Book excerpt: The Revelation to John by Stephen Smalley is a magisterial interpretation of John's Apocalypse as a grand drama, which can only be properly understood in light of John's Gospel and letters and in the context of the Johannine community. As such, it offers the reader a significantly different approach to this enigmatic text than that offered by most contemporary commentaries. Working directly from the Greek text, Smalley offers a masterful analysis of the critical and literary dimensions of the Apocalypse for students and scholars alike. Contents include an in-depth, critical analysis of the Greek text of Revelation a wealth of scholarly interaction with other commentaries and interpretations of Revelation a canonical assessment of Revelation in light of other Johannine texts a historical understanding of Revelation in the context of the Johannine community an interpretation of Revelation as cosmic drama Here is a fresh contribution to the scholarly study of this captivating but often perplexing book of the Bible. Smalley demonstrates that the Apocalypse speaks directly to any situation in any age and offers a portrait of God's loving justice that is relevant to our own society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a dying man spends his last years writing a book, people often take notice. When the book claims to reveal the secrets of the Book of Revelation, even more interest is generated. The Apocalypse-Letter by Letter, by Steven Paul, has been described as "a masterpiece." In it, the author pens a series of letters to his brother-in-law to show how the Bible contains all the information a reader would need to decode the symbols, forms and sequence of events in the Apocalypse. Paul's literary genius is as fascinating as the subject is compelling. His unique knowledge of history, the Church, military strategy, literary forms, and wit and humor combine to take the reader on a tour of the Bible's most enigmatic book. After being diagnosed with cancer, the author sent a series of typewritten letters to his brother-in-law. Many of the letters included example passages handwritten in ancient Greek, to show how translators had often distorted the original meaning of the scripture. As Paul lay dying in a hospital bed, he gave instructions to his brother-in-law about how to assemble the information he had written into a book. Alas, he had only transmitted half of it when he passed away. Then handwritten notes were found near his manual typewriter and the brother-in-law spent the next many months entering the entire project into a computer along with the previously received letters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every significant layer of the New Testament features the distinctive concerns of apocalyptic literature, including the expectation of a messiah, hope for a resurrection, expectation of a final judgment, and a spiritual world that includes angels and demons. Yet many contemporary readers shy away from things apocalyptic, especially the book of Revelation. This introduction considers the influence of apocalyptic literature throughout the Gospels and Acts, Paul’s letters, and Revelation. It argues that early Christian authors drew upon apocalyptic topics to address an impressive array of situations and concerns, and it demonstrates—example after example—how apocalyptic discourse contributed to their ongoing work of contextual theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A reassessment of early Christian apocalypticism arguing that the texts are not so much myths about good versus evil as about divine politics and heroic submission Prevailing theories of apocalypticism assert that in a world that rebels against God, a cataclysmic battle between good and evil is needed to reassert God's dominion. Emma Wasserman, a rising scholar of early Christian history, challenges this interpretation and reframes these apocalyptic texts as myths about divine politics and heroic submission. A major scholarly contribution that ranges across Mediterranean and West Asian religious thought, this volume rethinks Paul's Christ-myth as well as his most distinctive ethical teachings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To read the book of Revelation is to see a myriad of representations pass by our gaze, offering and kaleidoscope of bizarre and incongruent images. This world strikes us at first as fearfully and mysteriously strange and fantastic. But once these symbols are properly deciphered, they combine to present crucial messages for those living in the last days. These messages were designed by God to lead all successfully through these troubled times if they will read, hear, and do his will. This commentary presents a comprehensive analysis of John's book aided by the lens of LDS doctrine and Mormon experience. God delivered his messages in the form of images housed within discrete visions, with each symbol explaining, exposing, or emphasizing various aspects of the message conveyed. The challenge is getting beyond the symbols to the represented realities. Information is drawn from all the Standard Works, the Joseph Smith Translation of the Bible, and from modern Prophets and Apostles.

Book excerpt: Throughout history, Christians have expressed their faith through story. They created texts featuring important early Christian figures—like Jesus, Peter, Paul, Mary Magdalene, and Judas—to express their relationships to God and to the world around them. Some of these texts are found in today's New Testament, but there is a wide assortment of other texts that are not included in the Bible. Secret Scriptures Revealed answers, in clear accessible terms, many frequently asked questions about the Christian Apocrypha. It describes and explains the key texts and includes a much-needed discussion of the enduring value of the Christian Apocrypha. This book recognizes that the Apocrypha are fascinating texts, which have much to offer in terms of understanding early Christian communities and the canonical Bible.
