Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychology of Number and Its Applications to Methods of Teaching Arithmetic In presenting this book on the Psychology of dumber it is believed that a special want is supplied. There is no subject taught in the elementary schools that taxes the teacher's resources as to methods and devices to a greater extent than arithmetic. There is no subject taught that is more dangerous to the pupil in the way of deadening his mind and arresting its development, if bad methods are used. The mechanical side of training must be joined to the intellectual in such a form as to prevent the fixing of the mind in thoughtless habits. While the mere processes become mechanical, the mind should by ever-deepening insight continually increase its power to grasp details in more extensive combinations. Methods must be chosen and justified, if they can be justified at all, on psychological grounds. The concept of number will at first be grasped by the pupil imperfectly. He will see some phases of it and neglect others. Later on he will arrive at operations which demand a view of all that number implies. Each and every number is an implied ratio, but it does not express the ratio as simple number. The German language is fortunate in having terms that express the two aspects of numerical quantity. In a few instances only, the writer has allowed himself to depart from Mr. Grube's ideas. The two essays are, may I be allowed to repeat, not altogether a translation, but rather an attempt to give a condensed account of the 160 pages of Mr. Grube's work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Methods in Arithmetic In the Psychology of Arithmetic the writer has presented the applications of recent dynamic psychology and experimental education to the teaching of arithmetic, in form suitable to students who approach the topics as part of a general systematic study of education in elementary schools. The present volume deals with somewhat the same material, but from the point of view of the working teacher or student in a normal school seeking direct help in understanding the newer methods and using them under ordinary conditions of classroom instruction. No knowledge of psychology is assumed as a requirement for profitable study of this book. Discussions of the general psychological basis of the new methods and of the evidence in their favor are here omitted or much simplified. The treatment is constructive throughout. The practical consequences are treated more specifically and with abundant detailed illustration and application. In order to aid the teacher still further in putting the new principles of teaching into active operation, each chapter is accompanied by exercises, which are even more detailed and concrete in nature than the text. The choice of textbook material for illustrations of current practice in the text and for various uses in the exercises requires a word of explanation. As a matter of scientific care and of convenience to the student almost all of this material is taken from the same textbook. Scientifically this is almost necessary; for a procedure that is correct in one total teaching plan might be weak or even wrong in a different total teaching plan. Each detail of method ought to be judged with reference to its setting. All the details presented here are parts of one same teaching plan or textbook - all belong in the same setting.
