Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Greek Theater, of the Fifth Century Before Christ The process of development which has just been traced is shown most clearly in the case of the theater in the precinct of Dionysus Eleuthereus on the southeastern slope of the Acropolis at Athens, which so far as is known was the only Greek theater in existence in the fifth century before Christ (fig. Whether another existed at this time also in the Lenaeum, wherever the Lenaeum was,7 is disputed. But as we know nothing concerning it, we may dismiss it from consideration. Book Synopsis Greek Theatre in the Fourth Century BC by : Eric Csapo

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Age-old scholarly dogma holds that the death of serious theatre went hand-in-hand with the 'death' of the city-state and that the fourth century BC ushered in an era of theatrical mediocrity offering shallow entertainment to a depoliticised citizenry. The traditional view of fourth-century culture is encouraged and sustained by the absence of dramatic texts in anything more than fragments. Until recently, little attention was paid to an enormous array of non-literary evidence attesting, not only the sustained vibrancy of theatrical culture, but a huge expansion of theatre throughout (and even beyond) the Greek world. Epigraphic, historiographic, iconographic and archaeological evidence indicates that the fourth century BC was an age of exponential growth in theatre. It saw: the construction of permanent stone theatres across and beyond the Mediterranean world; the addition of theatrical events to existing festivals; the creation of entirely new contexts for drama; and vast investment, both public and private, in all areas of what was rapidly becoming a major 'industry'. This is the first book to explore all the evidence for fourth century ancient theatre: its architecture, drama, dissemination, staging, reception, politics, social impact, finance and memorialisation.

This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Relative Position of Actors and Chorus in the Greek Theatre of the Fifth Century It has been assumed, and by many writers on the subject it is assumed to-day, that the great Athenian dramatists, Vitruvius, all the grammarians, lexicographers and scholiasts had before their eyes the same Greek theatre, which remained practically unchanged from the time of Aischylos to the days when Nero and Hadrian were spectators in the theatre of Dionysos. The 'vitruvian stage' has been accepted as the Greek stage for the entire period of the Greek drama, and the description of the Greek theatre by the same authority has been used as a Procrustes bed to which all plans of theatre ruins must in some way be made to conform.
