Book excerpt: When twelve-year-old Dusty decides to shave his head and become a “Skinhead”, his mother actually approves of his new look. But it’s 1971 in Leeds, England, and the Skinhead movement is not yet one of white supremacy as it is today. For Dusty, who recently lost his father, it’s an attempt to find his place in the world and fit in on the social housing “estate” where he lives. In doing so, he finds a new “family” in the form of the Seacroft Green Owls, a local teenage gang. Although fighting for territory and football hooliganism becomes part of his life, he also finds support, companionship, and even his first romantic encounter in the Green Owls. Dusty enjoys life in the gang along with his friends with nicknames like Duke, Cogs, Ibbo, Jonno, and Jamaica. However, things take on a darker side when a “copper” gets stabbed by a Skinhead outside a Leeds United and Manchester United football match. As the cops begin mass pickups of Skinheads, the Green Owls must find their way home, across Leeds, without taking public transportation. To do so involves evading police patrols and rival gangs and becomes a night never to be forgotten. Although fictional, The Green Owls skillfully re-creates a fascinating time and locale when football matches often lead to street violence and UK street gangs ruled. In addition to offering an exciting, fast-paced plot, this book allows readers to immerse themselves in the slang, fashion, music, and lifestyle of a movement that still influences parts of our culture today.

Book excerpt: San Francisco, 1908. After a catastrophic earthquake and fire, the devastated city is rapidly rebuilding its structures, spirit, and vitality. It is proudly called the New San Francisco. But there are still parts of San Francisco that haven't changed, including the Barbary Coast, where a crimp, padfoot, or murderous thug could be waiting around the next corner. And the city is still infected with anti-Asian racism and widespread political corruption. Into this "new" San Francisco, William Dunbar returns to avenge a brutal family murder that he believes occurred at exactly the time of the quake. As a writer of scenarios for one-reel motion pictures, he plans to use his craft to reveal the killer's guilt. However, he soon finds the odds are against him when he confronts much darker dangers than those of the Barbary Coast.

Book excerpt: This book contains the refereed proceedings of the 18th International Conference on Business Information Systems, BIS 2015, held in Poznań, Poland, in June 2015. The BIS conference series follows trends in academic and business research; thus, the theme of the BIS 2015 conference was “Making Big Data Smarter.” Big data is now a fairly mature concept, recognized and widely used by professionals in both research and industry. Together, they work on developing more adequate and efficient tools for data processing and analyzing, thus turning "big data" into "smart data." The 26 revised full papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 70 submissions. In addition, two invited papers are included in this book. They are grouped into sections on big and smart data, semantic technologies, content retrieval and filtering, business process management and mining, collaboration, enterprise architecture and business−IT alignment, specific BIS applications, and open data for BIS.

Book excerpt: "In the 25 years since [Stern] published his first book, younger Jewish writers have run with a similar shtick . . . But Stern was there first." —The Toronto Globe and Mail The Book of Mischief triumphantly showcases twenty-five years of outstanding work by one of our true masters of the short story. Steve Stern's stories take us from the unlikely old Jewish quarter of the Pinch in Memphis to a turn-of-thecentury immigrant community in New York; from the market towns of Eastern Europe to a down-at-the-heels Catskills resort. Along the way we meet a motley assortment of characters: Mendy Dreyfus, whose bungee jump goes uncannily awry; Elijah the prophet turned voyeur; and the misfit Zelik Rifkin, who discovers the tree of dreams. Perhaps it's no surprise that Kafka's cockroach also makes an appearance in these pages, animated as they are by instances of bewildering transformation. The earthbound take flight, the meek turn incendiary, the powerless find unwonted fame. Weaving his particular brand of mischief from the wondrous and the macabre, Stern transforms us all through the power of his brilliant imagination.
