Book excerpt: Published in 1852, 'The Great Question for the People Essays on the Elective Franchise or Who Has the Right to Vote' argues in favor of expanding voting rights to all white men, regardless of property ownership. Drawing on legal arguments and historical examples, John Hancock champions the belief that voting is a fundamental right of citizenship. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Question for the People: Essays on the Elective Franchise; Or, Who Has the Right to Vote? The subject of these few pages is of itself of the highest importance. To no people on earth can it be destitute of interest; and to ourselves at this time it may well take precedence of all others. The stiff phrase "elective franchise" means the right of choice, and a moment's reflection will show us that those who choose the rulers are the virtual governors; and thus the question, "Who shall vote?" resolves itself into the question, "Who shall rule?" If ever a grave theme came before an earnest people, this is one. We shall need all the discoveries of former time, and all the wisdom of our own, to do it justice; and even with all these, we may deferentially exclaim, "Who is sufficient for this thing!" But while thus impressed with our great responsibility, let us not forget that cowardice is no element of safety. We have not officiously gone out of the beaten track of duty to meddle with this matter. It lies full before us, and will allow of no evasion. The stern necessity of present consideration lies upon us, - the grand panel of the nation, - the present voters of our great republic; and the sacrificed dead and the helpless living unite to remind us in loving earnestness, "for this end were ye born!" The author, in his search for precedents, has gleaned from the whole field of the past. Greece and Rome, and all the intervening governments send their tributes of experience. Our European fathers are brought to the witness-stand, and after them appear our own wise men from Patrick Henry down to Edward Everett. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a distinguished historian, a detailed and compelling examination of how the early Republic struggled with the idea that “all men are created equal” How did Americans in the generations following the Declaration of Independence translate its lofty ideals into practice? In this broadly synthetic work, distinguished historian Richard Brown shows that despite its founding statement that “all men are created equal,” the early Republic struggled with every form of social inequality. While people paid homage to the ideal of equal rights, this ideal came up against entrenched social and political practices and beliefs. Brown illustrates how the ideal was tested in struggles over race and ethnicity, religious freedom, gender and social class, voting rights and citizenship. He shows how high principles fared in criminal trials and divorce cases when minorities, women, and people from different social classes faced judgment. This book offers a much-needed exploration of the ways revolutionary political ideas penetrated popular thinking and everyday practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A historian’s “revealing and much-needed retelling of the writing of the Declaration of Independence and the events that led up to it” (William D. Watkins, author of The New Absolutes). Tying American history to our current political climate, The Founders’ Revolution is designed to help readers understand the principles embedded in the Declaration of Independence. The book unpacks the intent of the Founding Fathers in drafting the document, and the historical circumstances surrounding its development. Every charge and every paragraph of the Declaration of Independence is discussed with supporting evidence coming from the original words of the Founding Fathers and other original source documents. The Founders’ Revolution also makes astute comparisons between actions taken by America’s current federal government and those taken by the King of England at the time of the Declaration, showing how our founding document and its principles are still applicable today. In this revealing history, readers will rediscover the forgotten treasures of the Declaration of Independence, recognizing the dedication of the Founding Fathers to the principles written down.
