Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the development and analyses the performance of life insurance industry in India, since inception of this sector, using different business indicators over the years. It discusses the evolution and changing features of the Indian insurance industry in 3 phases: phase I from 1818 to 1956, phase II from 1956 to 2000 (known as the nationalisation period) and phase III post 2000 (called the post reform period). The book also measures the relative efficiency and productivity of the life insurance industry in India for the post-reform period, by employing Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). Despite the fact that the life insurance sector recorded a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 17% in terms of total premiums and 21% in terms of new business premium collections during the post reform period, the insurers continue to grapple with the issue of profitability. Against this background, the book presents results on the factors determining profitability of the life insurance companies using measures of efficiency and competition. By helping regulatory authorities determine the future course of action in the context of entry of foreign insurers and also in establishing a level playing field, the book has important policy implications.

Book Synopsis Life Insurance in Asia by : Stephan Binder
Download or read book Life Insurance in Asia written by Stephan Binder and published by Wiley. This book was released on 2009-04-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Asian life insurance industry is truly entering an inflection point. Coming off massive growth from the past several years, the industry has suffered greatly, along with the rest of the financial industry, in the 2008 financial crisis. Most life insurers across Asia have lost tremendous value in the wake of the crisis; a few are in significant distress. It is important not to lose sight of the longer-term outlook though: fueled by macroeconomic factors such as the emergence of the middle class, high savings rates, and the growing need to save and invest for retirement, Asia's life insurance market is expected to grow at double the rate of the US and European market over the next decade. The time now is ripe for insurers to establish regional partnerships to access these markets. This authoritative book analyses the life insurance landscape in Asia, including traditional life insurance, bancassurance, etc. It comprehensively overviews the Asian insurance industry, based on extensive research provided by the authors on business opportunities and key success factors. This is an accessible yet authoritative guide to a key market opportunity.

Book Synopsis Indian Financial Sector by : Rakesh Mohan
Download or read book Indian Financial Sector written by Rakesh Mohan and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2017-01-20 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper traces the story of Indian financial sector over the period 1950–2015. In identifying the trends and turns of Indian financial sector, the paper adopts a three period classification viz., (a) the 1950s and 1960s, which exhibited some elements of instability associated with laissez faire but underdeveloped banking; (b) the 1970s and 1980s that experienced the process of financial development across the country under government auspices, accompanied by a degree of financial repression; and (c) the period since the 1990s till date, that has been characterized by gradual and calibrated financial deepening and liberalization. Focusing more the third period, the paper argues that as a consequence of successive reforms over the past 25 years, there has been significant progress in making interest and exchange rates largely market determined, though the exchange rate regime remains one of managed float, and some interest rates remain administered. Considerable competition has been introduced in the banking sector through new private sector banks, but public sector banks continue have a dominant share in the market. Contractual savings systems have been improved, but pension funds in India are still in their infancy. Similarly, despite the introduction of new private sector insurance companies coverage of insurance can expand much further, which would also provide greater depth to the financial markets. The extent of development along all the segments of the financial market has not been uniform. While the equity market is quite developed, activities in the private debt market are predominantly confined to private placement form and continue to be limited to the bluechip companies. Going forward, the future areas for development in the Indian financial sector would include further reduction of public ownership in banks and insurance companies, expansion of the contractual savings system through more rapid expansion of the insurance and pension systems, greater spread of mutual funds, and development of institutional investors. It is only then that both the equity and debt markets will display greater breadth as well as depth, along with greater domestic liquidity. At the same time, while reforming the financial sector, the Indian authorities had to constantly keep the issues of equity and efficiency in mind.

Book excerpt: In this paper, we provide an overview of the concerns surrounding the variations in the calculation of risk-weighted assets (RWAs) across banks and jurisdictions and how this might undermine the Basel III capital adequacy framework. We discuss the key drivers behind the differences in these calculations, drawing upon a sample of systemically important banks from Europe, North America, and Asia Pacific. We then discuss a range of policy options that could be explored to fix the actual and perceived problems with RWAs, and improve the use of risk-sensitive capital ratios.
