Book Synopsis Operational and Environmental Consequences of Large Industrial Cooling Water Systems by : Sanjeevi Rajagopal
Download or read book Operational and Environmental Consequences of Large Industrial Cooling Water Systems written by Sanjeevi Rajagopal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-07 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of water for industrial purposes is of foremost importance. It is used as a coolant and industrial activities dealing with power generation, steel and iron, paper and pulp and oil require very large amounts of water. The industry, therefore, resorts to large scale abstraction of water from natural water bodies. This water is often treated with chemicals to combat operational problems like biofouling and corrosion. Such withdrawal and subsequent discharge of large amounts of water have the potential to impart significant impact on the recipient water body. The organisms drawn along with the cooling water, as well as those residing at the discharge zone, are subjected to a combination of mechanical, thermal and chemical stress on a continuous basis.
Book Synopsis Hatchery Culture of Bivalves by : Michael M. Helm
Download or read book Hatchery Culture of Bivalves written by Michael M. Helm and published by Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). This book was released on 2004 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual is a synthesis of current methodologies pertinent to the intensive hatchery culture of bivalve molluscs. It encompasses both the similarities and differences in approach in rearing clams, oysters and scallops in different climatic zones. All aspects of the culture process are described, together with basic considerations in choosing a site for hatchery development and in the design of a suitable facility. It also includes the post-hatchery handling of larvae in remote setting and also of spat in both land- and sea-based nurseries. This document is intended to assist both technicians entering the field as well as entrepreneurs researching investment opportunities in bivalve culture.

Book Synopsis Estuarine and Marine Bivalve Mollusk Culture by : Winston Menzel
Download or read book Estuarine and Marine Bivalve Mollusk Culture written by Winston Menzel and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 776 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the biology, culture techniques, research and development, and future of the fishery of some of the most important bivalve mollusks cultured throughout the world. The book emphasizes those species that are truly cultured during some part of their life cycle rather than those that are harvested from natural populations. Graphs and figures summarize fisheries information and provide quick access to important production figures. Species covered include oysters, soft-shell and hard-shell clams, scallops, mussels, pearl oysters, razor clams, cockles and giant clams. Geographic areas featured include United States, Mexico, South and Central America, Europe, India, Japan, China, Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, and the coral atolls of the Pacific Ocean. Estuarine and Marine Bivalve Mollusk Culture brings together the lifetime efforts of the late Dr. Winston Menzel to characterize and improve bivalve mollusk culture worldwide. Aquaculturalists, private oyster and bivalve culturalists, and fisheries scientists will find this book to be an invaluable guide to bivalve mollusk culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bivalve Molluscs is an extremely comprehensive book coveringall major aspects of this important class of invertebrates. As wellas being an important class biologically and ecologically, many ofthe bivalves are fished and cultured commercially (e.g. mussels, oysters, scallops and clams) in a multi-billion dollar worldwideindustry. Elizabeth Gosling who has a huge wealth of research, teachingand hands on experience working with bivalves, has written alandmark book that will stand for many years as the standard workon the subject. Chapters in Bivalve Molluscs covermorphology, ecology, feeding, reproduction, settlement andrecruitment, growth, physiology, fisheries, aquaculture, genetics, diseases and parasites, and public health issues. A fullunderstanding of many of these aspects is vital for all thoseworking in bivalve fisheries and culture. An essential purchase for anyone concerned with this importantclass of animals, copies of Bivalve Molluscs should be onthe shelves of biologists, ecologists, environmental scientists, fisheries scientists and personnel within the aquaculture industry.Copies of the book should be available in all libraries andresearch establishments where these subjects are studied ortaught. Elizabeth Gosling is based at the Galway-Mayo Instituteof Technology, Galway, Ireland.

Download or read book Reproduction written by A. S. Tompa and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mollusca, Volume 7: Reproduction presents the significant features of reproduction for one of the significant major molluscan groups. This book reviews the reproductive biology of land snails, which offers the basis for making fascinating comparisons with other terrestrial groups in illustrating how evolutionary various groups solved their common problem of laying eggs. Organized into six chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the reproductive biology of prosobrach gastropods. This text then provides a comparative morphology of land snail reproductive anatomy. Other chapters consider the endocrine control of the female reproductive activity of Lymnaea stagnalis. This book discusses as well the transition in intraspecific and interspecific sexuality. The final chapter deals with cephalopod reproductive biology. This book is a valuable resource for readers who are in need of more appropriate animal systems for solving research problems pertaining to general reproduction, cytology, sex determination, biochemistry, gamete biology, neuroendocrinology, and evolutionary biology.
