Book excerpt: Photonic thin films have been grown on a variety of substrates using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) of organic monomers, namely benzene and ocafluorocyclobutane (OFCB). Films produced by both homo-polymerization and co-polymerization have been prepared and analyzed. In order to introduce significant contributions from OFCB into co-polymerization films, the OFCB was introduced directly into the plasma zone and the benzene flow was reduced to a low, stable level using a high-accuracy metering valve. The films have been characterized by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and variable-angle spectroscopic ellipsometry (VASE), with an emphasis on XPS. Apart from determining the atomic composition of the films with XPS, it was extremely valuable in determining the chemistry of the films. Studies of the mechanisms of the homo-and co- polymerization reactions have aided in the fabrication of photonic films. The effects of monomer feed-in rates were applied to manipulate the composition and chemistry of the deposited films to achieve the required optical properties. Applications of PECVD to fabricate a notch filter and an anti-reflective coating are also provided.

Book excerpt: This book brings together detailed discussions by leading experts on the various innovative aspects of thin films growth, deposition and characterization techniques, and new thin film materials and devices. It addresses through the different viewpoints of the contributors, the major problem of thin films science - the relation between the energy of the condensing species and the resulting properties of the films. Some of the issues considered include energetic condensation, bombardment stabilization, pulsed electron beam ablation, orientation and self-organization of organic, ferroelectric and nanoparticle thin films. Several chapters focus on applications such as the recent developments in organic optoelectronics, large area electronic technology and superconducting thin film devices.

Book excerpt: This book provides a highly practical treatment of Glancing Angle Deposition (GLAD), a thin film fabrication technology optimized to produce precise nanostructures from a wide range of materials. GLAD provides an elegant method for fabricating arrays of nanoscale helices, chevrons, columns, and other porous thin film architectures using physical vapour deposition processes such as sputtering or evaporation. The book gathers existing procedures, methodologies, and experimental designs into a single, cohesive volume which will be useful both as a ready reference for those in the field and as a definitive guide for those entering it. It covers: Development and description of GLAD techniques for nanostructuring thin films Properties and characterization of nanohelices, nanoposts, and other porous films Design and engineering of optical GLAD films including fabrication and testing, and chiral films Post-deposition processing and integration to optimize film behaviour and structure Deposition systems and requirements for GLAD fabrication A patent survey, extensive relevant literature, and a survey of GLAD's wide range of material properties and diverse applications.

Thin film technology has been developed primarily for the need of the integrated circuit industry. The demand for development of smaller and smaller devices with higher speed especially in new generation of integrated circuits requires advanced materials and new processing techniques suitable for future giga scale integration (GSI) technology. In this regard, physics and technology of thin films can play an important role to acheive this goal. The production of thin films for device purposes has been developed over the past 40 years. Thin films as a two dimensional system are of great importance to many real-world problems. Their material costs are very small as compared to the corresponding bulk material and they perform the same function when it comes to surface processes. Thus, knowledge and determination of the nature, functions and new properties of thin films can be used for the development of new technologies for future applications. Thin film technology is based on three foundations: fabrication, characterization and applications. Some of the important applications of thin films are microelectronics, communication, optical electronics, catalysis, coating of all kinds, and energy generation and conservation strategies. This book emphasizes the importance of thin films and their properties for the new technologies. It presents basic principles, processes techniques and applications of thin films. As thin films physics and technology is a multidisciplinary field, the book will be useful to a wide varity of readers (especially young researcher) in physics, electronic engineering, material science and metallurgy. Contents: Deposition Processes; Characterization Techniques; Surface Processes; Nanomaterials; Optical Materials; Superconductivity; Magnetic Thin Films. Readership: Graduate students and researchers involved with the physics and technology of thin films.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Copper phthalocyanine and Buckminster fullerene have many applications in electronic devices, thus proper understanding of these materials is essential. In this work, thin films of the pure materials and composites, were vapour deposited on to room temperature substrates to mimic the conditions used in industry. The growth modes of both C60 and CuPc were found to be Volmer-Weber. For the composite films it was found that the clustering texture seen under SEM was suppressed with 5 wt.% C60, and 30 wt.% suppressed the CuPc alpha-phase crystallites. The thermal stability of the composite was found to be improved over that of the pure films up to 140°C. It was concluded that CuPc molecules migrate through the film, but the migration is inhibited by C60 due to the strong intermolecular interactions. The improved thermal stability of the composite is due to the interactions slowing the kinetics of the phase transformations.
