unsavory" women. Moore explores how, in contrast to the mythic image, from the late 1870s on, as the Texas frontier became more settled and the open range disappeared, the real cowboys faced increasing demands from the people around them to rein in the very traits that Americans considered the most masculine. Published in Cooperation with the William P. Clements Center for Southwest Studies, Southern Methodist University.
