Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Poets of Italy Together With a Brief Connecting Sketch, of Italian Literature The body of this book formed the second pat of a volume on the Latin and Italian poets, prepared, in collaboration with Professor F. J. Miller, of Chicago University, for the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle (1901-1902). In rearranging this material for a wider public, two new chapters have been added, while extensive changes have been made in the rest of the book. Being in Italy when the chapters on Dante were written, I found myself unable to procure a copy of Rossetti's or Norton's translation of the "New Life," and was thus obliged to make my own version of the passages quoted from that work. I desire to thank the following publishers for their courtesy in allowing me to use the various translations quoted in this book: Houghton, Mifflin & Co. (Longfellow's translation of the "Divine Comedy"), D. Appleton & Co., Dodd, Mead & Co., John Lane, F. A. Stokes Co., Harper & Brothers. Book excerpt: "Italian Literature before 1900 in English Translation provides the most complete record possible of texts from the early periods that have been translated into English, and published between 1929 and 2008. It lists works from all genres and subjects, and includes translations wherever they have appeared across the globe. In this annotated bibliography, Robin Healey covers over 5,200 distinct editions of pre-1900 Italian writings. Most entries are accompanied by useful notes providing information on authors, works, translators, and how the translations were received. Among the works by over 1,500 authors represented in this volume are hundreds of editions by Italy's most translated authors - Dante Alighieri, [Niccoláo] Machiavelli, and [Giovanni] Boccaccio - and other hundreds which represent the author's only English translation. A significant number of entries describe works originally published in Latin. Together with Healey's Twentieth-Century Italian Literature in English Translation, this volume makes comprehensive information on translations accessible for schools, libraries, and those interested in comparative literature."--Pub. desc.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Poets of Italy, in Prose and Verse: Including a Condensation in Rhyme of Dante's Divine Comedy, and a Critical Introductory Review of Italian Poets and Poetry From Mediaeval to Modern Times Some time ago the perhaps too ambitious idea sug gested itself to me to write The Lives of the Poets, a cosmopolitan work embracing many names, memoirs and countries. I felt that with our modern and rapid means of communication and transportation, with the vast amount of world travel and interchange of lan guage and ideas between the scholars and literary men and women of the different nations of the Earth occur ring to-day (or at least until temporarily arrested by the present great international cataclysm), the poet and the poetical biographer should be able to say with Wesley of old, The World is my parish. I felt, too, that the only work that claims to-day that all-embracing title, that of the famous Samuel Johnson, in spite of its wit, its scholarship, its many classical allusions and. Book excerpt: Dante Alighieri is celebrated as the Poet of the Divine, author of the Divine Comedy, one of the most significant works of literature the world has ever known. But before he was a writer of the divine in Latin, Dante was a young man besotted by love who composed poems in Italian. The New Life (La Vita Nuova) By Dante; Tr. Gabriel Rossetti, With an Introduction By Charles Eliot Norton, One Hundred Sonnets is the work of young Dante, composed when he was 18 years old and in love with a woman named Beatrice. La Vita Nuova contains 31 lyric poems, the majority of which are sonnets, although there are also three long songs. The poems were written first, then years later Dante added prose introductions to put the poems in context. Dante's introductory remarks are a framing device which explain certain Biblical references and clarify the significance of his burning passion for Beatrice. Dante analogizes Beatrice with Christ. As the narrative unfolds, the poems themselves resemble religious chants, encouraging the reader to enter an almost trancelike state. Readers who have been in love will recognize Dante's feelings of beauty and terror. Dante experienced their lost love as a life-changing salvation, and Beatrice later appears once more in the Divine Comedy. This edition of La Vita Nuova was translated into English by Gabriel Rossetti, with an Introduction By Charles Eliot Norton. Norton was a prominent Dantist and he included other love-inspired works from Italy in the volume. These include Petrarch's tale of unrequited love in One Hundred Sonnets, Boccaccio's prose romance La Fiammetta and collected poems from the painter Michelangelo. Poetry lovers, students of Italy and people in thrall to obsessive love will enjoy the Italian literature presented in La Vita Nuova.
