Book excerpt: This volume examines the impact of racist government legislation and policies upon the indigenous people of Australia over the last 200 years. Pattel-Gray contends that racism in Australia is rooted in the long and corrupt relationship between government and church. The persistence of racism in every area of Australian society is documented, from government to schools to courts to churches, and the illusory humanitarian and human rights stances of both institutions are here exposed. The author argues that racism is an endemic and chronic problem that must be addressed and solved. This book defines and clarifies racist terminology and language, reviews historical and contemporary expressions of Australian racism, and assesses both the concept and the recent process of reconciliation in Australia.

Book excerpt: A BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week. Flooding has always threatened the rainy, wind-swept islands of the United Kingdom, but it is becoming more frequent and more severe. Combining travel writing and reportage with readings of history, literature and myth, Edward Platt explores the way floods have shaped the physical landscape of Britain and left their mark on its inhabitants. During the course of two years, which coincided with the record-breaking floods of the winter of 2013–14, Platt travelled around the country, visiting places that had flooded and meeting the people affected. He visited flooded villages and towns and expanses of marsh and Fen threatened by the winter storms, and travelled along the edge of the drowned plain that used to connect Britain to continental Europe. He met people struggling to stop their houses falling into the sea and others whose homes had been engulfed. He investigated disasters natural and man-made, and heard about the conflicting attitudes towards those charged with preventing them. The Great Flood dramatizes the experience of being flooded and considers what will happen as the planet warms and the waters rise, illuminating the reality behind the statistics and headlines that we all too often ignore.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Post-Christendom Studies publishes research on the nature of Christian identity and mission in the contexts of post-Christendom. Post-Christendom refers to places, both now and in the past, where Christianity was once a significant cultural presence, though not necessarily the dominant religion. Sometimes “Christendom” refers to the official link between church and state. The term “post-Christendom” is often associated with the rise of secularization, religious pluralism, and multiculturalism in western countries over the past sixty years. Our use of the term is broader than that however. Egypt for example can be considered a post-Christendom context. It was once a leading center of Christianity. “Christendom” moreover does not necessarily mean official public and dominant religion. For example, under Saddam Hussein, Christianity was probably a minority religion, but, for the most part, Christians were left alone. After America deposed Saddam, Christians began to flee because they became a persecuted minority. In that sense, post-Saddam Iraq is an experience of post-Christendom—it is a shift from a cultural context in which Christians have more or less freedom to exercise their faith to one where they are persecuted and/or marginalized for doing so.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication, "The Great White Throne Judgment," is a book which inspires and encourages Christians to declare the awfulness of the individuals who die without Christ, to go to a Christless grave, to a Christless time everlasting (a Christless eternity). What a dreadful, irredeemable mistake to enable the valuable years to sneak past, with no readiness made for the world to come. At death there will be no holy messengers (angels) to welcome the person who dies without Jesus Christ. As on account of the rich man who opened his eyes in hades, so it will be. The certainty of death! The irreversibility of death! Once in hades the entryways close shut, never to be opened outward until the "Great White Throne Judgment." Then the prisoners to be discharged are brought to stand before an offended God on that great day to hear the fateful verdict, "Depart from me..." Be that as it may, this need not be. The thoughtful welcome is to all who will to "drink of the waters of life openly." Those who acknowledge, believe in faith on Jesus Christ, may have their names written now in the Lamb's book of life. For such a man there is no judgment, for Christ has stood in the humble sinner's place. The Apostle Paul recounts His work on the cross: "Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it" (Col. 2:14, 15). Time holds before men two options. It is "life" or "death," "heaven" or "hell," "salvation" or "judgment." God grant that we choose Eternal life. Reverend Dr. John Thomas Wylie
